Replace Spurrier with Saban and a "kitty" with the Gator and you have you guys a year ago...oh yea...we beat Iowa.

Good pic though...although, I would say Florida has went from "frozen" to on fire!

Even though the Zooker years were somewhat dark...UF did manage to hand LSU a loss during their MNC year...always a silver lining;).

My cousin took this picture in the parking lot during halftime of the less-U/UF game in 2003.

Looks like a tigger booster tried to leave the game a little early....

That's freakin' hilarious....I remember at one point during the game...think it was 19-0 and UF had just picked off a pass....QB Matt was looking to the sideline at Saban and shrugged his shoulders...Saban looked like he had just seen a ghost!

Funny thing is, GoTo is trying to have a little laugh...I'm sure he is just "funnin"...but when you think about it....Saban left LSU one year removed from a MNC...they had huge recruiting classes and, until UF signs their current class, was considered to have the most overall talent in the SEC...the sky was the limit if Saban stays...these guys could have won a couple of more SEC champ...and who knows, maybe another MNC....but he left them...sure, they picked up the pieces...won 10 games...but with all the talk about Meyer...has Lesslie proved anything? I mean, I could coach that team to 10 wins.

...as for UF, SOS had won one SEC title in 5 years...he completely laid an egg in 2001 with a UF team considered by most of us as one of the best to ever take the field...not saying I was glad to see him go, but in hindsight...I'm happy with how things have turned out.

Things could easily change in the future, but after CRUSHING Miami in the Peach Bowl LSU is alright in my book ;)

Well....it certainly hasnt helped recruiting. Also, I will ALWAYS pull for SC. I wont always pull for LSU, but when they CRUSH one of my least favorite teams(which also happens to be from the ACC) in a bowl game then I will pull for them. SC Im stuck with no matter what happens ;)

Just comparing SOS's last few seasons to Sabans...never said he was a loser and did say I hated to lose him...but in hindsight...maybe we're better off.

And to lose 2 games...with that 2001 team...showed that SOS needed a break.

You know, there's a fine line (and a lot of luck/bad luck) between winning and losing. I don't have any records near, but as I recall, those losses were narrow were they not?

Yeah, but SOS's 45-3 loss to UT in 1990 probably would have provoked the same "his offense can't work in the SEC" crap we're hearing these days, too....

Not really...I'm the one that though UF would be lucky to go 9-3 this year...I suspected 8-4. :D

The point was that SOS had his "best" offensive team in 2001...and a pretty good defense ta boot. Yet, he loses to a mediocre Auburn team with a freshman QB and loses to UT at the SWAMP! Then, UT is beaten in the SEC CG by LSU...a team that UF had beaten...in Baton Rouge 44-15! SOS won 6 SEC Champ. his first 7 years at UF...and won 1 his last 5...I think that SOS was getting tired of all the hoopla that surrounds being the HBC in Gainesville and his coaching performance showed it. I think he has rekindled that fire now that he is at USC.

And yes...we expect to play for SEC Champ. at UF in the future and all UF fans believe Meyer is the guy to get us there...if he goes 3-4 years without at least getting us there...he'll be in trouble, too.

Spurrier said there's one big difference in his recruiting situation at South Carolina and the one he had at Florida.

"This year we're going to sign some kids from Alabama," said Spurrier, who has landed four players from the state, including safety Darian Stewart, who committed last week. "In 12 years at Florida, I don't think we ever signed a kid from the state of Alabama."

He started to leave it at that, but he just couldn't resist.

"Of course, we found out later that the scholarships they were giving out at Alabama were worth a whole lot more than ours," he said.

Evil Genius remains blue-chip quipster

By TONY BARNHART

Steve Spurrier has always been amused with the hype over recruiting.

"The year we got Brock Berlin and all those guys, everybody said we
had the No. 1 class in the country," Spurrier said of his next-to-last
recruiting class at Florida. "Four years later, hardly any of them
were still there.

"I've just always felt that what counts is what they do after you sign
them — not before."

Spurrier, recruiting his second class at South Carolina, has always
enjoyed poking fun at opponents who claim victory on national signing
day but come up short on game day.

He was at Duke when Mack Brown became head coach at North Carolina in
1988, then earned rave reviews as he dominated the state in
recruiting. But Spurrier's Blue Devils beat Brown's Tar Heels in 1988
(35-29) and '89 (41-0), the last one capping an ACC championship season.

In the summer of '91, Spurrier read an article in a Georgia fan
magazine claiming the Bulldogs had recruited better than anybody in
the SEC under Ray Goff. Florida, Spurrier said, was ranked No. 5.
After beating Georgia 45-13 in Jacksonville a few months later,
Spurrier uttered the words that still live in infamy for Georgia fans:

"How is it when Georgia signs people, they get the 'best' players, but
when we play, we've got the best players? Georgia has signed a lot of
good players. Something just happens to them at Georgia, I guess."

Spurrier was 11-1 against Georgia in 12 years at Florida.

He loved tormenting Tennessee's Phillip Fulmer, who would bring in one
nationally ranked recruiting class after another. Spurrier was 7-3
against Fulmer. Tennessee's prize recruit, Peyton Manning, was 0-4
against the Evil Genius.

Spurrier's critics said he pooh-poohed recruiting because it was hard
work at a time when he would rather be playing golf. They said his ego
wouldn't allow him to grovel before an 18-year-old.

"If somebody is looking for something negative to say, I guess they
can find it," said Spurrier, who left Florida after the 2001 season
and spent two seasons with the Washington Redskins. "Last time I
looked, we had a bunch of pretty good players on NFL rosters. We must
have done something right."

In 2005, there were 37 former Gators on NFL rosters. Only Florida
State had more with 42. Of that total, 33 were recruited to Florida by
Spurrier and his staff.

"Oh, we got our fair share of guys," Spurrier said. "When I look back,
though, I can say that FSU probably outrecruited us. It seemed like
they got two out of three guys if both of us really wanted them."

At South Carolina, Spurrier appears to have a much tougher job when it
comes to recruiting. He's in a smaller state with considerably fewer
Division I-A prospects.

Spurrier, however, insists he's going about the job of recruiting no
differently than when he was the head Gator.

"Oh, we've got a list like everyone else does," said Spurrier, whose
class is ranked between No. 30 and 33 by recruiting services with a
week and a half to go until signing day. "We're selling the ability to
play early more than I did down at Florida. We're not loaded right
now. If they come here, there is not going to be a whole lot of guys
they have to beat out."

Spurrier said there's one big difference in his recruiting situation
at South Carolina and the one he had at Florida.

"This year we're going to sign some kids from Alabama," said Spurrier,
who has landed four players from the state, including safety Darian
Stewart, who committed last week. "In 12 years at Florida, I don't
think we ever signed a kid from the state of Alabama."

He started to leave it at that, but he just couldn't resist.

"Of course, we found out later that the scholarships they were giving
out at Alabama were worth a whole lot more than ours," he said.

No it doesn't. Albert Means didn't contribute much to the 99 team. I'm sure that's what you are referring to, right?
6-4 is a great record against Alabama. Absolutely. But curious enough he is 1-3 against Dubose and Shula, one loss a nail biter in Gainesville, the other two blowouts.
I'll graciously bow out now before this thread turns into another NCAA vs Alabama argument. Spurrier is a great coach with a big mouth. He asks for and deserves every lick he takes when he gets beat. RTR!

I like your enthusiastic pizazz, GH! However, it may be a bigger issue than you think. The SEC Championship will likely pass thru LSU, Auburn, Alabama, and (maybe) Arkansas and Ole Miss the next few years, the Western teams that you'll have to contend with, even if you win the East (which is likely). However, it makes for outstanding, mouth-watering football in the SEC!

"We're selling the ability to play early more than I did down at Florida. We're not loaded right now. If they come here, there is not going to be a whole lot of guys they have to beat out."

I hadn't seen it yet, so I appreciate woffordcock for posting it. Some of us are to lazy to search the boards for these things and need to have them given to us on a silver platter.

He doesn't need to out recruit you. All he needs to do is out coach you, and he's already shown he can do that. :D

recruiting gets you good players, but if they arn'[t used, what good are they. texas for like the past 4 years has been #1 in recruiting, and they won , what, 1 MNC in that time? i know they did win "one" but they won it because of a soft big 12, they had no competition besides Ok. State(if you can call that competition), oklahoma was down, nebraska was down, texas tech was the best they played, and their passing attack relies on the receivers catching the ball, not a good QB.

i do think meyer is a better coach than brown is, but we arn't going to just let florida step onto the field and forfeit each and every game, thats why we play them. just as an example this year, florida was supposed to beat alabama(badly i might add), they were supposed to beat south carolina, they were supposed to beat mississippi state last year

recruits are great, buts it making sure they are 100% weekin and week out AND prepared for the other team. back to the alabama game again, if you counted every star player on each team as the score, florida wouldve won by a landslide.

the thing is with football, no matter how much recruiting you can do, you can only put 11 of them on the field at once

Recruiting is only a part of a much larger equation. If I were South Carolina I would be feeling pretty good right now. UF I'm not so sure about. They are "outrecruiting everybody" but I just don't see that option crap working out. I also find it refreshing that an Crimson Terd fan uses the term MNC. Strong emphasis should be placed on the M.

So, by your logic, recruiting doesn't matter? You know that Meyer is a better coach than Brown? You base your recruiting judgement on the UF team that Bama whipped this past year?

Sorry, but, getting the best players leads to wins...even Zooker knew that...he sucked as a coach, but knew he could rely on talent to win 7-8 games a year...point is...USC has actually had higher classes than Texas the past 3-4 years and look what they've done...point is, I agree, until a player steps onto the field, it's impossible to tell how much "college" talent they'll have....but saying that is a reason not to pursue the best HS players in the nation is a bit naive.

LOL!! Last sentence was hilarious.

That "option crap" whipped the piss out of UGA in the Sugar Bowl and USC...everybody is so quick to judge Meyer's offense based on his first year with players that are not suited to run it...give him another year or so...with the players he has recruited that fit his scheme.

Hell, the players that he recruited fit my scheme. He should look like a genius even if his scheme is so-so. I am not saying that the gators are going to start dominating the SEC, but they are likely to be good on offense even if Leak was drawing up plays in the dirt.

I'm just ready to see Meyer's offense with players that are suited to run it. I don't think we'll see this until Leak graduates, though.

no recruiting does matter, but just because you have good streaks in recruiting doesn't mean you are always going to be @ the top.

i mentioned alabama because FL, by just about everyone's opinion, had more talent than we did, but they still lost the game, meaning that recruiting is just that, recruiting, it doesn't automatically mean you will win your games, you still have to come and play each week.

i do agree that getting the best talent leads to wins, but once again, doesn't guarantee them. im going to take a guess its going to be @ least 2007 before meyer begins to get his offense rolling, it wont be this year. the SEC is full of good recruits at just about every school, and most of them have coaches that can use that talent. in other conferences, outrecruiting might as well be the equivalent to wins for the season, but with the quality of coaching here, mediocre "talent" can become the best players.

not all great high school players are good in college, just like all college players aren't good in the NFL.

if you really want to compare recruiting, someone go find records for 2years ago, then compare the recruiting rankings with actual final rankings for today. im sure there will be a few differences in the rankings, which is why the games are played

Couldn't agree more with everything you said.

As far as "people" believing that UF would spank Bama...I wasn't one of them...despite what folks thought...Zooker left us in pretty bad shape as far as depth...UF only had 6 more scholarship players than Bama...not too mention it was the first major road test for a 1st year coach. Looking forward to seeing you guys in the Swamp this year.

UF dominated when they had Spurrier and Miami was down. They still did fairly well when they had Spurrier and Miami was on the comeback. They took another step back when Spurrier left. Spurrier is good, but not the only reason UF is no longer in mid 90's form.

Zook left:

2 scholarship LB...one was a true freshman..
2 scholarship cornerbacks....only 1 had ever started...
3 wr...one of which broke his leg vs UT...

Zook had only signed one DL in 2 years...thankfully, our DL was young and didn't get hurt...

As you can see...UF had players...just no back-ups...that's why Meyer is signing several WR...4 LB....4 OL and 4-5 DBs.

UF had 74 players on scholarship last year....Bama had 68.
