Cecil Hurt writes for the Tuscaloosa News

It's early in the college football season, but this weekend’s game in Fayetteville could be the tipping point for both Alabama and Arkansas this season -- Alabama in terms of this year, and Arkansas, perhaps, in the even bigger picture involving its head coach, Houston Nutt.

Usually, this column sticks to commentary about Alabama and doesn’t stray into speculation about the Crimson Tide’s opponent. There’s a good reason for that. After covering Alabama for years, I’ve come to realize that the internal situation of a major college athletic department can involve complex personalities and fierce politics. It’s sometimes hard to tell what’s true and what isn’t, what’s accurate and what’s not, even when you have a pretty good working knowledge of the individuals involved. So when you don’t know all the inner workings at a school (and I do assume that other SEC schools are just as Byzantine, in their way, as Alabama), it’s even harder.

I don’t pretend to be an expert on Arkansas. What I know is what I read from writers in that state, guys like Wally Hall, Bob Holt, Nate Allen, Clay Henry and some others. But if you read the Arkansas media, and apply a little common sense, it’s tempting to say that this game might turn out to be the make-or-break game for Nutt.

It would be impossible to try and cram all the details of Nutt’s career, or even a tumultuous offseason, into a couple of paragraphs, but here’s an attempt to do so anyway.

This is Nutt’s ninth season at Arkansas. He has had some good teams and some good wins, but he’s only had one year -- his first, in 1998 -- in which the Razorbacks haven’t lost at least four games. They’ve made it to Atlanta once, in 2002, when Alabama, the division’s best team, wasn’t eligible to go.

Arkansas has had to overcome some NCAA sanctions, which probably won’t get it much sympathy in Alabama. He’s had some big wins and challenged some big boys out of conference. The Razorbacks knocked off Texas in 2003. But the past two seasons have seen losing records, two embarrassing beat-downs at the hands of mighty Southern Cal and a good bit of disaffection in the Ozarks.

In the offseason, Frank Broles, the Arkansas athletic director, “suggested" a change in offensive coordinators, which, in terms of a coaching career, is sort of like an EMT “suggesting" that they use the defibrilator. It’s an attempt to shock some life into the program. In Arkansas’ case, though, the coordinator who was hired was a Fayetteville-area high school legend, Gus Malzahn, who coached prime prospect Mitch Mustain. Imagine, for a moment, if Mal Moore told Mike Shula that he was being very carefully evaluated and that he had to turn the offense over to Rush Propst, and you’ll get some idea of the situation. As Wally Hall described it in The Arkansas Democrat, Nutt is fighting for his coaching life -- and doesn’t even get to call the plays.

But, perhaps thanks to a fortuitous gust of wind in Nashville, the arrangement is working so far. USC smashed Arkansas, but freshman phenom Mustain (wisely) didn’t become the starter until the next week. The Razorbacks have subsequently handled Utah State and edged Vanderbilt when a Commodore field goal attempt to win the game fell short in the breeze. Thus, two wins -- but not the sort to set a fan base ablaze with joy.

The Alabama game might be another matter entirely.

It’s always risky to look at a team’s schedule and automatically check off “wins" and “losses." (Remember Mike DuBose’s 1999 Alabama team losing to Louisiana Tech one week and beating Florida in Gainesville two weeks later?)

A win over Alabama, though, and Arkansas would appear to have a pretty solid shot at eight or nine victories, a nice bowl -- and a new lease on life for Nutt. A loss to Alabama, and it’s a grumbling off week, followed by a trip to Auburn -- and, perhaps, some decisions being made. Again, I do not pretend to know the inner workings at Arkansas, but that seems like a logical guess.

For the past decade or so, the Arkansas game has been a measuring stick for Alabama -- the Tide teams that have beaten the Hogs have turned out pretty well, and the ones that have lost, generally speaking, haven’t. It will once again be a measuring stick for the Tide on Saturday -- but for Arkansas, it might be even more.

Well, nothing would make me happier if this were true, but a lot of your reporters theories are flawed and its a little more complicated than that. I'm pretty sure the Vandy win allowed him to keep his job for the rest of the season unless we lose to Southwest Missouri State or Lousiana Monroe. If we lose to either of those two then HDN and his u-haul will be packed and on their way to Starkville or NC-State before he can even due a post game interview.

NC State won't be an option for Nutt's lost, 'cause the Steeler's coach already has a retirement home in Raleigh NC.

