The toughest and most intimidating college football stadiums in America!

#1 LSU – Tiger Stadium- Baton Rouge, LA
“Death Valley”
-Built 1924
-Attendance: 91,209; Largest: 92,664 vs. Auburn 2005
-LSU home record: 347-138-18 (.708 ); Since 1990: 70-35; Since 2000: 35-6
-Rivals ’05 rank: #2

-Legendary 'Bama coach Bear Bryant once remarked that Tiger Stadium is the worst place in the world to be a visiting team because playing there is "like playing inside of a drum."
-During a nationally televised game against Auburn in 2003, ESPN recorded a noise level of 117 decibels.
-"It was like being in the Colliseum in Rome and we were the Christians." -long time Georgia Tech coach Bobby Dowd.
-“The Earthquake Game:” Crowds reaction to a game winning TD against Auburn in 1988 registered on a seismograph in the LSU Geology Department.
-ESPN sideline reporter Adrian Karsten said in 2001, "Death Valley in Baton Rouge is the loudest stadium I've ever been in. There are very few stadiums in America worth a touchdown, but the Bayou Bengals certainly have that advantage in Tiger Stadium"
-What you said: “I can vouch for the Saturday night game at LSU... you may call it a myth - BUT I witnessed my undefeated #1 ranked Gators who had beaten 25 straight SEC opponents come in to LSU in 1997 for a Saturday night game and completely lose it. Sure it wasn't the stadium that won, but I was there and it was loud and nuts... after the win my date (he went to LSU) stormed the field and broke his arm, I sat alone in the stands crying. Good times. But you can't tell me that it's only a myth - that stadium and those Saturday night games are REALLY tough on opponents.” – TSN member Krisearl

#2. Ohio State- Ohio Stadium- Columbus, OH
“The Horseshoe”
-Built 1922
-Attendance: 102, 329; Largest: 105,565 vs. Texas 2005
-OSU home record: 334-101-20
-Rivals ’05 rank: #3
-NCAA Football 07 rank: #2
-What Rivals said: “Gamedays at Ohio State have it all – the tailgating, The Best Damn Band in the Land and the tens of thousands of frenzied fans build one of the richest traditions in American sports. And when it all comes together inside the stadium, the Buckeyes' have one of the largest and most intimidating home crowds in college football.”

#3 Florida- Ben Hill Griffin Stadium- Gainesville, FL
“The Swamp”
-Built 1930
-Attendance: 88,548; Largest: 90,707 vs. Wyoming 2005
-Florida home record: 262-90-13 (.717); Since 1990: 81-11-0
-Rivals ’05 rank: #4
-NCAA Football 07 rank: #1
-What Rivals said: “It's possible that no college football venue is more intimidating than the house that Steve Spurrier built… the stadium has seen more home victories since 1990 than has any other stadium in the SEC. In fact, the Florida Gators rank third in the nation with a .880 home winning percentage during that span.”
-Playing surface is below ground and field temps can accede 100 degrees
-Has sold out every home game since 1979
-68-5 at The Swamp under Spurrier's from 1990-2001, including a 30-game win streak (Oct. 29, 1994 - Sept. 18, 1999).
-What you said: “The best is THE SWAMP…only gators come out alive. At the end of the third quarter, we sing and sway you actually get woozy looking at the fans going back and forth, it’s the best stadium in all football.” – TSN member Mizzou826

-Oregon home record:118-82-5 (.588 win %)
-Rivals ’05 rank: #6
-NCAA Football 07 rank: #13
-What Rivals said: “The fans at the Autzen Zoo are noisy, wild and obnoxious – in short, they're everything college fanatics should be. With an enrollment of just over 20,000 students, though, most of the Ducks' seats are filled by alums that can be just as jovially hostile as their younger counterparts.”

#5 Virginia Tech- Lane Stadium- Blacksburg, VA
"Home of the Fighting Gobblers"
-1965
-Attendance: 66,233; Largest: 86,092 vs. Florida State 1999
-VA Tech home record:156-63-6
-Rivals ’05 rank: #1
-NCAA Football 07 rank: #5
-What Rivals said: “Every good stadium has at least one end designed for deafening noise levels, and the enclosed South End Zone at Lane Stadium fits the bill perfectly. Holding more than 11,000 screaming Virginia Tech fans, the section amplifies noise and renders audibles useless. That's not to mention the isolation factor. With the nearest major airport nearly 45 minutes away, opponents' fans are never out in force at Lane Stadium.”

