According to a USC source, ESPN is looking at the possibility of opening the 2006 season with the USC at Mississippi State game in late August. The game would be scheduled for a Thursday night. According to the source the talks are farther along than just prelimenary meetings.
Me: This is a great idea IMO. I really hope this comes to fruition.

I welcome the opportunity for the Gamecocks to open the season on national television. This sounds like a great thing, and I hope it happens. The only bad thing is that I probably won't be able to go now. As a student, it would be hard to miss three days of classes that early in the semester. However, I do have a history of missing classes when it comes to Carolina athletics. I wouldn't mind having an SEC win under our belts heading into the Georgia game.

Interesting, UGA is always our conference opener or it has been lately. Would they be changing the date of the MSU game to make this happen? Gotta love a nationally spotlighted game.

If it happens, it will likely be the last thursday in August. It would be the first college football game of next season.

Thanks for the welcome, Spurrierismyhomeboy. SeattleGamecocks, you are correct in saying Georgia is usually our first conference game. Don't forget that we did open up with Vandy two years ago. I liked that. I really prefer playing a conference game before we play Georgia, especially with Mississippi State looking as if they will be crippled by their probation for a long while.
