View Full Version : Cussword Filter, Where is everyone, & PMs not private

I don't think I'm alone in thinking this needs a wee bit o' tweaking. ;)

Yeah...definitely. I personally say get rid of it all together.
Since it has been implemented it has taken quite a bit away from harmless posts but I havent seen one actual cussword that it has gotten rid of. If Chris goes in and makes it so that we can say as sociate then someone can come right along and cuss with the A word again. Might as well get rid of it altogether. It feels like we're being treated like a bunch of little kids.

I wonder if there's an option when setting up the filter to exclude results that are found mid-word like as=sociate or pas=sionate or pas=s. Cuz right now, we can't even mention Spurrier's vaunted pas=sing game! I personally think it's a vain attempt by a Alabama site owner to keep us from pas=sing at all....see, RUN isn't a *cussword**cussword**cussword* and what does the Tide do best? Jordan & Chris are conspiring to keep us down, I'm tellin ya. :D
Seriously though...is there a way to 'turn off' mid-word 'hits' the filter is currently finding?
It doesn't make the site anymore Protestant Christian, so I say get rid of it......

It’s an *cussword**cussword**cussword*et to be a Gamecock and I feel it’s an honor to be *cussword**cussword**cussword*ociated with other Gamecock fans on here. We are the cl*cussword**cussword**cussword*iest sports fans in the SEC and you could say that we’re in a cl*cussword**cussword**cussword* all by ourselves. Even sop*cussword**cussword**cussword**cussword*res at South Carolina are pretty cl*cussword**cussword**cussword*y individuals!
INTERPRETATION WITHOUT THE CUSSWORDS:
It’s an as set to be a Gamecock and I feel it’s an honor to be as sociated with other Gamecock fans on here. We are the clas siest sports fans in the SEC and you could say that we’re in a cla ss all by ourselves. Even sophom ores at South Carolina are pretty clas sy individuals!
Folks, don't take this seriously. It's to show that a simple couple of sentences with no profanity can get butchered up pretty easily with this cussword filter. Just say no to cussword filter!

Okay guys/gals, I was not the one who made the decision to turn the filter on, so I am not going to turn it off. But I have tweaked the settings on this thing a bit which should have it working more appropriately now.
And please don't make plans to constantly abuse it just to see the characters pop up. :)

I don't care who made the decision, but I've not read the few widely used words being flung in an attacking manner, just in decriptive ones.
Sorta hate to be this way, but if it remains, I'll most likely revisit the decision to continue participating here. A good community of folks to post with during my time thusfar, but given the other instances of presumptive mod actions combined with this over the top childishness is more than I'll put up with.
If it must come to that, any interested in carrying on can visit me here:

The filter has become ridiculous! It just blotted out D I C K Chaney's first name in a post! In my humble opinion, this filtering C R A P is ruining our site, making it much less fun and desirable than it once was. WHOEVER is responsible needs to stop the stupidity NOW! We don't need such a filter. We're big boys and can police our site properly without censoring it into oblivion.

Sorry for my absence the last few days....
I personally don't like the fact that the filter was enabled but, like Jordan, I wasn't the one to enable it so I won't be the one to disable it.
Jordan's tweaks look pretty good however, I'm sure the system isn't perfect. If it is blocking any words that it shouldn't be, please post here and we will fix it.

I was stunned to find that when I PM'd one of my friends to tell him about ************** that the word ************** was deleted. I should be able to type ************** if I wish to. ************** is not a curseword and is not found in the pick list for any known available profanity filter.
The simple fact is that I wanted to discuss ************** with one of my friends. I did not type ************** on the open boards until now, I did it in a PM only. Given the fear that ************** seems to generate in the Mods here, I am sure that this entire message, not just the part that mentions ************** will be removed.
The truth is that ************** probably would not even exist if it weren't for the fact that censorship exists at SECTALK.
I think this problem is easily remedied, just change the name of "private messages" to "freedom messages". That is what the Bush administration does to everything when they come to a crossroads. "Freedom" makes everything so much sexier....

