This is shaping up to be a long season.
*We beat MSU 15-0 with a trick play and 3 field goals. A team that just lost to Tulane.
*We get shut out by Georgia.
*We only beat Wofford by 7 points.
I've watched two games on TV been to another and every time not matter if we win or lose I come away feeling like someone lost in a desert excited about seeing a big huge cool glass of water only to find out it's not there.

Here is the rest of the season:

FAU: W They are terrible.

AU: L They are going to kills. I don't think this will be close.

UK: W They have a somewhat good offense. I felt a lot better about this 3 weeks ago.

Vandy: W At the begining of the season I thought there is no doubt we roll them. But considering they hung with Michigan (A team that killed ND) and almost beat Arky this my go either way. But we have more talent and a better coach.

UT: L If our offense doesn't turn around if could be another 18-0 game.

Arky: W They almost lost to Vandy. It will be close though.

FL: L Coach returning to the Swamp. I'd love to see a win, but I don't.

MTSU: W It better be.

Clem: L They just beat FSU. I think right now they are just better.

So 7-5. About what I expected coming into the year. Am I crazy to feel left in the cold so far this year? Even though I though we would be 2-1 thus far into the season.

No. I don't think your crazy. This season certainly has been. I agree with most of your picks. I do however still think we topple either Tenn. or UF. I still think we will get better as time goes by as well. Let's not give up hope yet. However to be a little concerned is normal I think.

I'm there with ya man.....I think we should consider ourselves very fortunate to win 7 this season. I guess we just have to be patient. All of these freshmen and sophmores will be sophmores and juniors next season...you know how that goes. And I agree with your game predictions. As much as it hurts me to say, clemson is a much better team than us. I'm not looking forward to that one either.

Kentucky is not going to be an easy win either. I don't see us winning this game unless we find some offensive lineman that can block.

So 7-5. About what I expected coming into the year. Am I crazy to feel left in the cold so far this year? Even though I though we would be 2-1 thus far into the season.

I walked into my house (in Illinois) early in the 3rd qtr of the Wofford game. I fired up the computer to get the radio feed over the internet. As I looked at the stats, even though we were well ahead, I got a very uneasy feeling. My first post in the game thread was asking if anyone else felt the same. No one really responded, but over the next 25 minutes of football, we nearly lost to a TINY, TINY school.

I did not expect this year to be our year. I have been pointing toward 2007 since the end of last season, but I was hopeful (and perhaps caught up in the optimism of others) that we could potentially have a very good year. I no longer believe that. We have some very serious fundamental problems with this team. The only thing that I would disagree with you on is that I think you are being too optimistic about the rest of the season. When I say that you have to understand that I am an eternal optimist. But reality is hitting me hard with this team. This is how I see it shaking out....

Here is the rest of the season:

FAU: W (W) They are terrible. (AGREED)

AU: L (L) They are going to kill us. I don't think this will be close. (We will get blown out in this game....but I will still watch....did I mention I am an eternal optimist?)

UK: W (L) They have a somewhat good offense. I felt a lot better about this 3 weeks ago. (Kentucky is always a challenge in Lexington, and I think they will take us this year...didn't think that 3 weeks ago)

Vandy: W (L) At the begining of the season I thought there is no doubt we roll them. But considering they hung with Michigan (A team that killled ND) and almost beat Arky this my go either way. But we have more talent and a better coach. (Vandy is tough and Bobby Johnson has them on the rise...they could easily be 2-1...another road game that contributes to a loss since our teams are probably fairly equal.)

UT: L (L) If our offense doesn't turn around if could be another 18-0 game. (AGREED)

Arky: W (W) They almost lost to Vandy. It will be close though. (AGREED)

FL: L (L) Coach returning to the Swamp. I'd love to see a win, but I don't. (AGREED THAT THIS IS A LOSS...BUT I THINK IT MAY GET UGLY)

MTSU: W (W) It better be. (AGREED...TOTALLY)

Clem: L (L) They just beat FSU. I think right now they are just better. (AGREED, BUT NOT ONLY ARE THEY BETTER RIGHT NOW...THEY'RE MUCH BETTER)

Unfortunately, I see the season winding up at 5-7, but we could possibly squeeze out one more and finish 6-6. At .500 we will get a bowl bid simply because of fan support, but we will have to get lucky in a game to get there IMO. Not happy about it...but that's the way I see it now.

Come on guys, don't give up, we've got a young team and Wofford
was really fired up for us. It was Newton's first game under Spurrier,
I thought he did okay. We've got to get better, but we've started
a lot of seasons worse off than 2-1! Stay behind the team and don't
lose hope before the season even gets started good. That's not what
good Cock fans do, and I know you guys are good fans!

I guess it's kind of a good sign if we're all upset over a 2-1 start...and we'll most likely be 3-1 after this week. But what worries me, and I think it bothers others, is the games against the big schools. We have to let these youngans grow up some. We'll be okay in due time, it just may not be this year.

It's a good sign in a way, but folks have let their expectations
get way too high. Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither will a
team like all of us want. I just want you guys to take a deep
breath and ride this out. We can't get discouraged and neither
can this young team.

