that we have a shot at jimmy clausen? If we really ARE a contender, wich it obviously seems, it gives us something to talk about until he does sign. I say he does the things that a guy who is interested does, ie junior day, but when it comes time to picking up the pen and signing the loi, no way he choses usc. we just arent there yet. Its notre dame or so cal.

Oh, he is going to USC alright. The one on the left coast!

Clausen told a coach from Richland Northeast last weekend at Tennessee's Junior Day that it is a solid tie for first between Notre Dame and South Carolina. Keep in mind that Charlie Weis just signed two 4-star QBs. Clausen, Mark Barnes (WR from RNE) and Gary Gray (CB from RNE, who may start off as the #1 CB prospect in the country) have started a good friendship and communicate regularly. They want to go to the same school, and I would say right now that we are leading for both of the RNE boys. Barnes came to every Carolina home game last year, and they both really really like the Gamecocks.
Don't let the trend of this year fool you. We are very much in the hunt for all three of these guys, and we are in the lead if not tied for the lead with all of them. The good news is that they all want to commit early, from what I remember hearing.

The word out here is that he is the number one target for next year. There are rumors that Sanchez can and will beat out JD Booty in the Spring. (A friend of mine has a video of Sanchez kneeling down with both knees on the goal line, tossing one pass after another at targets 65 yards down field!)
If Sanchez does win the job (And Leinhardt won it from heir apparent Cassel) then Clausen red shirts, does one year of backup and the team is his.
This is gonna be one he|| of a recruiting battle and it is more likely to be UFL, TEX, ND, and USCal bidding for his services...not USCar.

I have heard the same info concerning Sanchez and agree with your assessment. When it comes to recruiting, I will take Pete Carroll over SOS.

Or you could just say that you'd take LA over Columbia. I think that has more to with it.

umm, UFL? why the hell would he go to UFL? this kid has been taking the recruiting business very seriously for over a year now. i don't doubt that SoCal and ND are ahead of us for his services, but I am not concerned about Texas and Florida, who have already signed their QBs of the future this season.
i don't think we get Claussen or any of his cohorts, but i think we'll be in serious consideration up until he cuts the list to two, maybe three.
i would be really surprised if he didn't go to ND.

There is some validity to your statement Beeds but Carroll loves recruiting and Spurrier loathes it. RTR

UT helped themselves by adding Rick as a graduate assistant. I think that we will be solidly in the race for Jimmy too.

I don't blame him. Can you imagine going out and groveling to some snot-nosed 17 year old for a year or more? I can't.

I think the reason for hiring Rick is pretty transparent. BUT...I would NEVER go to a school just because my brother went there or works there. Not ever family has close sibling relationships. And even if they do, there is often a streak of independence between siblings that will force each of them to establish their own identity.
I'm sure UT hired Rick to help with lil bro...but I don't think that will be a difference maker.

spurrier doesn't loathe recruiting. have you ever known of a coach to speak his mind more openly? and spurrier always says that he has no idea where that idea came from. the man works like crazy on his recruiting classes here at USC. he doesn't suck up to the 17 yr olds as much as most coaches do, i guess maybe that's where the idea comes from. bottom line....if he hates recruiting, then i hope every coach we have in the future hates it as much as he does.
and i agree fernando, Tennessee will be in the race as well for Claussen. I see no reason why his top 5 would significantly change over the next year, considering all the work and travelling he's already put into this decision.
Tenn., Michigan, Carolina, SoCal, and the Golden Domers....and I think that'll end up being the order from worst to first.
and now i must stop procrastinating and study for the love of god!

How do you know what a kid that young is going to do? At any rate, Jimmy and his talented teammates were in Knoxville this past weekend which must have been turturous considering how badly Jimmy hates it.
His sister is also a student there. Remember, I didn't say that we were going to get him, only that we will likely be a factor in his recruitment at some point. Just my opinion.

your points are valid and i was aware of all that, thanks...bottom line is this..tennessee had casey and rick...a threefer is almost nil

The order right now has SC and ND tied for first with SoCal 3rd. That's from his mouth. The people who aren't giving Carolina a chance with him are probably the same people who didn't give Carolina a chance at landing SOS.
We are tied for first, and we have been forbidden from contacting him for over two months. That's a dern good sign in itself.

if we do sign Clausen next year, wich i hope we do, we will more than likely have our first QB contraversy in a long time. I honestly believe Smelley is going to be a great QB for us in the near Future. i would bring clausen in just for the guys he will bring with him, not from just his team but from all over the country. our class next season could be just like Floridas this season if we get Clausen. and it will shut any Spurrier doubters up for a long time. i think we have a very good shot at him and an even better shot when we get to talk to him again.

I really feel like Clausen is going to Notre Dame. A cocky guy like Clausen (all of them for that matter) doesn't really care how many 4* and 5* guys you have in front of him....he thinks he's better.....and as a top athlete, he should. I don't think ND signing two quarterbacks this season will affect his decision that much. I think USCal is in the hunt for pretty much any player they want....they have sooooo much to offer. Granted, I wouldn't go there if you paid me, but if I was a blue-chip athlete from a small town in Louisiana, Alabama, or Mississippi with dreams of going to the NFL....I'd definitely listen to anything Carroll had to say. I also think that Tennessee will be number 3 on Clausen's list.....all the ties he has to the school will definitely weigh heavily on his decision....to think it will have no effect simply because his two brothers have already gone there and "threefers" don't happen is just ridiculous.

Our no-contact with Clausen penalty ends today if I'm not mistaken. Let the smoozing begin.
Who here doesn't give a crap about clausen coming to SC considering we have a coach who could turn my mother into all-SEC performer? Seriously, do we need clausen? No, we need WR's, OL's, and good defensive players, I think we're fine at QB for the next 4-5 years, we just need the other pieces if we are ever gonna get an SEC title....

Matt Lentz is a name for you Gamecock fans to remember for QB recruiting next year. He's going into his senior year at Greenville high. He'll obviously be the number 2 QB in the state because of Willy Korn but this kid is a gunslinger. I've seen this kid play and I walked away impressed.
