Atlanta Falcons drafted D.J. Shockley (QB Georgia) with the 223 overall pick in the NFL Draft.
I was so surprised to see Ko Simpson dropping out of the first 3 rounds. Buffalo got a very good player in the 4th round. I hope he proves everyone wrong and becomes one of the best Saftey's in the league.
Interesting to see Marcus Vick has not gotten drafted yet. I dont think he will get drafted at all. Neither has Demetrius Summers, or Moe Thompson.

It looks like many of the teams have finally learned from their past mistakes. I'm sure some of these guys might get a loose contract as a free agent, but I don't look for any of them to succeed in the pros.

Very cool. Hopefully he'll give Ron Mexico a run for his money.

I actually think it's a bad move for both the Atlanta Falcons and Shockley. He'll never get a chance to compete for even the backup job, let alone play. Mike Vick is the unquestioned starter and Matt Schaub is the unquestioned #2 man (possibly the best backup QB in the league), so the Falcons are pretty confident at QB. I wish he would have been drafted by another team so he'd at least get a chance to at least compete for a starter's job.

You are right about this. This was the worst think that could have happened to him if he has any hopes of being a qb in the NFL. This team is set and he may have to think of a position change or be content to run the scout team.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them start to work him in as a dual threat WR.
Could make for some good trick plays with him and Vick on the field together.

I wouldnt think of it as being too bad. It would have been worse had he gone undrafted in my opinion. Also, its only a matter of time before Vick gets hurt again. That could happen in the first game of the season. That being said, he would move up to the second string QB. If he can learn the offense and pick up the program quickly, he could get some playing time his second year.
Its my opinon that the Falcons have made a huge mistake in basing their entire offense around vick. The guy is great and everything, but like I said earlier, its only a matter of time before he gets hurt. Shock doesnt have Vick's athleticability, but he does have a similar style that may fit in well with Atlanta if Vick and the back up go down.

Atlanta will probably trade schaub next year, so shockley will most likely compete with b. randall for backup duties.

I agree, Schaub is not going to be in Atlanta that much longer. He is close to free agency and the Birds will probably not resign him because of salary cap worries. Also, while Schaub is a great QB his style is much different than Vick's and the offense has to shift to a totally different style when Vick goes out. DJ has a style much closer to Vick and would be a much easier transition for the offense if he came into the game.

This is not going to happen. They will not trade Schaub, he is a very good pro quarterback. If Shockley is to play in the NFL, it won't be at qb in a Falcons uniform, mark my word. The Falcons do what they have to do to showcase Vick but Shockley is no where near the run threat that Vick is so he would have to be more of a pro style qb and that want be enough to put Schaub out of a job.

Schaub is in the last year of his contract. Do you have any idea what he is being paid?

I have no idea, but it is no where near the contract Vick has. I don't see that as a problem to resign him. I don't see the falcons making another Bret Farve move.

Shockley and Atlanta are a perfect fit. Shockley with be the backup and give the Falcons a capable backup if Vick goes down. Schuab is not good at running the WCO. A good QB no doubt and potential starter somewhere else, but he's not a good fit in ATL. Shockley will surprise a lot of people. This kid has got confidence in himself now with what he did at UGA. Give a few years in the NFL and he could another Randall Cunningham IMO.

Schaub will be paid $230,000 this season. This is chicken feed compared to his talent. There are QBs with less talent being paid 3-4 times as much and even more. Schaub's talent is well known in this league as is his value. While it is true that with a new CBA, the salary cap is going to shoot up many millions, it would be very hard to imagine the Falcons matching the offers Schaub is going to be getting next year, to remain a backup QB. It is also hard to imagine that when Schaub is offered the chance to start for another team that he would be happy to remain a backup QB. He is going to be demanding a multiyear deal so that his life has some stability. Unless something happens to a QB the Falcons have invested $130 million into, I doubt they are going to match a multimillion multiyear deal for a backup no matter how great he is. The Falcons traded Farve because of Jerry Glanville's stupidity. This is not that. This will be a money issue only.

