West Virginia loses three players
Associated Press
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- West Virginia University's football team has lost three players for failing to meet program standards off the field, said Sports Information Director Shelly Poe.
Junior backs Pernell Williams and Tyler Benoit, along with defensive lineman Chad Mayse, have left the program. Poe declined to comment further, citing privacy issues.
Williams, from Dayton, Ohio, saw action as a true freshman, rushing for 89 yards and a touchdown in his debut against Connecticut. He finished that year with 313 yards and three touchdowns.
He played in seven games as a sophomore, rushing 67 times for 206 yards and two touchdowns. During spring drills, he was tried at cornerback and then moved to tailback.
Benoit, a converted defensive back, spent spring practice at tailback but battled four players for playing time in the backfield. The Broussard, La., native rushed for 47 yards rushing on 13 carries in this year's Gold-Blue scrimmage.
Sophomore Chad Mayse was recruited from Mentor, Ohio, as a linebacker before being moved to the defensive line. He was redshirted during the 2004 season.
"It just wasn't the right place for me," Mayse said.
