Have you read his mag? There's a lot of "somethins wrongs" in it as well. This guy likes to go against the grain...sometimes, he hits it big....sometimes he's waaaayyyyy offff!

Looks like Phil has made Arkansas his if-I'm-right-everyone-will-think-I'm-a-GAWD pick for the year.

Also, strange that he's got Kentucky and Mississippi State above Ole Miss. Geaux figure!

Phil Steele is consistently THE BEST prognosticator year in and year out. If you will go back and read previous issues and see how things turned out you'll see that.

He goes against the grain in that most mags do all their predictions based on the year before with minor tweaking due to Graduation. Steele puts a lot of emphasis on whether a team had an inordinate # of turnovers and close games go against them along with those factors.

Look at what he said about TN last yr. vs. what other folks said. It made me mad, too, Gator Hater. BUT He had us pegged much to my chagrin

Also, note that his Power Rankings do not reflect his feelings of how teams will finish the season.
Power rankings are starting positions for betting purposes and change dramatically week to week early in the season. No consideration to schedules, home fields, or motivation factors is taken into account.

I agree and his College football preview is by far the best you can buy in my opinion.

I think Phil Steele is one of the best analysis out there, but I don't see us finishing second in the West this year nor do I see Auburn finishing first. This is what I've got:

West:

1. LSU

2. Auburn

3. Arkansas

4. Alabama

5. Ole Miss

6. Mississippi State

East:

1. Tennessee

2. Georgia

3. Florida (schedule sucks to much)

4. South Carolina

5. Kentucky

6. Vanderbilt

Although he did predict Tennessee last season, so who knows. Still it is a good read.

Here are the current Vegas odds on teams winning the SEC. I'm thinking of averaging the power rankings and these... Then taking my tenth place winnings in the SEC pickem and retiring.....

Alabama 8/1
Arkansas 25/1
Auburn 2/1
Florida 8/5
Georgia 6/1
Kentucky 200/1
LSU 11/5
Mississippi 20/1
Mississippi State 100/1
South Carolina 8/1
Tennessee 15/2
Vanderbilt 100/1

Geaux why not have MSU over Ole Piss, we beat the heck out of them last year. And we have a lot returning from that team.

Earlier, Ole Miss was listed at around 100-1. Then Mr. QB showed up.....

I hope he can live up to the hype he is receiving preseason.

Steele's mags are usually either right on or way off...that's why we play the games

GATWUA, Steele did not pick TN last year. See Page 30:
He's got :
1. GA
2. Fla
3. TN
Also, had LSU, AUB, Bama in that order.

He puts a lot more weight ( for prognosticating purposes) on YPG diff. than strictly Ws vs. Ls. Hence, '04 TN went 7-1 in conf play, but only outgained SEC opp by 14ypg( 7th in conf.), won several very close games, and got the TO breaks. So, essentially, Phil thought the Vols were lucky to come out so well.

Conversely, he saw that last year they outgained SEC opp by 28.6 ypg, lost several close games, and were dismal in TO ratio. Therefore, the Vols got no breaks last year and he expects that to correct itself.

Actually, the YPG diff is a very telling stat if you watch it over time.

I don't think I would guarantee Ole Miss having a better chance than Ark but Vegas doesn't lose money!

Oh I'm not saying he predicted yal ending up the way you did, I think God would have had a hard time with that, but when almost every publication in the country had TN winning the SEC (and as high as pre-season 2) he predicted yal 3rd in the East. I'm not saying he is right, but you do have to give him props for going against the grain.

Im not sure if you're aware of this but Geaux has no bearing on how your Bulldogs actually play

I notice the Gamecocks have stayed out of this thread. No doubt we've all read it. But IMO, this is alot of the same we hear and see every year. Nothing new to report, so to speak. I think our silence is bridled optimism.

No offense but that is funny! A gamecock saying "our silence is bridled optimism" is hilarious! A large part of why I come to this board is USC not being silent! Y'all have plenty of optimism in your witty posts but rarely silent!

I thought you meant that he'd picked TN to win the East last year, hence, my previous post.

Apparently we're in agreement. Phil Steele has been consistently better at making picks than any other publication over the last 5-10 yrs.

We have a shot at the SEC west this year, as long as our guys stay healthy, and we keep the QB situation figured out... Phil has been pretty on target majority of the time.

I don't know how I can say that I am both an LSU and Gator fan, but I've grown up in Louisiana and been an LSU fan my entire life and that doesn't go away, even while I will attend UF. I think personally that LSU could go either way this year. They could pull off great results against a tough schedule and upset the Auburn Tigers as the SEC West favorites. On the other side, they could break down and lose 3 or 4 games this year. Their home schedule is pretty easy this year, which actually has me worried. I would much rather see LSU play their tough games in Tiger Stadium because it's a lot tougher for opponents to win there. LSU has a killer road schedule that will either make or break them. I think they are the toughest to predict this year.
