FROM ASRN Rick Shaffer(spelling?)

MEANWHILE it is a quiet period for football. In a dead period coaches may call each prospect once per week but may not have face-to-face contact. Recruits, on the other hand, may call coaches all they want.

New Arkansas offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn and quarterback Mitch Mustain have connected. An in-home visit with head coach Houston Nutt, Malzahn and perhaps another assistant or two will be set up soon.

Mustain isn’t playing his cards but it still appears to be between Arkansas and Notre Dame for his signature Feb. 1. Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina have been mentioned but are long shots at best.

Malzahn’s presence on Arkansas’ staff is no guarantee for luring Mustain but their relationship is very good and could be the difference if Mustain leans back to the Razorbacks. The Hogs are still pursuing Mustain’s Springdale teammates, Damian Williams and Ben Cleveland, even though they are committed to Florida. Neither will say it but there is still a sense that Mustain and Williams would like to be college teammates. The only place that is possible is Arkansas.

The dead period ends at midnight Jan. 2. There are four days of recruiting before another dead week occurs during the annual NCAA coaching convention. The last two weeks of January is when recruiting peaks.

With Alex Mortensen considering but not yet committed to transferring, it has become evident to Arkansas’ staff that pursuit of another quarterback is mandatory. Now the Hogs will offer scholarships to other quarterbacks and will take one whether Mustain says yes or not.

While Arkansas will be improved next year regardless, the next month will be critical to the long term success of the program. Hog fans hate being patient in the pursuit of Mustain but right now that is the best stance to take.

Hopefully it will all work out. Although I must add, Rick is a great guy and I appreciate his positive attitude about all things Razorbacks. But he will give good news or put a positive spin on anything. I hope that Mitch does become a Razorback asap! Woo Pig Sooie!

Then you must really dislike ND, to have him pick an opposing SEC team over an Independant league. Thanks none the less!

I know your comment was in response to a comment WayzUp made, but I would much rather the quality recruits pick SEC teams rather than other conference teams, even those recruits that choose not to play at SC. It improves the SEC and the image the SEC has nationally when the SEC gets the top players. However, I would much rather a recruit choose an SEC team that we don't face as often (e.g., choosing a team like Alabama instead of Tennessee or Arkansas, who we face every year).

ND has Catholic prep school pipelines pumping recruits their way every year, an NBC deal that pays them $9 MILLION A YEAR for the trouble of being guaranteed a national audience for every home game regardless if they're 2-9 or 9-2, the unique ability to be allowed to participate (and thus share revenue) in conferences in sports they're not being subsidized by a national network for and a fanbase consisting of fair-weather fans who cry at every call that doesn't go their wayz.

So no, it's nothing against Arkansas or any other SEC school...I just hope Mustain doesn't sell out to play for the Irish cuz ND sold out a long time ago when it comes to playing on a level playing field.

Every other school has to EARN time on national television by improving to their standing in their conference so the network with their conference's games will pick their game over the rest. ND doesn't have to worry about that.....and how do you think that would sound to any recruit who thinks it'd be pretty cool to have all his friends and family see every game he plays in because NBC & Notre Dame have that deal? No one's been able to explain to me how it was ever allowed to begin with, much less extended through 2010.

/end rant