#6 Penn State- Beaver Stadium- College Park, PA
“Happy Valley”
-Built 1960
-Attendance: 107,282; Largest: 110,753 vs. Nebraska in 2001
-PSU home record:
-Rivals ’05 rank: #5
-NCAA Football 07 rank: #4
-What Rivals said: “Though Beaver Stadium's attendance numbers are impressive in their own right, the proof of true home field advantage lies in football records. In the last 44 years, Penn State has won 79 percent of their home games. The pregame 'bull in the ring' drill-- performed by defensive backs and linebackers -- always serves to get the crowd rowdy.”

#7 Auburn- Jordan-Hare Stadium- Auburn, AL
-Built 1939
-Attendance: 87,451; Largest: 87,451 vs. LSU 2004
-Auburn home record: 236-59-7
-Rivals '05 rank: #10
-NCAA Football 07 rank: #20
-What Rivals said: "Besides the impressive noise and intensity level inside Jordan-Hare Stadium on gamedays, the Tigers are just downright hard to beat at home, too. Auburn boasts a .798 winning percentage at home over the last 65 years.
-During a game against South Carolina, the Gamecock offense had to burn two timeouts trying to get off one play because of the noise level.
-On Saturdays during the fall in Auburn, Jordan-Hare stadium becomes Alabama's fifth-largest city.
-Team enters to 'Eye of the Tiger'.
-What you said: Auburn hasn't lost a home SEC game in 2 years...and knocked off 3 top-10 teams at home in that span. It would have been 3 straight years had Ben Obomanu not dropped a wide open pass in the end zone against Ole Miss in 2003. No other SEC team has been undefeated at home in conference play over the past 2 years. - TSN member toe34.

#8 Wisconsin- Camp Randall Stadium- Madison, WI.

Located in the middle of one of the best college towns in America (rated #1 by SI On Campus), Badgerland boasts a fraternity-party atmosphere in a crowd which doubled in size during the Barry Alvarez era.”

#9 Texas A&M- Kyle Field- College Station, TX

-NCAA Football 07 rank: #11
-What Rivals said: "Where else can you find 40,000 students gather at midnight before the game for yell practice?"
-Traditions include "The Aggie War Hymn", Silver Taps, Farmers Fight and the Elephant Walk.

#10 Clemson- Clemson Memorial Stadium/ Frank Howard Field- Clemson, SC
“Death Valley”
-Built 1942
-Attendance: 81,473 ; Largest: 86,092 vs. Florida State 1999

-Former FSU QB Chris Rix called it the loudest place he’s ever been.
-"I came here knowing it would be loud and that Clemson would hit me hard, but to me, the noise was the biggest factor. I know I didn't concentrate as well because of it."- HOF RB Herschel Walker after in 1981 after his only regular season loss at Georgia.

Sorry, the Swamp has to be #1.

I'll go to my homer grave on this one. If "Death Valley" is all about the night game, it can't be the toughest venue. The toughest venue has to be difficult at any time during the day, certainly AS difficult as a night game, and less-U clearly isn't as loud or problematic in the afternoon. Whatever reason Geaux gives for that, btw, is completely irrelevant. It's a prerequisite for the top honor.

In any event, BHGS is louder than even DV at night--1988 "earthquake" game or not (I find it interesting that fans keep claiming an "event" that's almost 20 years old....shouldn't it happen during every night game, especially after stadium expansions and such?). Warrick Dunn said he actually felt the field moving under his feet during the 1993 UF/f$u game. Hey, when you have to keep your balance while you're standing still, only moving once your teammates begin the play because you can't hear your own voice, THAT's loud. Ask Hunter how loud BHG gets: he suffered permanent hearing damage/loss during a Florida home game. I can't imagine it gets any louder than dB levels that cause physical injury....

Also, as an aside, UF fans topped 130dBs during the outside gameday telecast last year (a gameday record). And it goes without saying (but I will anyway) that a few hundred fans should never be louder than an entire stadium.

BTW: The Horseshoe shouldn't even be in the top five, imo. Off the top of my head, Less-U, Bama, UT, and Michigan are tougher.

I have to agree with GN...homer or not, BHGS is the loudest I've ever been in...you cannot even use your headphones to listen to your team announcer...I do have the new Bose headphones, I'm interested to see if they work.

I know this info. comes from a "blog"...but Tiger Stadium has to be a joke...LSU has went undefeated at home...what 1-2 times in the past 25 years?!?! Doesn't sound like too intimidating of a stadium to me...:)

I guess you don't know much about Autzen Stadium, because it's a madhouse in there. They are deserving of #4 if not higher.

You Gators slay me. Everyone in the world knows we're the toughest.

Oh, by the way, BHGS (aka The Swamp) will be loud this year... during the LSU/Florida game... reason? Seaux many LSU fans will be there leading DisturbinUrban to another crying episode at games end.

