Bryant Hahnfeldt's 48-yard field goal attempt with 55 seconds remaining was a couple of yards short, leaving Vanderbilt a couple of points short as visiting Arkansas won a 21-19 Southeastern Conference decision Saturday.
It was a tough loss for a Commodore team that dropped a 13-10 league decision last weekend at Alabama. For the second straight week, Vanderbilt (0-3, 0-2 SEC) had a lead before finally falling, this time before 32,202 at Vanderbilt Stadium.
"We had all kind of opportunities, just like last week," Coach Bobby Johnson said. "We've got to take advantage of them, put the ball in the end zone and win a game."
Trailing by two after quarterback Chris Nickson's second rushing touchdown of the day with 13:18 left in the game, Vanderbilt's final drive started at its own 28 with 4:44 remaining.
The Commodores converted one fourth-down situation before stalling at the Arkansas 31 on fourth-and-2.
Hahnfeldt hit a career-long 48-yarder as a freshman against LSU last season, but was unable to convert from that distance Saturday.
Defensively, the Commodores stayed in the game by holding an Arkansas offense that had rushed for 279 yards last week against Utah State to just 170, though freshman quarterback Mitch Mustain did throw for all three Arkansas touchdowns.
"We refocused ourselves in practice," Vanderbilt linebacker Marcus Buggs said. "We played disciplined football — played our gaps, played all our cutbacks and held them to few yards."