Yeah, a lot of people dont like the filter and are tired of hearing from the owner and some admins that we are out of control. I warned of this exact thing in the most recent suggestions thread. We lost a lot more members this time than the last time a thread like that came up. Its a shame too, this site had some great members who have moved on :(

Hopefully, just like the silly "reps crisis" of a few months ago, this will blow over and they will turn off that stupid thing.
I was talking about a great recruiting class the other day in a post and it ended up making no sense at all, because class has the word "ass" in it. It ended up as "great recruiting cl**cussword***cussword**". If that thing isn't gone already, even I may join them and for what? It's among the most inane things of which I have ever seen or heard of.

sooner or later, I'm going to start a thread. All I need is an interesting topic. But only on SEC football.
Sure, I feign interest in basketball and baseball, but there is no substitute for college football. If you've ever paused to make a choice between 1)watching the end of the Arizona State/Oregon game on TBS at 1:00am and 2)accepting the invite to bed from your half-naked & horny wife....well, then you know what I'm talking about.
I, for one, am not going to worry about this filter. I don't like it, but it's there. Big deal. I'm a grown man. And I say that with the full knowledge that I wear lucky underwear on gameday thinking that will help my team win.
(That does help, right?)

honestly, the only football game i've been to in the last 4 years is the Liberty bowl(louisville/boise 2 years ago). i cant deal with the hassle, parking, walking, getting drunk, trying to leave, etc etc etc, not to mention there arent really any teams around here that i care to pay good money to see. i did see miss state beat florida in starkville a few years back and that was one of the worst days of being a florida fan i've ever experienced(the other was the nebraska beat down).
my game days are spent at the house where i can watch ALL the games. we usually start around 10 smoking a butt, ribs or something of that nature and it is hard to cook outside without a cocktail in one hand. like one of my friends says, "this is an activity that can be done with cocktail in hand."
auburn fans beware, i fully intend to come to the plains this year to see the uf game. one of my friends just moved there so that takes some of the hassle out of everything.

Actually, my maroonic friend, none of the folks who have gotten upset about this are testerone-filled. A few are testosterone-filled.
Likewise, none are potty-mouthed. It is the fact that censoring was taken on by one or two folks, when the community had shown little tolerance for low-class, scatological posts. Intervention was not necessary.
There are still many fine posters on this board who are more tolerant of the infantilizing, patronizing approach of the moderators. I envy them as I am not as mature or centered. I generally enjoy my time here, but the persistent and insistent nudging by moderators who seldom post except to scold is aggravating to say the least.
As far as acting like gentlemen, it is quite over-rated.

Nice! Only one problem, momma don't teach manners any more and Gentlemen are near extinct. Just take a look around, it obvious.
The women's rights/women's lib movement destroyed that 30 something years ago, and now they want it back? You can't have your cake and eat it too!!

But it seems lately the Staff here feels like they have to get involved and have group discussions, about things. yeah, that and the fact that people dont realize that we are censored in ways every single day, but we dont just walk out on everything.
can you go into your place of work or school and just start shouting anything you want? yes, you can but there will likely be consequences for your actions(i.e. termination, suspension, whatever the case), just as there are consequences on this board(the filter). that is censorship.
can you call a policeman a dumbass because he pulled you over? yes you can, but there will be consequences. that is censorship.
these are both direct violations of freedom of speech, yet we abide by these rules everyday. why, b/c we respect the people around us enough to not do these things. i dont see why it should be any different here.
these places we are censored, more often than not, are public places.
this is all censorship we live with every day yet people think they should be able to come onto a PRIVATELY owned site and say whatever they want to?
i dont get it.

newsbot, filter and now censoring the name of other websites
its just not fun here anymore

Its not so much the filter as it is just the principle of it. The owner goes and asks us to recruit for the site and then we have to hear that our actions are making it so that people dont want to post here. Things were going fine but it seemed like every few months or so a thread would pop up talking about how the users were getting out of control, when really everything was going fine. It gets old after a while.
I'll still be on here but the traffic flow has slowed greatly, and picked up greatly at the "censored" site.

