A little further info. on Lawing. He has been at North Carolina for 3 years as DL coach and recruiting coord. He has had 2 top 20 recruiting classes at North Carolina, and has recruited and coached numerous players who went pro. Included are Julian Peterson and John Abraham, who has made a pro bowl appearance. He has drastically improved the Tar Heels defense, and would be a huge addition IMO for Reaves. With Reaves youth and Lawing's experience in recruiting along with Spurrier's name, they would be a force to be contended with. Lawing was reported to be in Charleston with Spurrier on Saturday, and his daughter told some Carolina folks that he had not only accepted the job, but had actually asked for the job over the phone in the last week or two.

Hickory, N.C., native Brad Lawing enters his third season with the Tar Heel coaching staff as the defensive ends coach and recruiting coordinator.

Lawing will work specifically with the defensive ends this season after coaching both the ends and tackles the last two years. Last season, Carolina improved defensively as the season progressed and much of the credit was attributed to the play of the defensive line.

As Carolina's recruiting coordinator, Lawing helped assemble the Tar Heels' back-to-back Top 20 recruiting classes in 2003 and 2004. The 2003 signing day class was hailed by most analysts as one of the best in the country.

Lawing came to Carolina after coaching four seasons at Michigan State where he served as defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator. During his tenure, the Spartans led the Big Ten in total defense during the 1999 and 2000 regular seasons. In his first season at Michigan State, the Spartans led the Big Ten (76.2 yards per game) and ranked fifth nationally in rushing defense. Lawing also played an integral part in helping Michigan State assemble one of the nation's top 20 recruiting classes each of the last three years. The 2000 recruiting class was ranked among the nation's top 10 by several publications.

At Michigan State, Lawing was instrumental in the development of four NFL players, including All-America and first-round draft pick Julian Peterson (San Francisco 49ers, 2000), Robaire Smith (Tennessee Titans, 2000), Jace Sayler (New England Patriots, 2001) and Josh Shaw (San Francisco 49ers, 2002). Peterson was named to the 2003 Pro Bowl.

Lawing coached 10 years at South Carolina from 1989-98, where he tutored the defensive line and served as recruiting coordinator under Brad Scott. During his stint with the Gamecocks, he helped produce three NFL players in Corey Miller (New York Giants, 1991-98), Gerald Dixon (Oakland Raiders) and Henry Taylor (Miami Dolphins). He also coached three All-Southeastern Conference players, including nose tackle Eric Sullivan, tackle Henry Taylor and end Stacy Evans. His last three recruiting classes were ranked among the nation's top 25 by the scouting services. At USC, he recruited defensive end John Abraham, a 2003 Pro Bowl selection from the New York Jets.

Lawing began his college coaching career at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., where he spent one season with former Carolina head coach and current Texas head coach Mack Brown. He coached the defensive line for five years and the tight ends and offensive tackles for one season. Eight of his players earned all-conference honors, including Southern Conference Player of the Year Anthony Downs in 1987, and future NFL players Tommy Dawkins and Mike Frier. Over his final four seasons, the Mountaineers compiled a combined record of 34-12-2 (.729), including back-to-back Southern Conference championships in 1986 and 1987 and consecutive trips to the NCAA I-AA playoffs.

Lawing spent three years as an assistant coach at Havelock (N.C.) High School from 1980-82. He also coached baseball for two years, leading the team to the state finals in 1983.

A 1979 graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College, Lawing earned a master's degree from Appalachian State in 1985. He graduated from St. Stephens High School in Hickory, N.C., in 1975.

Lawing and his wife, Laura, a native of Charlotte, have a daughter, Susie, and a son, Will, who is a sophomore walk-on on the Tar Heel football team.

He was a very solid coach. I remember him well from his days at USC. Also, you may notice we get very few players from the state of N.C. He may help to increase our recruiting base to this fertile state. Todd Ellis was recruited from there if I recall correctly.

One minor correction. The coaches were in Myrtle Beach, not Charleston, at a coaching convention. It is being said that he could be announced on Monday or Tuesday, and we will certainly know for sure by Wednesday. If I can get any more information, I will let ya know!!

Just read a post from a long time friend of Brad Lawing who spoke to him this evening. He is coming to Carolina as D Line coach!!!

This is good news. Even though I associate Lawing with the Woods/Scott eras of mediocrity, I think he was a solid coach who really helped the recruiting efforts. Hopefully he still has connections in the state of SC & can work the ones he has built up elsewhere.

I'm sure SOS's glad to have this hire behind him so he can move forward now w/building up Gamecock football!

From what I am hearing he will recruit eastern North Carolina and Jacksonville. No recruiting spots open for South Carolina right now. :mellow:
