I am currently a student at Ole Miss. As we all know, James Meredith was the first black man admitted to the college. Good for him, four soldiers died protecting him from angry white mobs..then 20 years later he called it all a mistake. Anyway, I don't mind him having come here, or the fact that we're now 14% black. But I do mind the fact that now we don't have our confederate flags at the football games, or the mascot. And to top things off, we now have a monument of James Meredith being built infront of the Lyceum.
Does anyone other than me find this offensive? If I can't fly my confederate flag or see Colonel Reb on the sidelines..why can they build a monument to slap us in the face?
I'm not a racist, I have many black friends..most agree with me.

The Confederate battle flag needed to be gone, and it's good that it is. While it's true that it was merely a flag, it has come to stand for obvious bad parts of both southern and Mississippi history. Even then, who cares if it's not in the stadium? It's on every tent in the Grove.
There is also nothing wrong with a statue of James Meredith. I don't see how that is a slap in the face? It's a pretty historical moment in Mississippi history and led to the downfall of the awful Barnett regime (in fact, I wish we'd rename the reservoir to get his worthless, racist self off of it, regardless of whether or not he commissioned it to be built.)

It was a good thing because it's a Rebel Flag and we're the Rebels.
Some of us view it as a slap in the face because they took away those things from us because of "racist meaning" then go and put up his statue.

I guess Ole Miss should just give back Meredith's books then too?

Rebel Mike,
You are a beacon of hope to all those who fear that progress is taking over in the South and driving out hatred and bigotry. :brick:

I told ya'll to not get me wrong, i'm not racist. I just feel that if we have to throw away our traditions in the name of throwing away past differences, why not just throw away something that happened 40 years ago and not build something to forever immortalize it?

Because that is a long-term positive thing. Integration of the schools is all thumbs up. Confederate slavery is :thumbsdow

I never justified slavery, nor did I ever speak poorly of integration. I have no problem with integration, I never knew things any other way. I'll tell you what, forget I said anything.

Mikey. When you negative rep me, that's okay. I consider it a badge of honor to be contravened by one as rebarbative and insensate as yourself. However, if you wish to call me names, please do it on the board, so the mods can see that you are violating the norms regarding profanity.

That, sir, would take the fun out of it. Perhaps your time in California has, unfortunately, taken away any kindness and self-respect you may have once had. I feel sorry for those stuck in yankee states. You'd realize we're both rebel fans and drop it.