02-18-2006, 02:13 PM
yeah, that and the fact that people dont realize that we are censored in ways every single day, but we dont just walk out on everything.
can you go into your place of work or school and just start shouting anything you want? yes, you can but there will likely be consequences for your actions(i.e. termination, suspension, whatever the case), just as there are consequences on this board(the filter). that is censorship.
can you call a policeman a dumbass because he pulled you over? yes you can, but there will be consequences. that is censorship.
these are both direct violations of freedom of speech, yet we abide by these rules everyday. why, b/c we respect the people around us enough to not do these things. i dont see why it should be any different here.
these places we are censored, more often than not, are public places.
this is all censorship we live with every day yet people think they should be able to come onto a PRIVATELY owned site and say whatever they want to?
i dont get it.
The thing is...people usually don't want to go shout anything they want at work or in a lecture. Why? Because for the most part people are mature. If you get pulled over for something and call the police officer a dumbass, it really doesn't matter because you are more than likely getting a ticket anyway...the dumbass comment would just destroy any hope of a warning (kind of stupid).
You can say what you want but the majority of people have moved on to another website. I just haven't made the full transition yet, like many. It will happen soon enough. The funny thing is...the people who don't know about it are the reason people left.

the reason people are leaving isnt because they cant cuss its because just when this site was rolling strong the mods decided to exert their control and proceed to treat us all like we are 12
but my personal breaking point was the last "tell me whats wrong" thread chris ran there were hundreds of responses telling him precisely what was wrong and after all was said and done chris said tough...I like it this way and then we got the newsbot and the filter
what i dont believe chris gets is what works on his computer geek forum probably wont work on a site designed for rabid southern sports fans

I am confused about all this talk about the "lack of posting". Quite honestly, after the football season ended (which is THE biggest reason most of us participate), and after the conclusion of recruiting, I expected the amount of posting to drop. It is completely predictable and expected IMHO.
We shouldn't be surprised by what could reasonably be anticipated. We are kind of in a "DEAD ZONE" as far as sports are concerned. February is just a boring sports month....especially for hard core pigskin fans.
However, after the recruitment effort to get more people to this board, I was pleasantly pleased with the number of postings that were getting every day. It has just been in the last week, that postings have seemed to drop, but it's the freaking middle of February. There's NOTHING sports-related to be excited about right now.
Now, all of a sudden, we've got a bunch of people talking about jumping ship because the wind has died down. When the wind dies, then you paddle, you don't jump out of the boat. We seem to have a lot of "reactionaries" on this site. If you are a reactionary, then I challenge you to be bigger than the "problem" that you percieve to be in the middle of. Row the boat!

I imagine that people who want to leave in favor of another site more in line with their philosophy should be free to do so without admonishments from others to "grow up." I assure you that my time here is quite limited and I also assure you that I am quite grown. Chris has said many times himself, if you don't like the rules, then you are free to go. Many of us have elected to do just that. We have as much right to do that as you have to stay. Try not to criticize us and we'll try to extend you the same courtesy.

For me personally, I am just sick of deciding NOT to post a reply to a certain topic for fear of overly offending certain people. It's getting to be more common than not that I find myself doing that and I've NEVER been torn like that before. No, I don't cuss on a frequent basis (i do have two kids <5 years old) and it's not a matter of "growing up"..it's a matter of comparing what this site is now to what it was when I first joined. Sadly, it isn't even close to the same place.
I'll still pop in from time to time, I'm sure...but I really think a long break is just what I need and the posters that have kept me here for as long as I have are elsewhere.....so, I will be elsewhere too.
It's with a fair amount of regret that I do this....no, the regret is that I feel i need do it all. :(
dyp everyone...peace

