I wanted to post this back in March when UF won the National Championship in basketball but I finally got around to it. I remember when the Gators won and I was thinking what a great thing for a school but I wouldn't trade our SEC Championship in Football this year for it. Nor would I trade a divisional championship for it (being that the SEC Championship game is such a special event). Nor would I trade an at large invitation to a BCS Bowl. I would trade a top 10 finish in Football for it but that is about it. Not trying to discount what you accomplished Gators but I was just showing you how much Football means to this SEC fan. What about everyone else? What football success would you trade for for a men's basketball national championship? Note: I am pretty consistent on this issue. Back in 1990, when we won the SEC in basketball (over Shaq & the boys from LSU) I did state to a fraternity brother of mine at the time "yeah that's nice but we still lost to Georgia Tech at Grant Field last Fall. I would trade this Championship for a win against the Jackets in football."

You take a national title in any sport when you can get it, especially in one of the BIG THREE (football, basketball, baseball).
And why do we have to trade?
I'll take both: NC in b-ball and the SEC in football this year.

I would take an SEC championship in football over our Back-to-Back Equestrian National Championships, LOL!

Fortunately for us Gators, our football team has won several divisional championships, several SEC Championships, and a National Championship in recent history, so winning the National Championship in basketball this year was very special. Besides the fact that it's a "true" National Championship recognized by the NCAA, unlike football, it's a tremendous honor for our University not to mention a major PR positive. I guess I can see your point, taking in to account your obvious obsession with football, but I'm a fan of my University and "any" National Champioship...esp. one from the "big 3" is better to me than a lesser honor...i.e., div. champ or SEC champ. I guess if you've never been there, you wouldn't know...

Being that I was 10 when we won the National Championship in football in 1980 and was in school in Athens when we won the College World Series in 1990 I think I do know what it is like to win one from the "big 3" :twak:

I actually have a greater respect for a basketball championship then I do for a football championship. The road to the national title in basketball is much harder imo (march madness rocks) and better reflective of who the true national champion is (versus the BS that the BCS names).

So, you're saying you would trade the NC in baseball for a div. champ. in football? If that's true, there's nothing more to say...

Point is, it's been 16 years since uga won a NC in any of the Big 3...26 years for football...been a long time since you guys were there so how could you justify a trade-off for a lesser title...you better take what you can get...

Maybe the state of Florida is so overrun with Yankee, Knick, Red Sox, etc. fans that now the other sports are on par with football...I don't know. But not here in the Peach State brother. Here in Georgia weddings aren't scheduled around a basketball game. Homecoming doesn't happen at a spring baseball game. We don't stay up late at night worrying about our depth at forward. At Rotary we don't talk about Saturday's basketball game @ Rupp Arena. Invitations aren't sent out for a baseball tailgate. However, all these things happen in Football. It is all about College Football and if I could trade glory in another sport for more glory for the boys between the hedges I would do it. I guess we will just have to agree to disagree. :stickpoke

I see your point...and beleive me, football rules in Florida as well, but at UF, we support all of our sports programs...whether it's womens golf or men's basketball. And I happen to like college basketball....hate all pro sports, though.
Would I trade the NC in basketball for a NC in football....heck yes!!! Would I trade it for anything "less"....heck no!!!!

I'll back you up on this. Football season is 12 months a year in Georgia. Some months we just play a lot less games. Georgians will discuss Dogs' football anytime anyplace, whether we are 12-0 or 0-12. You'll hear it at weddings, funerals, church, office, baseball and basketball games. It never stops.

It's a beautiful thing. What I love are homes & businesses (like many on St. Simons Island) who fly their UGA flags year-round

Most Arkansas fan including myself like football more than BBall, but it is pretty easy to see that our success under Sutton and Richardson make us more of a basketball school than football school.
