Alabama receiver Tyrone Prothro will have a rod inserted to stabilize his broken left leg Tuesday and is optimistic that he'll be able to play next season if the procedure goes well. "It appears that way," Prothro said.

I am excited about this! Prothro for Heisman 2006!

He certainly will garner some preseason consideration if his rehab goes well.

Update the link man... no way can you compare the Larry Pitts or Greg Gamble print of "The Catch" with the Daniel Moore version. So when should I expect to receive it at my door? :D haha

If you're going to consider Protho for Heisman 2006; when he is coming back from a injury you have to definetly consider Sidney Rice for the 2006 Heisman.

Yep. I think my post title was a bit premature, huh? I am just happy to hear that he is expecting to return.

But of course we've all got to dream/hope our star players get the Heisman. :)

i'm still unsure what to think about Prothro. It's almost March, and he's just now had the rod inserted. It was a pretty nasty break, and I just don't know that he'll have enough time to really get 100%. Depending on his recovery, maybe it would actually be in his best interest to redshirt this year, take some more classes, and be 100% in '07??

Update on Surgery: Prothro's surgery to have the rod inserted was successful yesterday. Doctors and coaches think he'll be able to continue as planned on his recovery track.

I just don't see how he can rehab in such a relatively short time. Legs are everything to a receiver, and it seems like such a severe break... I don't think he'll be the same, IF he's able to play at all.

us carolina fans are hopeing for Newton to get back as soon as possible, but i think it would be in his best interest to redshirt and come back in 07'

word that i've heard is that he has permanent nerve damage and his career is likely over. I hope he can play, cause he was fun to watch, but if I were a betting man, I'd say he never takes the field in 2006. If he does play, he won't be anywhere close to what he was before the injury.

If he stays healthy, watch for Arkansas to finally have a bonafide Heisman candidate in Darren McFadden. I believe this could happen in '07 or '08!

it looked really bad since he broke both bones and it was an open fracture, where the bone pierced the skin. (btw that's why it got infected so easily) but the break was clean, meaning no tendon/ligament damage. bones heal relatively fast and i think he wants it bad enough. i don't think he'll be able to play during fall practice but he might play during the season. i don't think anyone could keep him from playing if he's healthy enough. personally i think he should take a redshirt year and make sure he's 100% before returning.

That sounds wise to me, too. That way, he could really heal and play more like the Prothro of old.
