Spurrier raids Georgia and Alabama for recruits
USC signs as many Peach State residents as South Carolinians
By JOSEPH PERSONStaff Writer
USC signed as many Georgia residents as in-state players this year.
The Gamecocks’ seven South Carolinians included only five high school seniors. Spartanburg athlete Mychal Belcher was greyshirted last year and counts toward the 2006 class, while Marion defensive lineman Joel Reaves transferred from Georgia Military in January.
USC coach Steve Spurrier hopes to sign more in-state players next year from what is expected to be a deeper talent pool.
Spurrier did not think the departure of recruiting coordinator Rick Stockstill to Middle Tennessee hurt USC.
“But one or two guys might have come with him. You never know,” Spurrier said of Stockstill, a longtime Clemson and USC assistant with extensive recruiting contacts in the state.
Bailey update. Offensive lineman Clarence Bailey, who signed with USC in December out of Lackawanna (Pa.) Community College, said Wednesday that he needs to finish two online courses through BYU before he can enroll in USC’s eight-week program at Fort Jackson in March.
The 6-6, 308-pound Bailey expects to participate in spring practice. “It’s real frustrating,” Bailey said from Trenton, N.J. “I want to get down there as soon as possible.”
Sweet home Alabama. The four Alabama players USC signed were an all-time high for Spurrier, who could not resist giving the Crimson Tide a jab.
“They used to always visit Florida and then they’d end up going to Alabama,” he said. “Of course, we found out later they were giving away a little bit more valuable scholarships than we were. They don’t do that anymore.”
Odds and ends. Spurrier hopes to fill the vacancy on his defensive staff within the next 10 days. He will not assign titles or duties among the assistants until he makes the hire. ...
With Jonathan Hannah transferring to N.C. State, redshirt freshman receiver Jared Cook will move to tight end this spring. ...
Former USC player Grayson Mullins, whose scholarship was revoked by Spurrier during the summer, transferred to Presbyterian.
