Here's a good article from the AJC ( did I just say that?) about Kenny Irons. He enlightens us on what a jerk Lou Holtz is! Enjoy!

Did he play for us? Oh that's right. He's the one who refused to go out and play and rode the pine for his childishness. Poor guy's still got a grudge huh.

I don't think he responded quite like Holtz wanted him to. Lou promised summers the starting position and irosn felt betrayed. Hell, even Lou's son Skip doesn't really back him up in this article.

That was a nice article. I don't recall seeing that guy's name before(Bill Sanders). Do you know if he's new or have I just not been paying attention? Maybe he will do the same story on Josh Portis. Wouldn't it be great to hear the true story on that one? As far as Holtz, I think most SC fans have now learned what most of us already knew; The guy is not only a jerk but has always been more hat than cattle and always in love with the sound of his own voice even if the words were BS. I wish Irons all the best, well except for 11/11.

this article was written just so he can get some freaking sympathy votes for the heisman.

"Poor me,I was so depressed at SC i lost 15 lbs and was thinking about bagging groceries for the rest of my life. all because coach Holtz told me i wasnt good enough and gave my spot to a freshmen. so can i have your Heisman vote to prove them i am good enough?"

and before anyone calls me out for sour grapes, let me tell you there are no sour grapes torward Irons. i like the guy and cant be mad at him for doing what is best for him. i wish him the best and hope he wins the Heisman but it amazes me what people will do to get votes.

Just because you say it, doesn't make it true. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, well you know the rest. Your post was sour grapes. I would accept anyone's version of a story before Holtz's. I am very happy for this conference that he is no longer a part of it.

I like Kenny and he sure ran for some big yardage against us last year, but I am not seeing him as a Heisman guy. First, there's McFadden, also in the SEC and likely to overshadow Irons in 2006. Second, there's the rebuilding of the Barn's OL. Can they give Irons any help? Who's the blocking fullback? Can he help? All of those things have to be just right for Kenny to have a great running season, and I don't believe they are there in sufficient quality to give him the help that he'll need.

GeauxTo, I totally agree with you about McFadden probably being the best in the conference this season. Hawgs are going to bite a few teams this year. I forgot to mention earlier that I found the following line in that story ammusing: "Georgia Tech can give his Heisman hopes a hit by upsetting the Irish in the season opener at Bobby Dodd Stadium." I guess the writer felt obligated to say that being Tech's hometown paper but it gave me a chuckle. Sure they took AU by surprise last season but that is one big reason they won't be able to do that to the Irish. News articles about Tech catching AU offguard have probably been taped up in the Irish locker room since January.

I personally don't think that KI will get the heisman because he's probably not going to get the bulk of carries like he got last year. We'll have a healthy Lester to get some carries as well. Our o-line will be fine. We will have the best guard tandem in the league, and two very talented players at the tackles. We don't really use the fullback in borges offense, so it won't really be a problem. I just don't see it happening unless every other heisman candidate has a down year. At best I see KI having 1500 yards and 15 TDs. I don't think that's gonna beat out the teams that have one offensive threat and use him repeatedly like adrian peterson, brady quinn, or troy smith.

Otherwise, we'll have to go undefeated and on every televised game he has to put up 150+ and 2 TDs. Then he might be able to win it.

I agree. I posted the article more for the Holtz thing. Lester will get many carries and that will keep KI's numbers down from Heisman level.

I don't know exactly why and when Kenny first got into Lou's dog house, but he was and he certainly didn't help himself when he refused to go into a game late. After that, he was doomed at USC. I know it was not right, and Lou Holtz was a lot of things, some bad, some good, but he was not one to give in to a player. He set Derrick Watson and refused to let him go to a bowl. I don't think all of this was Lou's fault. I hated to lose Kenny, I always thought he was a very talented running back. I wish the best for him except when he plays Carolina. Oh, as far as the Auburn game last year, Our players did more to lose the game, than KI and company did to win the game.

What do you call telling a recruit that he's the starter from day 1?

I call it the last lie Urban told Josh Porter just before getting him to sign his name on the dotted line.

let's assume urban did tell him this(huge assumption). do you honestly think josh portis is dumb enough to believe he will unseat a two year starter and preseason heisman contender before the first game is played? if he is, he has no business playing quarterback.

Going by what you have just said, he was obviously dumb either way. He was either dumb enough to believe Urban or dumb enough to sign with a coach who he knew was lying to him.

I think Lou promised him the first carry of the season, not the starting job. Demetris Summers was an unbelievable back and it just goes to show that talent alone won't get you to the top. You have got to have a small amount of intelligence and common sense. Summers had a lot of baggage when he came to Carolina and I think they hoped he could work things out. Summers was a better back than Irons at that time and maybe all this helped to make Kenny a harder worker and more determined to become the best he could be. All things happen for a reason, and hopefully he will enjoy all the benefits. Good Luck.

this is still ASSuming he even told portis he would be the starter from day one(which is ridiculous if you believe that).

you must not know portis went to more than one high school during his 10-12 grade years. you must not know his mom is the one telling the media that here son, a TRUE FRESHMAN did not get enough playing time and when he did, he didnt get to throw.

if you still know all of this and believe what you do, can we chalk it up to an undying hatred for florida or meyer? :brick:

i

I do know (and you do also) that the weekend after Utah played in the Fiesta Bowl, Urban spent the entire day at Portis' house watching NFL games with him and acting like a second father and now Portis is at Maryland. Something happened that we don't know about. I know that Shockley spent five years at UGA waiting his turn to play and did not transfer out when he easily could have played at 50 other schools. I know that DJ said one of the big reasons for him staying at UGA was that he loved and trusted his coach.

I don't see Rice winning the Heisman in 2006 first off. As long as OSU or ND win it will be one of those two's QBs this year.

Second, Irons needed that failing at SC to make him into the player he is today. At SC he came in as a big time player and he expected the big time playing time. But when Summers the local hero came in he lost that spot. Him losing his spot and suffering through the embarrassment made him work harder and brought back his passion for the game instead of his expecting gifts.
