It's not really an issue for anyone else, I don't think. Very nice of the SEC to act "immediately" AFTER the USCe Game. Auburn needed the help, I guess.

It gave our team good practice for loud environments like UF, which is the only one I think that will be loud that we play away (vandy...no, Kentucky...no, Clemson will be but it will have plenty of SC fans to compensate).

good, just because you can't make the noise with your fans doesn't mean you should be able to produce it artificially
Now they make a decision.....
Anyways, good for the SEC.

See Duke doesn't have to worry about that...The fans don't make enough noise and, they don't care to make artificial noise. the most noise you'll hear at a Duke football game is the jingling of keys on a kick off.
deff. more noise at a basketball game..

I would imagine that nobody would go to a Duke game after getting blanked by I-AA Richmond, but hey, it's Duke. It's expected I guess.

Probably had more people at the Benedict-Savannah State game than will be at the next Duke game.

Hmmm Did Cowbells affect the outcome of the USC game,, NO! Just set up a great atmosphere. Slive was there, He could have stopped it if he had wanted to .. Give me a break, Just like OM,, Give em Rebel Flags and a Mascot, There was nothing wrong with what they have, Guys,,most of the teams is SEC have more in large cities than Mississippi has in the whole state, A few thousand Cowbells or rebel flags do not affect the outcome of a game, Go to LSU and see if it is not three times as loud as 45000 cowbells, Bet it is, Been there, Go Dawgs!

That's crap! Noone likes those dang cowbells, but MSU fans. The fact is, the SEC has had a rule about them and you all used them anyways.
I applaud the SEC for putting the bite back into their pitbull. If you don't like the rules of the SEC, go join the MAC or whatever.

The SEC didn't take away the flags or the mascot. Nor was it a rule for 30 some odd years that they were illegal anyway like artificial noisemakers.

There's a difference. How is cocky a form of air pollution?
It's jokers like you that try to excuse the breaking of conference rules by using the tradition card. That argument is about as seaworthy as the Titanic.
I heard a guy on the radio that reminds me of you. He argued the point of loud pipes on a Harley being the same as a Boeing 757 and that his pipes are not any different.
The difference between the two is that the jet is not made to be loud on purpose unlike the motorcycle. The cowbells are just a form of air pollution. Pure and simple.

no problem w/tradition but bells gotta git, its an attempted advantage from a noise standpoint...........if you can't put enough people in the stands then look for a nice cheer that you're 50,000 can all sing along together or take the clanger out of the bell and just ogle it w/admiration......then sit it down beside your bourbon bottle and sack of chew

i could really care less if MSU fans keep bringing and using the cowbells. my team wont be getting penalties called on them for it. if they want to keep hurting there team because of tradition than so be it. that is just one more game all of us other SEC fans can chalk up as a W.

The SEC and the NCAA have both ruled on them, so bring them on if you want to.
I would bet that after 3-4 15 yrd flags the coaching staff will be begging their REDNECK fans to back off with the bells and to leave them at home from then on!

My only problem with this cowbell issue is it seems to be a non-issue with most opposing coaches. Why is it so important? Has anyone ever stooped low enough to blame a loss at MSU on the Cowbells??
And one more big thing , why are rules and laws concerning drinking at SEC games ignored and then so much is made about the bells.
Most of the complaints I hear from SEC fans visiting other teams is the way they are treated by drunken fans of the home team. Why is this not a bigger issue than the bells??
So if you want to get rid of the bells , fine. But then let's get rid of the alcohol at games also. It is a much bigger problem............Wait.......It just hit me......People might stay at home if they couldn't drink and that would cost the SEC some money............................................. .................................................. .................................................. ..Nevermind , We couldn't have that could we????
Cianne
09-08-2006, 08:35 PM
People are always going to sneak in alcohol despite the fact that it is illegal. Same thing will happen with the cowbells. It's not a bigger issue, just an isolated one and thus easier to handle. However, as long as university employed security are checking, there won't be a serious reduction in the cowbells in Starkville.
Cowbells do make a slick dual wielding weapon along with a liquor bottle though. Don't wanna get in a fight with that guy.
AceLeroy
09-08-2006, 08:51 PM
People are always going to sneak in alcohol despite the fact that it is illegal.
It could be stopped , it would just cost money. Which is exactly my point. The bells are less of a problem than alcohol is , it is just easier to pick on the bells and much cheaper. It is hypocritical of the SEC to come down on MSU for the Cowbells while ignoring the bigger problem of alcohol abusive fans.

JUST WHO GIVES A FLYING DAMN ABOUT YOUR STUPID REDNECK BELLS?
Apparently, someone did. Personally, I can't see any harm that was caused by them. The MSU faithful were were certainly enamored of this "ancient" tradition. If someone was fearful it may set a noise precedent....that perhaps in Baton Rouge a foghorn tradition would come about...or some other ludicrous form of overt sound implementation in some other SEC town, well that was emphatically squelched. Yessiree...a statement was made, buddyboy..you can bet'cher bottom dollar on that one.
The innocent, harmless personal freedoms of each of us is being removed one cowbell at a time. And if you can't see that (and you can't)....well then.....
Listen, there's a hell of a good universe next door....
Let's go.....

How is it cheaper? Security doing their job would fix both problems at the same cost. However, people are innately against searches prior to going into the stadium despite there being probable cause, especially at student gates. This limits what security can do in searching for it.
In regards to the bells, I'd venture to say it's more expensive to remove cowbells, especially in Starkville. Imagine the number of personnel you would need to round up all the bells? They are much more likely to be stowed away, taped to the inside of a thigh, then a liquor bottle.

The "freedom" was "removed" back in the 70s when the NCAA banned them. As you can tell, nothing was actually removed.

It is cheaper because it would take TONS of more security to actually eliminate alcohol from the fans than it would the bells.
With the bells , they just start throwing flags when they hear them. As for the fans sneaking alcohol in , it is much easier to conceal and go unnoticed than the bells are.
Regardless of cost , I still say that drunken fans are a much bigger problem than someone ringing a cowbell.
I stand by this.......alcohol problems are being ignored while the SEC comes down on MSU for a tradition that has little or no effect on the game.

Ace is right they both are weapons. State loses a cow bell over "whatever" and Ole Miss loses a mascot over "whatever". Lets see another state's school tolerate what we put up with. I think only Illinois has had to deal with it too. The cow bells are something that has been a part of MS State football for too long to change now. Ok it was banned 30 years ago and they are just now going to enforce it? Stat of limits is how I see it. :brick: State, if can't get your cow bells in the game mail them to tub!

I brought in alcohol because it is a bigger problem than the bells.
I have read many complaints , even on this site , about people having to deal with drunk fans. I don't ever remember hearing anyone being assaulted by an MSU fan with a Cowbell.
Now come on , be honest.......What is abused more?? artificial noise makers or excessive drinking? Which one causes more problems on game day??

Also , there was an article in the Tupelo paper recently about someone getting killed by a drunk driver leaving an Ole Miss game in Oxford. I'm not picking on my rival , it has happened at many schools and after many games.
Now I am asking seriously......Why is the bell issue being dealt with so strongly while alcohol abuse is being ignored even though it has proven to be deadly?
