Panthers could be backup plan
<Feb. 10> While Alexander expects to remain in Seattle, the Panthers may be his second choice, the Charlotte Observer reports. Carolina's coaching staff is coaching him and the NFC squad at the Pro Bowl. League tampering rules forbid the Panthers from talking about possible interest in potential free agents, but Alexander said he's impressed with the Panthers coaches.
"Those guys are awesome," he said. "It's fun and there's a family atmosphere. They keep it close and you can tell why they do good things together.''
Alexander was Seattle's franchise player last season and, according to the terms of his contract, can't be franchised again. If he doesn't sign a new contract with Seattle before March 3, he can become an unrestricted free agent and likely would be the hottest property on the market.
"The most important thing to me is just fair. When everybody is fair, no one holds anything back," Alexander told the Seattle-Post Intelligencer just hours before departing to Honolulu for the Pro Bowl.
"It's one of those things where if you're trying to get a deal, then usually somebody has to sacrifice something. I don't think that we're in the situation where we don't have to be fair. We definitely can do everything correctly where everybody wins."
Alexander led the NFL in rushing this season with 1,880 yards and set a season touchdown record with 28. His 236 rushing yards were the most in the playoffs.

It very very unlikely that Alexander will be a Panther. Not only because he loves Seattle, but the Panthers can not afford him. They are extremely tight on the salary cap.

Man, I'd love to see Shaun come back over to the East coast.

From everything I've heard & read, the Panthers are looking at RB free agents TJ Duckett & Chester Taylor.
I'm sure it's more wishful thinking than anything but I've heard a lot of growing-louder whispers about the Lions being among those who'll be in on the Shaun Alexander sweepstakes. They just hired Mike Martz as their offensive coordinator and Kevin Jones' shoulder is in much worse shape than anyone realizes which is why they held him out of games that were already decided. But like I said, I think this is wishful thinking as the Lions have more needs than RB at the moment...their O-Line is as bad as the Texans. no exaggeration.
Edgerrin James, Jamal Lewis, Chester Taylor, Ahman Green, DeShaun Foster, Travis Henry, Michael Bennett....there are a ton of halfway decent to solid running backs out there this year and at this point...pre-draft i mean...it's anyone's guess where any of them will end up. The draft will go a long way in determining who's going to be after what when it comes to RB's.

Jamal Lewis is a thug and a quitter, good luck to whatever dumdass team that is willing to pay for this guy. Foster is good but just cannot stay healthy, Henry is a drug addict and done, James is an elite back, Bennett is solid, Green must prove that he is healthy again, Taylor is serviceable.

Bennett is not solid. The guy sucks period. He didnt do crap in Minnesota. He was a back to Mewelde Moore. I'll take Foster over Bennett ANY DAY.

Bennett's problem is durability, plain & simple. I don't think he's spent a month in the NFL without battling an ankle, hamstring, knee...the list goes on. For a guy who's main attribute is world-class speed, it's no wonder he hasn't done jack. I think the turf in Minnesota has something to do with that & I don't think he'd be a bad gamble for a team with natural grass or field turf...anything but astroturf.
Having said that, I agree wholeheartedly that DeShaun Foster is FAR better than Bennett, healthy or otherwise. Foster's durability is about as sound as Bennett's though, if not worse.

He'd be foolish to leave, but he very well might. Seahawk fans love "Sweet Home Alexander," and he does deserve a big payday, but I don't think he's gonna get what he wants, from us or from anyone. Without the Seahawks line, his numbers will go way down. The thing I'm worried about is that when the Seahawks don't offer him a deal to top Clinton Portis's, and they won't nor will anybody else, that he'll take it personally and leave just cuz. That would be a lose/lose. There's folks out here that are so confident in our line, they think andybody could get Shaun's numbers. Well that's just plain wrong. But you can take a really good back and make him a great back. e.g. # 37. Please don't go Shaun.

Denver does that consistently. They can afford to get rid of one of their top backs(like Portis)in exchange for a player to fill one of their needs and not have to worry about the backfield. Im sure that Seattle fans want Alexander to stay, but I wouldnt worry about it too much as long as they keep the line intact. As long as you guys have a somewhat decent back they will be able to do more than enough behind that line to open up the way for the pa ssing game and pick up some great numbers on the ground along the way.

God that would be freakin sweet if Shaun came to play for my Panthers. That's all I've got to say on the matter. ;)

And how many playoff games have they won since '99 with this attitude?

I personally would love to see Shaun head to Dallas or New Orleans. Those have always been my teams which would make it easier for me to keep up with him since I don't care for the Seahawks. We all know New Orleans would never happen and Dallas is also a stretch although if he went Cowboy's fans would all but forget the name Emmitt Smith. ;)

Last time I checked New Orleans still had Deuce McAllister. He is one of the top backs in the league. He was injured last year and he should have a solid year this year. This is no way New Orleans is thinking about having Alexander or is Alexander thinking about going to New Orleans.

Dallas has Julius Jones and just drafted Marion Barber III in last year's draft. While they're no Shaun Alexander, the Cowboys aren't exactly in the market for a RB either. New Orleans still has Deuce McAllister & even though he's coming off an ACL tear, he's still a top 15 back and they're more in need of a franchise QB than a RB one.

How effective has their running game been with that attitude??

exactly. The reason they have been losing playoff games is because of their QB play and not their RB play. Their running has been solid every year.

Im probally the biggest Homer around and for that I think SA is great but to be Honest.......Now Im not saying he isnt a good back because we all know he is, but SA would be nowhere near as good without the seattle line.
There I said it, hes a good back anywhere but in Seattle he is one of the best! Dont look for him to break any records behind a different line.

If Shaun Alexander were to sign with the Panthers, he'd still get his yards. Maybe not 1,800+ yards like he got with the Seahawks this season, but he'd still get plenty. Remember, Stephen Davis got 1,444 in 2003. SA could've had more had he been the feature back, IMHO.
I'm not sure DeShaun Foster can stay healthy enough for the Panthers to offer him a contract like he wants. Its all just talk right now, and a crap shoot whenever you do sign one.

We re-signed him. good thing Paul Allen has deep pockets. $64 million over 8 years w/ $15 million guaranteed in the 1st year. We were able to keep the O-line together too. Look out Miami 2007! As long as the NFL approves the contract.
