View Full Version : Trojans Had A One-Pete

Leading up to the Rose Rose there was a lot of talk about USC and a three-peat. After the game, ESPN could not deny that in the last three years LSU earned one crystal football, USC earned one, and Texas earned one as well. If the glass ball is the symbol for the mythical national championship, then the Southern Cal Trojans had a one-Pete...

Time for the LSU fans to quite whining about this. If you will not recognize USC'S AP National Championship then cease to credit the tiger program with its' '58 title. RTR

Not whining, just reporting the obvious ESPN bias.

Ha-Ha-Ha And if we don't recognize USC's AP NC, then I guess that eliminates all 12 of Bama's! Kinda puts a gap in your "heritage."

I can barely recognize myself in the mirror...let alone who is granting championships to whom.

I'm with you on this one Geaux. This one has frosted me for months. As I stated in the Rose Bowl Thread, they only have one crystal trophy, but you would never know that to listen to the media hype. It was almost as if the BCSCG that LSU won didn't even exist.

What I found particularly curious is that the Rose Bowl WAS the BCS Championship Game. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but most organizations don't tout someone else's organization that may be in competition with their own (i.e., you won't hear Proctor and Gamble singing the praises of Kimberly Clark. They are competitors) But here was the BCSCG previewing the game and announcing the game as the "three-peat" effort of SoCal. But SoCal didn't win the BCSCG two years ago. So, in effect, the BCS announcers themselves were discounting their own product from two years ago in recognizing the AP vote for SoCal. It just makes no sense to me except for the fact that the media was in love with SoCal.

As for SG's comment about LSU giving up their claim to a championship that was voted on....all of those were PRE-BCS. Once the BCS came onto the scene, there was a legitmate, if not always perfect, system in place to attempt to determine a champion. Before the BCS, no such system existed. We only had polls and they could go either way, but that was the system. With the advent of the BCS, the winner of the BCS rightfully claims the title.

Anyway, that's why I'm so glad that the University of Vince Young won the game and put an end to all that garbage.

Where in the world did any say they were going for their 3rd BCS title? Had they won they would have bee the AP National Champion for 03, 04, and 05. WHich is a 3-pete. the BCS is, like the AP, not recognised by the NCAA and it carries no more weight than the AP.

Therefore you are only wrong if you say that the trojans where going for there 3rd straight BCS title or that they were trying for their second national title in a row.

This just in; Due to the overwhelming response from Southern College Football Fans, all polls other than the BCS, which this said group was trashing this time last year, will cease to exist. Furthermore the Bible will be replaced as will the gospel, by the BCS Poll. Talks are also in the works to have the Electoral College replaced by the BCS as well. RTR

In the fall of 1997 the six major conferences and the NCAA got together and decided that the national champion would crowned in the BCS title game. It's not a great system but it has been decided by all parties that that is how a national champion is crowned. USC didn't win the BCS championship in 2003. LSU did. Thus USC's "national title" of 2003 means about as much to me as Auburn's from last year.

You've got to remember that since the early days of college football champions, there have been multiple recognized bodies that rank the teams. The BCS is just another one of these, and is no more officially recognized by the NCAA than the AP or any other body.

The Trojans were going for a three-peat AP championship and a two-peat BCS championship. Until polls are taken out of the process, there will never be a single deciding body for national champions. If we choose not to recognize the AP now, then we might as well go back the past however many decades and take away everybody's national championships that were ever awarded by the AP.

But the AP welshed on the deal. They had a written contract that they would also crown the BCS champ as their national champ. They changed the rules in the middle of the game.

Yep, Beeds is right, LSU, Texas, and SoCal have each won 1 national title in the past 3 years. Get over it bama fans, it doesn't concern you anyways.....

And it concerns cock fans? Good luck on reaching that 8 win plateau. Too bad most of the free world sees it differently. RTR

I'm actually ready for the electoral college to be eliminated, I believe even Iraq doesn't have one, b/c it takes away from democracy. Thank God we had it in 2000 (President Al Gore??), but seriously, if more ppl vote for a guy than another guy, the guy with the most votes needs to win, anything different is communist, fascist, and un-American (seriously)......., and I think with us getting Wofford next year we'll reach the 8 win plateau, and congrats on being a bandwagon jumper for SoCal, that's creative........

Whoo whoo, everyone jump on the ESPN conspiracy train. RW will be your conductor for the next century.

God forbid SG might have been a USC fan prior to Carroll being the coach out there during their not-so-great years.

You do not know me well enough to suggest that I am "bandwagon jumper". I do like watching USC play for they are entertaining and one rarely hears of any off the field trouble coming from South Central. That said, I would take the same position on the polls no matter what teams were involved. Well maybe not the barn but that is a story for another time. :D RTR

In my opinion, the AP threw a tantrum when their #1 wasn't one of the top 2 in the 2003 BCS Formula. So they took their poll and went home.

Spin = SoCal three-peat