Some of you totally amaze me! I mean geez, we won the damn game. Almost everyone here knew that we really wouldn't have a REAL chance at the SEC Crown until at the least, 2007 or 08.

Spurrier is still working with a lot of Holtz's players and these players were recruited for a "RUN BASED OFFENSE" and not Spurrier's pass offense. I think some people are letting last year get to their heads. We ALL knew the OL was suspect this year and it's going to be a little while until this team and Spurrier's players are in place. PERIOD!

Wake up and smell the dog&*^% on the bottom of your shoe. I'll take an ugly win anyday over a loss.

If these stats were against ANY other team, you all would be praising Newton from head to toe. He's actually the best QB statistics wise on the roster per SECSports.com. Newton has my support and he also deserves his kudos for a very good performance on Sat.

Newton did a great job for his first start as a QB in over a year. It was Newton that kept us out of trouble with his rushing ability. I think a lot of people are scared that what happened with Holtz may happen again. Trust me, it's not. Spurrier already stated that he was going to work with Newton on his mechanics this week and sharpen him up.

As for playing Smelley, you all are out of your mind. All it takes is one nasty hit and he's done for. A wet paper bag is stronger than our OL at the time. I agree with Spurrier. Now is not the time for Smelley with the way our OL is playing.

From day 1, Spurrier said his goal was to win more than he lost this year. He also said we don't have the talent needed to take on the big boys this year and that will cure itself in due time.

Now fast forward to 2007 or better yet, 2008. With us playing all of these freshmen now, can you imagine what they'll be like then as JR's and SR's?

This team is gonna be sick and kicking some major a$$ soon enuff. For all you armchair coaches out there, Spurrier has forgotten more about this game then any of you have ever known. Let him do his job for Christ's sake. :brick:

Giving up is not the issue. It's not hard to read the tea leaves. We're not there yet, but we will be at the latest in 2008.

Good points by Shocktop and Neo...I mean, look at how we started out last season. We came back from two stompings to string together the longest SEC win streak in school history. Im not saying that will happen again but I do see us ending the regular season at 7-5 with a chance to surpass last years win total in the bowl game. If that happens I would consider this season a success...

I am not writing this season off just yet. Anything can happen on a Saturday (or Thursday) night. Wofford gave us a scare. Maybe we will scare someone else. Maybe not.

At least I know that I do not have to go into a game with high expectations. I can go and just watch things unfold in front of me. There is no stress when you give your guys a year to mature, and I will not be in despair if any of the big guys beat us. I hope we win against FATL, KY, and VANDY at least.

I will miss this week but will be there for AU. Hopefully, we can surprise them.

I agree, 2007 and 2008, things will be different.

The rest of the South Carolina season will be a benchmark for Spurs. He must make some turnarounds. The tossups are key:

FAU: W No problem here.

AU: L They'll simply toy with you. Their defense is lights out.

UK: Tossup Their offense is good. Your D will have to be better than okay.

Vandy: Tossup Very well coached. Some good talent. An uphill battle.

UT: L An easy win for Phat Phil and OC Cutcliffe. Ainge will shine.

Arky: Tossup You'll have your hands full with McFadden & Mustain.

FL: L I wish it were not so, but they are MUCH too strong for you.

MTSU: W Shouldn't be a problem at all.

Clem: L They'll probably run over you; but it's one of those grudge things, so you never know.

I agree with all of those points except the Ainge one.We always have a very good pass defense, but we cant stop anyones running game to save our life.

Well I need to say one thing. Somebody needs to tell our fans to get fired up for this weekends game. They were never in the game this past weekend. I know it was Wofford and everything, but with all the new players we have on the field, we need to give them as much support as possible. We need to scream and yell like it is the bigggest game of the year for them. Give them so love for heavens sake. I bet they felt like the were on the road.

Everybody was so down after the Wofford game. But you have to understand something about Wofford. The Wofford game was an anomaly, as the Air Force game was for Tennessee.

Fisher Deberry coaches Air Force. He used to coach at Wofford. Wofford runs the same offense now that Air Force runs. It's a difficult offense to defend against if you are not accustomed to it (which USC is not). Air Force lost to Tennesse by one point. On paper, that shouldn't happen, but it did. This is the same Tennesse team that dismantled #9 Cal in the first week of the season. Wofford lost to USC by 7. It's the same thing with Wofford/USC as with Air Force/Tennessee. It's an anomaly.

Bottom line: The offense of Wofford is odd and hard to defend against. Now that we destroyed FAU, things are back to where they should be. The Cocks are 3-1, with the offense starting to click. Who knows what could happen Thursday night against Auburn?

Dont' get so down, folks, over an anomaly. The Wofford game shows as a "W", and we are off and running again after the FAU blowout.

You just have to keep in mind that we have 9 Seniors on this team and three of them are walkons that were given scholarships by Spurrier for their hussle. They are not great players and do not contribute much to our program. That in a nut shell is our problem. Spurrier will find a way to get our young skill people the ball and I will tell you this, our skill people are as good as there is in the SEC. We may not have an Offensive line to get them holes or protect the QB, but they are good. Hang in there, better days are coming.
