Smelley may redshirt with injury

Heel injury plaguing backup QB; tight end Cook returning to wide receiver

The USC quarterback who was the biggest surprise of the preseason might be headed for a redshirt.

Gamecocks freshman Chris Smelley, who played two series in each of the first two games, has been limited with a minor heel injury that could prompt the USC coaching staff to apply for a medical hardship.

“I guess Smelley didn’t do much. He’s got a little bit of a bad heel,” USC coach Steve Spurrier said after Monday’s practice. “I don’t know what we’re going to do with him. He hasn’t played since the second game. So I don’t know, he may be held out or not.”

According to the NCAA manual, a player can apply for a medical redshirt if he sustains an incapacitating injury or illness within the first six games of the season, as long he has not played in more than two games.

Smelley, who vaulted past Cade Thompson into the backup spot with his strong preseason showing, has completed 9-of-15 passes for 112 yards this season.

The Tuscaloosa, Ala., native did not play against Wofford.

Instead, Syvelle Newton made his first start at quarterback in two seasons in place of Blake Mitchell, who was suspended following an alleged bar fight in Five Points. On a key third down in the second half, Thompson came in for Newton for one play and threw an incompletion.

Spurrier reiterated that Newton would start again this week against Florida Atlantic. He did not name a backup.

Changes at tight end. Jared Cook, who moved to tight end in the spring, is returning to receiver.

“He’s not a tight end,” Spurrier said. “He’s not a blocker so he was not of any help trying to block last game.”

Andy Boyd, who missed the first three games with a cracked bone in his shoulder, practiced Monday and could return against the Owls. If not, Spurrier will go with Robert Pavlovic, who started the first two games before his one-week demotion to the scout team.

Whiteside and Erving reinstated. Receiver Noah Whiteside and safety Ty Erving are eligible after serving three-game suspensions for an undisclosed violation of university policy.

Whiteside, a senior from Greenville, has 32 career receptions for 518 yards and three touchdowns. Erving is a redshirt junior from Batesburg who has eight career tackles. Neither player is listed on this week’s two-deep chart.

Guard James Thompson, who was slated to start, is expected to return for next week’s Auburn game following a four-game suspension for violating team rules.

Extra points. USC’s depth chart includes a couple of defensive changes. Joel Reaves has moved ahead of Stanley Doughty at nose tackle, while Darian Stewart stepped in for the injured Emanuel Cook (left knee sprain) at one of the safety spots. ... Tailback Cory Boyd, who sprained his right ankle against Wofford, was wearing a protective boot on his foot Monday and is questionable for Saturday. Linebacker Cody Wells (ankle) left practice early. Fullback Lanard Stafford (ankle) was out and cornerback Captain Munnerlyn (forearm) was limited. Receiver Mike West (hamstring) will miss his second game in a row.

This really sucks. I was hoping that none of our freshmen's getting injured and have to sit out the rest of the year. Smelley is our QB for next year so I was hoping he can get some playing time but guess not. Didnt Kevin Young the OL go down with a injury as well?? Really sucks that freshmen's that had the potential to make impact are going to be redshirted.

If the injury is going effect his play it is better to go ahead and redshirt the kid while you still can and not lose a year of his eligibility.

Can you really get a medical redshirt if you only have a bruised heel? I thought it had to be a more serious injury.

There is a name for the injury, however I cannot remember the name. Spurrier said the trainers told him he should be able to get a medical redshirt having only played 2 games.

JerryBeeds, it is great see your name by posts again. Very glad to see you are posting again. The injury only has to be bad enough to keep him out of play if he meets the other criteria mentioned above. It could be a hangnail but if it keeps him out of play then he is entitled to redshirt the season.

I've had a bruised heel before, and it takes a long time to heel (because you can't really stay off of it). That said, he could play if he wanted, this is just a way to get him a redshirt, everyone does this. I wouldn't be suprised if Ben Tate has a bad hammy come next week for auburn.

Yeah Bama is exploring this option for Freshman Terry Grant too. His sholder has been bothering him and Shula says if the doctors say it will need surgery the coaches will recomend he get it taken care of now, get his redshirt so he still has four years left and would be ready for spring ball.

I am not a doctor but I play a lot of tennis and I have had several friends that have had what is called "Plantar Fasciitis". This is an inflamtion of the tendion that connects the heel bone to the arch of the foot. It is quit painful and hard to get rid of. I had a friend that would put his foot on a sheet of ice every day while sitting or watching tv and of course you have to limit the time you spend on your feet.

I had hairline fractures in my heels and had to sit out two full soccer seasons, which is the equivalent of like 7 months.

I think the reality of the situation is Smelley is now the 3rd string QB. With Newton and Mitchell now splitting snaps Smelley or any other QB will be lucky to see the field. Why waste a whole year on a QB that has so much potential? The injury may be for real, but I bet a red-shirt has much more to do with the current QB situation.

From what Spurrier said he is now fourth string, with Cade taking third.

Smart move by all the coaching staffs IMHO. If the frosh aren't up to snuff by now why waste'm, right?

Terry Grant is having surgery on his shoulder by the way.

Plantar Faciitis (spelling?) is horrible, I have it in my right heel and basically the only way to correct from what my foot Doc told me was ortho supports for life or a surgery where they cut a very think tendon and repair it. I think it has a long recovery period as well. My only other option was pain!

These young men give 110% for us 24/7 but their is no need for any of them to risk permament injury.

This is good for the cocks, Keep Smelley around I would hate for him to be a Junior before he starts, waiting for mitchell to hurry up and graduate.
