FROM ASRN Rick Shaffer(spelling?)
MEANWHILE it is a quiet period for football. In a dead period coaches may call each prospect once per week but may not have face-to-face contact. Recruits, on the other hand, may call coaches all they want.
New Arkansas offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn and quarterback Mitch Mustain have connected. An in-home visit with head coach Houston Nutt, Malzahn and perhaps another assistant or two will be set up soon.
Mustain isn’t playing his cards but it still appears to be between Arkansas and Notre Dame for his signature Feb. 1. Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina have been mentioned but are long shots at best.
Malzahn’s presence on Arkansas’ staff is no guarantee for luring Mustain but their relationship is very good and could be the difference if Mustain leans back to the Razorbacks. The Hogs are still pursuing Mustain’s Springdale teammates, Damian Williams and Ben Cleveland, even though they are committed to Florida. Neither will say it but there is still a sense that Mustain and Williams would like to be college teammates. The only place that is possible is Arkansas.
The dead period ends at midnight Jan. 2. There are four days of recruiting before another dead week occurs during the annual NCAA coaching convention. The last two weeks of January is when recruiting peaks.
With Alex Mortensen considering but not yet committed to transferring, it has become evident to Arkansas’ staff that pursuit of another quarterback is mandatory. Now the Hogs will offer scholarships to other quarterbacks and will take one whether Mustain says yes or not.
While Arkansas will be improved next year regardless, the next month will be critical to the long term success of the program. Hog fans hate being patient in the pursuit of Mustain but right now that is the best stance to take.