Well, you can't be the toughest when you guys let a true freshman come into your house and beat you (2003). Where was the earthquake then? Oh, that's right, it was around a 2pm kickoff....

The correct answer is The Swamp......and I don't mind Oregon at #4.

Okay, i know i'm probably biased since i'm a big ole cock, but I went to NC State @ Clemson a few years back with a friend, and the rock thing is probably more like the most boring 25 seconds in college football.

 .....you are seaux wrong my friend....I can't wait to see the look on lessie's face...you kneaux the look, saw it last season vs UT in the dreaded "death valley"...you kneaux, the team that didn't even qualify for a bowl that beat y'all after you were up 21-0 in the first half....that look...that's the look he'll have this season after the first quarter....

I can honestly say that the only stadium that's ever intimidated me is JH in Auburn...mainly because I knew that we would get zero calls and get cussed out! But tigger stadium has never, not once given me an ounce of fear...heck, I was shocked that we didn't spank y'all last season!

After watching games on TV for so long, I have to say Autzen Stadium is definitely deserving of a top ten ranking. They raise a heck of a ruckus in there. I am a little shocked by the fact that Neyland didn't crack the top ten though, beaten by a stadium like Wisconsin??? As of late, we haven't had much to cheer about so I guess it is deserving to be where it is. However, UF, LSU and Clemson all belong in the top ten. They are extremely loud and rowdy and annoying (primarily the Chomp).

Overall, the rest of the big SEC schools should have been ranked higher than that. BDS gets loud as hell and Between the Hedges is pretty ugly on Saturdays. Trying to listen to the Vols play them on the radio is tough because Kesling has to fight crowd noise so we can hear. Kudos to SEC schools, we know our football and we cheer hard for it.

These are the real SportingNews rankings, the ones previously posted were just some guy's from a blog.

http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=115554

After a brief break, I'm back to list the overall top 10 most intimidating stadiums in the nation. Over the last month, I ranked the stadiums in the six BCS conferences -- but based them on current factors. If a team is hot, the intimidation factor of its stadium was high (see: Auburn).

For the overall top 10, it's back to the basics -- the 10 most intimidating stadiums for one game and one game only.

1. Autzen Stadium, Oregon
2. Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, Florida
3. Kyle Field, Texas A&M
4. Tiger Stadium, LSU
5. Doak Campbell Stadium, Florida State
6. Ohio Stadium, Ohio State
7. Lane Stadium, Virginia Tech
8. Jordan-Hare Stadium, Auburn
9. Notre Dame Stadium, Notre Dame
10. Memorial Stadium, Nebraska

A few thoughts:

Trust me on Autzen. Just go to the place and soak it all in. Before they throw dirt on you, take a trip to Eugene one fall Saturday.

Sit in the stands at the end of the third quarter at Florida and Texas A&M. "We Are the Boys" and "The Aggie War Hymn" are what college football is all about.

If you've never been to Ohio Stadium, get there early and watch the Best Damn Band In The Land during pregame. If you don't get a chill during Script Ohio, you don't have a college football soul.

Best introduction in college football: "Enter Sandman" at Virginia Tech.

Best college football pregame atmosphere this side of The Grove: Notre Dame and Nebraska.

Yeah, three SEC schools. Go to one and experience the madness.

You are correct. That was in 2000. UAB won 13-10. Florida drubbed us 41-9 in the Swamp. We also lost to Auburn 34-17 at J-H and Arkansas 14-3 in Little Rock. We managed to beat Western Carolina 58-0, Houston 28-13, Tennessee 38-31, Kentucky 34-0, Miss State 48-38, Alabama 30-28, and Ole Miss 20-9 at Oxford. We beat Georgia Tech 28-14 in the Peach Bowl. I think that was Nick Saban's first year at LSU.

mmmm.... Geaux picks Death Valley, GN picks The Swamp, I guess I can take Neyland and not feel guilty.

Dude, Vaught Hemmingway? No way does is ever make a top stadium list. One, it's kinda small in case you haven't been out of Oxford lately. Two, the students there are more concerned with picking up a date than who wins the game. Yall's baseball stadium durning the Super Regional is louder than the football stadium. I'm not sure if it makes the Top-10 in the SEC.

There is a reason LSU fans don't sit on their hands or directly in their seats at death valley. Those seats have been puked in and pissed on so many times it's just unsanitary.

I'm going to appease all the Hawg fans in here and say that "The Rock" is a pretty tough place to play. It's a little small, but it's loud. I think yall are like everything and 1. I was there for that one. Geaux Tigers. But Death Valley is definitely No. 1. And we don't piss in our seats, we walk over to the visitors sideline.