I am sorry that a good many (almost all) of the main standbys have decided to leave; I am in hopes that this thing will blow over and everyone will return. Now that the filter has been tweaked and SEEMS to be working, I don't see that it's such a big deal, anyway. Although, as long as it is not overdone, an occasional curseword is very effective and should be allowed.
Other than that though, I don't see the big deal. If someone's feelings are hurt by an effective post, then tough for them. Perhaps they were deserving of the hurt feelings or perhaps need a thicker skin. It's all a part of growing up.
I for one am not going to give up on this place yet, although if neesy, C4ever, fernando, uscreb, Beeds, superG and a few others are not going to be here at all, then I may have to visit them on the other site, because I have grown to have special feelings and a certain comraderie with them.
As for the newsbots, if you don't cotton to them, ignore them. They probably won't be around long if you do, although, again, I don't see that they are such a problem. And if someone treats you like you are 12 years old, just ignore them and keep posting. Really, as long as we are not personally attacking someone or cussing up a storm, which none of us do anyway, there shouldn't be a problem.
Really, I am having a hard time understanding why anyone is leaving for "greener pastures" when what's on this side of the fence is certainly an effective forum for any idea that I want to get across.

I am turning off the filter. I don't like it either. I would like to think that people can type a post without cussing?
I personally cuss like a sailor in person, but it takes ZERO effort not to type a cuss word. What's the point anyway?
In all honesty, if you don't like to talk without cussing on a public, free site, you are welcome to go check out one of the sites that allow this sort of behavior.

Djshockley, you have my permission to leave if you don't like it....
In fact, I will give you the links to sites that you can check out....
http://www.secfanatics.com - Site with a decent posting amount and they may allow the type conversation you are looking for.
http://www.secrivals.com - Good site too, I think they run it similar to here though.
http://www.secillustrated.com - A site created from a merger of people that were here and didn't like the way I run it and another guy that has a vision. From what I see, a perfect fit for those that don't like it here for censorship reasons.
If anyone want to take off, let me know and I will remove your account if you want me to. If you are happy here, you are more than welcome to stick around. For those that don't like our "censorship", its not gonna change, so deal with it or move on.

I care, but if people are unhappy with the rules... there is no reason to hide the fact that there is a site out there that they can enjoy.
I have full faith that the site will continue to grow without certain members. One thing I learned in the Navy was that everyone is replacable. The site might suffer from some leaving initially, but it will pick up.
One thing to note, there has been an increase in registrations the last week here.
On another issue, Newsbot. I had no idea that so many did not like it, its been disabled. If you have an issue that's not related to the rules or complaining because you can't say "bad words", feel free to PM or email me. I won't mind.

Not interested in selling, I've turned down $5k and $700 over the last 3 months. One thing about this site is that it costs me NOTHING to run it. Its not generating any income really either. I have no reason to "charge" a VIP member fee nor do I have to go pimp the site full of ads. It is supported on 3 server paid for 10x over by my other sites.
Eventually, there will be enough members here that can communicate in an online forum that do not have to cuss, troll, or degrade other to have an effective conversation about SEC Sports.
Ill buy this domain from you. Name your price.

The first two don't have nearly enough traffic. The last is pretty much the same people that are here, except they have younger moderators (avg. age of 19). I prefer to have some kind of rules, and don't really feal comfortable having a 15 year old moderating me. (no offense to young people, as I am 20 myself, but I think there has to be some regulation and i like that we have a wide range of members here)

FYI. I have banned several ex-members of this site for utilizing this site as a vehicle to recruit for another site. Thanks for the PMs to let me know this was happening. Maybe that's why one of my staff members censored the word. The members I banned left the site, so should not be a big deal anyhow.
I am trusting the words of a senior member, so if I got anyone by mistake, use the contact form.
I don't mind the migration of some members to another site, but spamming this site is not acceptable.

For the record, before I decided to try out the censorship filter, I made this comment.
I have never used the built in filters for a couple reasons.
#1. I trust members to act civilized as most of us should be adults and mature enough to follow the rules.
#2. All my other sites have too much going on to bog it down with extra database queries. This site is slower, so I may just do it.

It was me that added "secillustrated" to the now-disabled filter. I had had a sneaking suspicion that a lot of the "transition" members were using our site to promote the other one.
I banned the name because it was being used to spam people here. As Chris mentioned, I've seen the words "boycott" and "revolt" so I know that people weren't sending a "friendly" invite to the other site.
If I offended anyone, I'm sorry, but we don't allow spamming here.
