Now that the excitement has worn off and now that the media machine has moved onto other things, let's try to put the Vols' opening "big" win in context. For starters, all Big Orange faithful saw this coming the second the Vols left the field in Lexington last November. As painful and unimaginable as last season was, you just knew that there would be a renewed since of pride and determination going into this season. Frankly, Cal was more a victim of circumstance because it would not have mattered who the sacrificial lamb on the other sideline was. Rankings and expectations meant nothing as Saturday night was much more about Tennessee regaining respect and regaining their stature as an elite program as opposed to Xs and Os.
Now I'm certainly not here to make such claims or to proclaim that Tennessee is indeed "back", but Saturday certainly was a much needed and over-due step in the right direction.
My views:
First, you could tell that Cut was back!!! That's a great thing...there was some imagination to the play calling with some misdirection plays and moving Ainge around in the pocket is certainly only going to help him. I think they kept Cal's defense off balance all night long with the play calling. Sanders' predictability has been replaced with Cut's imagination!! Big plus!!!
Secondly, Chavis looks like he has another great defense. The Vols had arguably the best defense in the SEC last year and they don't look like they have missed a beat. Cal's run game was a non-factor and they kept the Bears' QBs running the entire game. Chavis had a great gameplan that was very well executed in this game. The Vols could not have imagined a better result than they ended up with on Saturday night. Rocky Top had not sounded that good in a long time.
NOW for reality:
Cal's defense was/is HORRIBLE!! They made an average Vol offense look really good. Despite the gaudy stats, Ainge still looked pretty shaky to me. The Gators' DBs have GOT to be praying that Ainge continues to throw those weak out patterns. If Cal had some good CBs, the game may have been very different. Not to mention that Cal never really pressured Ainge so we still don't truly know how much progress he has made. Finally, the running game looked very average as well. Again, poor fundamentals by Cal's defense really hid this in the final stats. The Vol O-Line and RBs better get this fixed before the 16th. Bottom line....Cal was VERY overrated or at least certainly severely under-achived!!
Good feelings are rightly restored on Rocky Top and for good reason. The Vols served notice on Saturday night that last year was a fluke and they ARE a force to be reckoned with once again. Let's just keep it all in perspective...the Vols still have opportunities to address and Ainge STILL has alot to improve upon before we can serioulsy talk about any type of championships, but it is nice to have a reason to talk again!!
GO VOLS!!!

Don't count your chickens until the eggs are hatched. I still look back at Tenn. victory over LSU last season. Its too early in the season to say "Tennessee is back". They may certainly be back but just remember what everyone was saying about their comeback win over LSU early in the 2005 season. Lets give it a few weeks. :)

I got a chance to watch the replay of the TENN/CAL game last night and I was very impressed with Tennessee. Ainge looked as comfortable as I've ever seen him, the defense was lights-out awesome, and the team speed was very evident. Meacham was outstanding. Given Florida's rather slow start and Georgia's unimpressive offensive showing against a non-entity, I think Tennessee is on top of the East. I worry about my Tigers going into Neyland later this year. The Vols look very, very good, IMO.

The Vols looked good. Congrats on the victory. I was not/never will be on your side but you dominated that game. Good job.

good post....i posted the same thing about the cal D but i think it will go over a little better coming from a vol fan. i was equally impressed with the vol D, but also equally unimpressed with the cal D.

The defense impressed me the most. Poor tacking contributed to UT's point total, but the defensive shutdown of Tedford, Lynch & Co. was very impressive.

From Reports I've been hearing CutCliffe and GA Clausen picked up on hand signal suggesting the Thompson was going to be alone on Meachum. That's why the 2 hitch passes worked Still, Ainge had 1 bad throw, but what really impressed me was:

O-Line: UT had 0, count them 0, plays for negative yardage, Also, No offsides penalties(1 on extra point attempt), no Delay of Game Penalties, and No time outs to get the play in in time. Huge improvement on O-Line Disipline.

ST: No Turnovers! (Did we have a game last year where we didn't muff at least one punt? 60 Yard Punt by Colquit (No Bounce that is the distance it traveled) One Pooch punt Caught and downed at the 5 by D. Mo)

D-line: Stuffed the run completely

LB: Blitzed QB well, great field coverage, were all over the place..

Just a well played game all around.

Yea when people talk about this game some miss a lot of great factors and some over exagerate. It was a great game no1 can deny it. Cal did have a bad D no1 can deny it. But either way we pretty much dominated the game in all aspects

I am pleased primarily with the lack of mistakes( unnecessary pen.,dropped passes, fumbles ,etc.). We certainly haven't profed much yet based on this win. Ainge did look comfortable.

However, I'm gonna give the running more credit than VolHT does. Foster averaged 4.05 yds a carry, Coker 4.8, and even if you take Hardesty's 43 yd bad-tackling TD run away, he gets 3.5. ...And none of these guys really had a chance to get in a rhythm.

Still along way to go and the Ainge out routes are a big concern. Mentally, UT looks way ahead of last yr based on this one, though
