Six SEC schools finished the athletic season ranked among the top 25 in the nation in the final 2006 Director's Cup standings the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors announced. The SEC teams include Florida (No. 5), Georgia (No. 9), Tennessee (No. 14), LSU (No. 20), Alabama (No. 21), and Auburn (No. 25).

Stanford secured the top spot in the Director's Cup for the 12th consecutive year with 1197.375 points, followed by UCLA (1071.375), Texas (966), North Carolina (952.75) and SEC member Florida (913) rounding out the top five.
