He may have found the necessary motivation ($$$) to overcome his inconsistency on the court. I wish him the best and hope he plays a long time for the NBA.

Wow, he sounds impressive. If he'd played like that all season (this year AND last), we'd have been a shoo-in for the NCAA Tournament.
Back-to-back NIT titles sounds pretty good though.

even in that piece they mention he might be CLIMBING into the top of the 2nd round. that means no guaranteed contract (unless the rules have changed and i was unaware). there's no doubt in my mind that he should absolutely come back for another year unless his family just desparately needs some cash.

even though he's rising his stock up, I dont think he can rise it up too much. NBA scouts are going to look at what he has done is college, and they aren't going to like the inconsistency. He needs to prove himself for the entire season and he could make a lot more money if he comes back. He should really come back next year, where he could be a mid-late first round early second. Right now he's looking at late second or undrafted. I hope this scenario dosen't duplicate that one guy's from Kentucky last year, where he had to be reinstated into the SEC. I wish him the best of luck though. If he does get drafted he'll be the first player from USC to make it to the NBA in a while.

I agree, he should definitely come back for one more year. But this article sounds like he's reached payday. Football injuries seem to be more career limiting than basketball, although I'm not saying it doesn't happen. But all the same, another year for Balkman at USC could help his signing bonus considerably.

The team GPA for the basketball team this semester was a 1.9. There is some speculation that Balkman HAD to come out because his academic situation was so bad that it couldn't be fixed. I don't buy into rumors, but with no one being declared academically inelligible with a 1.9 team GPA yet, the rumor about Balkman's academic situation may be true. He may not have had much of a choice.

Just some interesting info on Balkman. This past fall semester, he was in my SOCY101 class and hardly ever stayed in class the entire 50 mins. One time he left after only 20 mins. Our professor shouted out after him by his last name "Balkman!" he never turned around....just kept walking.
