Most Common Traits: MNC (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/football/ncaa/specials/preview/2004/mainbar/index.html)
Myth: You need an explosive offense.
Myth: The best teams have a veteran, star quarterback.
Myth: You need to have top-10 recruiting classes.
Myth: You've got to start high in the polls to finish high.
Myth: Coaching experience matters.
Reality: You have to stop the run.
Reality: Both the offensive and defensive lines should be dominant.
Reality: Create more turnovers than you allow.
Reality: You need at least one gamebreaker on both sides of the ball.
Reality: Luck has to be on your side.

Pretty accurate Geaux. My thoughts are a dominate defense will win 9 times out of 10 in the big game.
Having a star QB is not a necessity, having a smart QB who makes good decisions and reads the defense properly will be able to control the ball and game clock.
I will take a smash em in the mouth defense like LSU had a couple of years back everytime over a Miami or USC style offense.

The only part that made me laugh was his reference to Neb. being dominant upfront and not giving up a sack all year. Did they throw the ball?

Thank you for that - I agree with that assessment and was trying to make that point a few weeks back with those pesky Gator posters.

Geaux a question if I might....
How much did Broussard and Russell weigh in today for their first practice?

Myth: You've got to start high in the polls to finish high.
That's the only myth I would disagree with. I read the entire article and their example of BYU in 1984 was a bad one, because all of the "traditional powers" lost a game and BYU stayed undefeated.
While there were probably many reasons Auburn got left out of the championship game two years ago, I think where they started in the preseason polls was probably the biggest. If USC or OU would have squeaked by crap teams week after week, Auburn might have had a shot to pass one of them, but otherwise it was never going to happen. They both started the year at the top, and no voter was going to knock them down unless they lost or looked horrible in multiple games.

Hmm, ok. I guess that was some technicality. The article said it was BYU and BYU's website says it was BYU. I was 7 at the time, so I have no clue.
I'd be careful if I were you. Some angry Mormon might come marry all your sisters.

Depends on which polling service you look at....
1984
Brigham Young: AP, Football Research, FW, National Championship Foundation*, NFF, Poling, UPI, USA/CNN
Florida: Billingsley, DeVold, Dunkel, FACT, Matthews, NY Times, Sagarin, Sporting News
Nebraska: Litkenhous
Washington: Berryman, FB News, National Championship Foundation*

I was joking...even though, that was probably one of the best...from top to bottom...teams UF has ever fielded...and most sports analyst agreed that Florida was the best team in the nation at years end. We learned the week of the f$u game that the NCAA was barring us from bowl participation and the SEC later stripped us of the 1984 SEC Championship...although, we still have the trophy;)
