QB from UGA leads final drive

D.J. Shockley didn't flinch when faced with his first major test as a professional.

Shockley, a seventh-round pick from the University of Georgia, passed with flying colors Friday in the Falcons' 26-23 exhibition victory over New England.

Quarterback D.J. Shockley, conferring with offensive coordinator Greg Knapp, turned in a big play in the final drive, connecting with Kevin Youngblood for 14 yards on third down.

With overtime looking like a possibility, Shockley gathered up a group of Falcons reserves with under three minutes to play and drove them down the field for a game-winning field goal as time expired.

"It feels good to get your feet wet out there in the game, just be able to play on the squad and kind of participate in what's going on," Shockley said. "To drive the team down within two minutes and get a win ... it's just a preseason game, but it's a win for the team. That's one step closer to what we are trying to do."

The drive started at the Falcons' 22-yard line with 2:34 left.

After a 4-yard run by DeAndra Cobb and an incompletion, Shockley made his first big play on third-and-6. He broke loose and found tight end Jason Randall for a 10-yard gain.

Over the next seven plays and two timeouts, Shockley faced another third down, this time needing 7 yards from New England's 38. Shockley found Kevin Youngblood for a 14-yard gain and put the Falcons in field-goal range.

After a spike and a 2-yard gain by Cobb, Michael Koenen came out to kick the 40-yard field goal.

"I think everybody knew that we did this in practice," Shockley said. "We knew that it may come down to this. It's kind of different in a game-time situation, but I think everybody knew we had to go down and make something happen. Everybody said, let's go down and do it."

Michael Vick, the Falcons' starting quarterback, was impressed with Bryan Randall, who played the third quarter, and Shockley.

"They both looked good," Vick said. "Shockley was put in a tough situation and showed that he was able to bring the team back and put the younger guys on his back."

Shockley entered the game with 10:37 left to play. The cheers were expected, but the barking that engulfed the Georgia Dome threw coach Jim Mora for a loop.

"I haven't been to a Georgia game, I just haven't had a chance," Mora said. "But I figured it out quickly.

"I knew what the roar was about, but I hadn't heard the barking."

Mora went out of his way to praise all of his quarterbacks. He didn't want to single out Shockley and lend credence to the notion that he has already won the race for the No. 3 quarterback over Randall.

"I thought that all of the quarterbacks played well," Mora said.

When pressed further, he had to concede that Shockley's unflappable play was impressive.

"He showed the poise that we've seen in practice everyday," Mora said. "When he came to the sidelines, he'd look you in the eye — he was just very calm, very focused, very poised. I though he and Bryan both did an excellent job in the second half."

Did Norwood play in that game?

Yes he did.........7 carries for 22 yards , 2 catches for 71 yards. Late in the third , he caught a short pass and put a great move on a defender then turned on the speed to score.

Great to see Jerious doing well!!!

Unfortunately for D.J., I don't think Mike Vick is necessarily the greatest mentor. Vick is continually making things happen with his feet and D.J. has much the same ability. I don't think coaches these days want their QBs to run so much. But who knows maybe Vick will get hurt and D.J. will get a chance to play.

I think the only thing DJ will let Vick mentor him in is things not to do. And besides, DJ is the better passer.
