View Full Version : How Are Your Coordinators?

Jimbo Fisher - Offensive Coordinator
While Jimbo receives lots of accolades from local sports talk radio and in the media, I am not very pleased with him. He is forever running the ball up the middle on 3rd and long, and he has failed to adequately develop JaMarcus Russell. His play calling leaves a lot to be desired, IMO, and I look forward to his departure someday.
Bo Pelini - Defensive Coordinator
When he first came last year, he made some horrendous mistakes that had me calling for his head. But, as the season progressed, so did Bo's defenses. He now seems very adequate to me and will likely field one of the better defenses in the SEC. It's hard to follow a defensive act like Will Muschamp and Nick Saban.
Overall, who has the best set of coordinators in the SEC?
I would say Auburn. Both coordinators are very, very good, IMO.
Additionally, I think Cutcliffe at Tennessee is terrific, as well.

I've been very impressed with Borges at Au since his arrival. Wouldn't trade Chavis with anybody else's DC. As for Spurrier, I expect him to make strides this year, but you can't put him at the top based on last year ( so jury's still out). I expect great things from Cutcliffe, but it wouldn't be right to rate him yet either. ( I know it will be an improvement.
As GT says, LSU is solid at both spots , but probably neither is the conference's best.Obviously, Richt is doing alot of things right at GA. Does he have an OC there? Or is it him? he?

Woody McCorvey (current MSU O-Coord.), and Sparky Woods (previous MSU O-Coord.) are tied for last.
Ellis Johnson ranks in the 3-5 range as a D-Coordinator.

I agree with Gamecockboy...Spurrier is the best O-Cord. in the conference. I think our D-Cord. will prove to be pretty good after this season. He came from Southern Miss and they always had great defenses while he was there. I expect he will have us looking better this year than last(granted, its not saying much...).
As far as overall quality on both sides of the ball I agree with Geaux. Any team that can lose a backfield like Williams, Ronnie Brown, and Jason Campbell and still put up the numbers they did last has someone thats pretty dang good holding the reins...and we all know how their defense is every year.

How are Auburns Cooridinators? The best in the SEC, that's how they are!
Borges was recently called 'God' in a preseason poll article.
Our D Cooridnator already one a MNC with LSU.

Georgia's offensive coordinator is actually the O-line coach, Neil Callaway. I'm not sold on our defensive coordinator yet. We'll see this year.
Borges is very creative, but let's face it when it comes to offense, no one is better at drawing plays in the dirt like Spurrier. He comes up with new plays during the game. Who else does that?
On defense, I really like Muschamp. He is a Georgia boy and he led a lot of great defenses at LSU with Saban. He'll have to prove he can do it without Saban, but I think he can. Chavis or Kines would be next for me. All though when Kines was at Georgia, he loved that bend but don't break crappy defense. Now he pins the ears back and gets after them. I guess his time at FSU showed him some new tricks.

IMO the coaching job Borges did in 04 rivals anything Spurrier EVER did (not saying Borges is better than Spurrier in the least, don't get me wrong here).
He turned Jason Campbell into the star he was supposed to be. Campbell was a parade all american out of high school but poor decisions under pressure and untimley INT's held him back. Borges was Jason's 4th O-Cooridnator in 4 years (that's a new one every year for you Bama grads) and Al finally brought Campbell out of his shell.
But the best part was his playcalling. That was the nicest playcalling throughout a year that I've ever seen. It seemed like we opened every game with a 30 yarder. Go to youtube and watch the vids from the SEC Championship and the Sugar Bowl. Both against rock hard D's, both opening plays went for 30+ yards. Both first drives were successful (as were almost all of Auburn's first drives of the year).
But his best play calling came on two 4th and 15's @ LSU, both to Courtney Taylor, the 1st keeping the final drive alive and the 2nd scoring the winning TD.
I wouldn't trade Borges for any other O-Coordinator in the nation at this point (I said O-Coordinator, that excludes Spurrier)

Geaux,
Ask me this question again right after the third game of the year.
Borges was better then advertised when he was hired and Muschamp is an unknown for me as of right now....
By the way, my opinion will not only be based solely on whether we win or not....

Spurrier's offense ranked 100th in the nation overall last year. I'm not counting him out mind you - like I said earlier, let's wait and see. But to proclaim him as best based on what he did almost a decade ago and ignore last year is wearing blinders.

I cannot agree more. Borges is the best OC, not only in the SEC, but in the country. It's amazing to me that he hasn't gone to a head coaching job somewhere.

I don't think there is any doubt right now that Auburn's OC and DC are superior. There is nobody in Borges' class, and maybe not in Muschamp's class either, unless it might be Kines of Alabama. You're right about the 3rd game; it's going to tell us a lot.

I can't believe Richt is letting Neil Callaway be the OC, he wore both hats at Auburn and STUNK as an OC......Callaway had the Cadillac, Ronnie Brown, jason Campbell, Rudi Johnson, etc and he didnt do shitzkies, then Borges walks in and ta da!
Kines best DC in the conference right now, Muschamp certainly has the resume, we'll see

Though Neil is the OC, Richt actually calls the plays. Many Georgia fans wish he would bring in an OC, or give more play calling duties to Mike Bobo, QB Coach.
