Quarterback position
The quarterback position is perhaps the strength of the team with three outstanding field generals. The battle for the starting position going into Summer workouts and Fall practice was projected to be very close, but that has not been the case. JaMarcus Russell, based on strong performances in the three Fall scrimmages, has made himself a strong number one at this time. Matt Flynn is number two on the depth chart but only by a hair over Ryan Perrilloux. I believe that all three quarterbacks will play in the first game of the season against ULL. Grade A
Running backs
After the completion of the 2006 signing class and at the end of Spring practice, the running back position was considered the second strongest position on the team behind the quarterback position. Today the running back position is a little shaky without Alley Broussard not being 100 percent ready to play, but the arrival of Keiland Williams is a real plus, and Richard Murphy should be cleared by the Clearinghouse this week. Jacob Hester and Justin Vincent will open the season number one and number two on the depth chart until Broussard is back to his 2004 form. Charles Scott and Antonio Robinson will be number three and four on the depth chart at least until Williams and Murphy are acclimated and learn the system. Even with all the uncertainty at the position, I still believe the running back position is in good shape. Grade A
Offensive line
The offensive line has plenty of question marks depth-wise. Brett Helms will be the starting Center. Will Arnold and Brian Johnson will be the two starting guards. Peter Dyakowski and Ciron Black will be the two starting tackles. Ryan Miller, Herman Johnson, Max Holmes, Carnell Stewart, Garrett Wibel and Paris Hodges will be the key backup offensive linemen unless a couple of walk-ons and true freshmen step forward. Grade B-
Tight Ends and Wide Receivers
In my opinion, LSU has the best group of wide receivers on the same team in the SEC. Dwayne Bowe, Craig Davis and Early Doucet will be the three starters with Brandon LaFell being the fourth wide receiver when the team uses the four-man set. Four freshmen, Chris Mitchell, Jared Mitchell, Ricky Dixon and Trindon Holliday, will play key backup roles. Holliday will also return kicks. Grade A+
Keith Zinger, Mitch Cole, Andrew Wright and Kyle Anderson are the returning TE’s. True freshmen Richard Dickson and J.D. Lott have been impressive in Fall workouts. Dickson will see playing time as a true freshman with J.D. Lott most likely receiving a redshirt year. Grade B
