Auburn third-string quarterback Calvin Booker, a former Mays High standout, plans to transfer to Georgia Tech.
The sophomore, who didn't attempt a pass as Brandon Cox's backup at Auburn, would have to sit out the upcoming season under NCAA transfer rules. He said today he plans to attend Tech on a HOPE scholarship; the Yellow JacketsŐ football scholarships are all accounted for.
"I'm back here at home," Booker said this afternoon. "It seems like a great situation. I'll get a chance to compete."
Booker said he has spoken to Tech coach Chan Gailey only briefly, but has had extensive conversations with offensive coordinator Patrick Nix, himself a former Auburn QB.
Tech officials cannot comment on potential transfers until they enroll.
Booker went 1-for-6 for 22 yards with an interception in the Tigers' spring game. He ended spring drills No. 3 on Auburn's depth chart.
"It was a constant battle for the backup job," Booker said. "Brandon's just a year ahead of me and I didn't want to get caught up like D.J. [Shockley] did over at Georgia.
"I thought this would be better for me."
Booker said he also considered playing at Division I-AA Florida A&M, where he would have been immediately eligible, and Central Florida