It doesn't matter what Atlanta offers Schaub. He aint' staying. In fact they will probably trade him to get something for him before he files. That leaves Bryan Randall as a back up. Randall is very smart, but IMO slightly less gifted than Shockley. The Falcons will STILL need another back up option next year.

The other thing you're right about.............Glanville's name is mud until Farve retires.

If they can pull a trade this year, hopefully it is for a great offensive lineman.

DJ Shockley playing for the Atlanta Falcons is a definite win-win situation. DJ is under no pressure to perform. Once DJ learns the system, the Falcons can easily play Shockley without changing Vick's play sequence. Make no mistake about the Falcon's number two QB, Matt Schaub, he is the pivotal player on the team. QBs rarely survive a season without injury so it's just a matter of time before Schaub starts.
The NFL is a huge jump for any athlete, but a QB needs three solid years learning the system before starting. The worst possible senario for a rookie QB would be throwing a guy in before he's matured. Not only would he'd be demoralized, but his team mates wouldn't look to him as the team leader. The only way to recover at that point is to trade the guy so he'd be back at ground zero. You need look no further than when Brett Favre was drafted by the Falcons. Favre was the most undisciplined player on the team. He was a major head case and alcoholic. He owes his career to Mike Holgrum.

Exactly Noah, DJ is a perfect fit for the Birds because of his style. Add to that the fact that he was gotten with a throw away pick and that it was a move that pleased a majority of Bird's fans and it adds up to a win-win situation. There were no DJ fans posting here expecting him to start in the near future but we are all well aware of his ability. His maturity and patience to wait and learn is what has endeared him to fans in Georgia.

I wish him the best of luck, but I don't see this win-win situation. I see him much in the same role as Woodrow Danzler from Clemson. Of course most of you guys are Georgia fans before you are Falcon fans, so I think you may be a little prejuidice in your comments.

You can bet your momma's life that we are Georgia fans before we are Falcons fans. At the same time there are two points here you are not willing to accept 1) Schaub is not going to be a Falcon for very much longer (a year or two at the most) 2) DJ has patience and is willing to wait it out. He has proved that to everyone.
He has the athletic ability to play other positions and if he can play faster that way, I'm sure he might if asked but, that does not mean he won't be a great backup to Vick which is what you are steadfastly sticking to. You as an SC fan should realize this better than anyone. That TD DJ scored against y'all last year was pure Michael Vick. In fact it outvicked Vick.

If the falcons ever want to be a championship team they will have to let Vick go. He is a tremendous athlete and a great runner, but only average at best as a passer. I think teams have learned to defend him and force him to his weakness. Matt Schaub is the proto type NFL qb and would be a better fit for them. Of course, that will never happen.

it wont happen because the Falcons have way to much money invested in Vick. he Sells more tickets than Schaub ever will. Schaub is a hell of a QB he could start for almost any NFL team and as soon as he gets that Oppurtunity he will take it. He wont be a falcon much longer because he knows he can be starter instead of a back up. as soon as he leaves for another team, Shockley will then move into the Back Up role. the Falcons wont have to change Gameplans to fit the new QB because Shockley fits perfectly into the style of play that the falcons are built around. Shockley will have 2-3 years to learn the system so when that day comes he will be ready.

Exactly, this isn't about Schaub it is about money and salary caps. They will hold onto Shaub as long as they can but, the time will come when they can't. He will be a great starter for someone but the reality is it won't be Atlanta because of the investment they have in Vick. They have to find a way to make it work with Vick. Of course the Falcons have a history of being unable to make it work with anyone but, that is a different discussion.

I hope Schaub Goes to my Panthers. he could get us over the hump and actually win a Super bowl instead of just going to one. from what ive seen from Schaub he looks like a more Gifted QB than Jake D. he could be the difference.

I just hope they trade him for somebody they need, such as another body to protect Vick, rather than end up with only a compensation pick in the draft to show for it because he is going to make someone a great QB.

Yeah, maybe they could just trade straight up. Jake, I like, but he just is not the qb the panthers need to win the super bowl.
