The last two games were like drinking the last two sips of what was a good cup of coffee: cold and bitter.
But,
all in all, I am very happy. Our problems were with depth. We had great horses, just not enough of them to fill the voids when someone got dinged up, had their bell rung, or twisted an ankle. 2005 provided a knot-hole for us to look into the future. We were blessed to have a winning season and a bowl team as a part of the foundation to what Spurrier is building in Columbia. Our recruiting class this year is looking good with linemen and Spurrier will steal a few who previously committed elsewhere. There will be some surprises before February 1, and we will all be excited come spring and summer.
2006 will be an exciting season, but it still be a year of construction. We may exceed expections like we did last year, but the championships will come later. When they do come, there will be many of them.
We will be fine at quarterback next year. If Blake holds onto the job, he will do a super job because he will be pushed hard by Thompson and Smelley. If one of them beats him, then all the better.
We are stocking a stable full of receivers, RB's and DB's. The key will be our lines. When we have some depth there, we will be able to take on all comers.
2006 will wipe the bitter taste of these last two games and we will look back at 2005 as the year when things really started brewing at USC.