Well, I can honestly say that there is a much greater chance of Nutt going to NC State then Bill Cowher. Infact, the whole Bill Cowher deal is just ignorant (not that I'm saying you are, but the NC State fans for starting and continuing the rumor are.) I don't see a decent NFL coach coming off of winning the superbowl saying "Hey, I've got an idea, I think I'm going to give up coaching the super bowl champs for a while and start coaching a train wreck of a college program that just lost to Akron, and Southern Miss." "While I'm at it, I'll just go ahead and give up however many millions of dollars a year I get not only salary, but indorsements to make about 5% of what I make now because NC State needs a lot of help and I feel responsible since I live there." This is pretty much what the Wolfpack is saying right now.

I put as much stock in this as the Jimmy Johnson rumor that circulates among Hog fans about once a year. It would be nice, but no way in hell its going to happen.

I never thought I'd see the day where a win over Vandy would secure and Ark. coaches job.

Well let me ellaborate on that sentence. It's not that we view what happened last weekend as a quality win of such magnitude that it would allow Nutt to retain his job for the rest of this season, its that if we would have lost to the Commodores last Saturday there was a very good chance that it would have been Nutt's last game as head coach of the hogs.

By winning last weekend he probably bought himself the rest of the season unless we lose to Southwest Missouri State, LA Monroe, or (and no offense intended) one or both of the Mississppi Schools (but if one of these games are lost he might as well finish the season since there will be only one or two games left). A loss to Alabama this weekend would be very disappointing and probably would result in one of the last nails in the coffin, but he wouldn't get fired mid-season for losing to Alabama. The majority of Arkansas fans won't conseed an Auburn loss the next week, but most of us, including myself, would be very surprised if we were able to pull the upset. This sentiment somewhat holds true, but to a lesser extent against LSU, and to a lesser extent still against Tennessee.

Let me add that I could in no way hope for an Arkansas loss even if it meant that we would be rid of Nutt, but if that field goal would have had 20" more on it, then Alabama would probably be facing Alex Wood as interm coach this weekend.

Does Shula's future depend on Arkansas?

In all honesty, if Shula loses this game, then the wheels fall off for the rest of the season and I think the 'Bama Nation will grow very tired of Shula, in addition to his off the field player problems and not stepping up to punish properly.

I don't think Shula is on the hot seat and if he is then it is more luke warm. I've heard some of the bama fans are grumbling about the offense, but I don't think it is anything serious. I actually kind of agree with how he is choosing to discipline his team with sitting out his players only when they play cupcakes. I don't believe he is just doing this so that the "team" doesn't have to suffer, however. I also think he is doing it for his job security and really who could blame him for that. As far as it showing a negative image, if you think about it most of our team's stars usually rack up the majority of their stats during cupcake games anyway so it isn't just a slap on the wrist. For the players who are being disciplined that are possible early draft picks it will eventually hurt them in the pocket book as well.

Side note though, as you all know I'm very interested in Arkansas finding a new coach and I am very much hoping that we will be able to hire Butch Davis. However, I heard something pretty interesting this morning evolving Mark Richt. If Larry Coker doesn't turn Miami around then it is pretty evident that this is his last season. From what I have heard this week Canes fans are screaming for Butch Davis too, but I also heard something that maybe the Georgia fans can elaborate on. Miami fans are saying that in Richt's new contract there was a clause for a Miami by out if the HC position became available there. If that is true and Larry Coker gets fired this season then is there a chance that Richt ends up at Miami? And if he didn't want to go why would something like that be put into his contract? Or is it just BS? Although wasn't he an assistant there?

Mark Richt was the offensive coordinator at Florida State prior to his head coaching job at UGA.

And Richt played at Miami, if I recall. Graduated in '82.

So besides Richt and Tuberville, who else in the SEC has a UMiami connection?

the team has not had excessive discipline issues first of all

and secondly the Administration has backed Shula on his confidentiality policy in regards to who, how and when he disciplines someone

I think the Bama game was circled on everyone's calender...including a lot of people in Tuscaloosa. If I'm not mistaken, Arkansas has never won the game following a loss to Alabama. With Arkansas' schedule the rest of the way I knew this game was the lynch-pin for the season....regardless of how we won three out of four games...we are 3-1 and now get most of our tough games at home...two Mississippi schools...LA-Monroe...SW Missouri St, etc. Following this victory a bowl game is all but assured. My prediction of 8 wins is still possible and no less than that will subdue Arkansas fans. Bama is going to have a tough rest of the season (when you look at their schedule) following the loss to Arkansas and has basically assured themselves of a 4th place finish in the west.
