LSU's Pennington Biomedical Research Center has won a $7.5 million grant from the National Center for Research Resources through that organization's Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence program. The money will be used to train future scientists in obesity and diabetes research. COBRE grants are meant to increase competitiveness among biomedical investigators in states like Louisiana that historically have missed out on significant research funding from the National Institutes of Health, which is the NCRR's parent agency. Pennington Professor Thomas Gettys, principal investigator on the grant, says the $7.5 million will enhance obesity and diabetes research in Louisiana by "recruiting, mentoring and retaining promising young scientists." Part of the mentoring process will be teaching young post-docs how to get grants on their own and thus become independent researchers in the field.
