I'm sure all of you are familar with acne. The disease that harasses millions of teens all over the country and is a b!tch to get rid of. My nephew has it bad and can't seem to get rid of it. He has tried the highly acclaimed Proactiv Solution. It helped for a little while but eventually it came back with a vengeance. He then tried its competitor AcneFree but got the exact same results. I feel sorry for him and all kids who have it. Nobody deserves it. I had it when I was his age and some scars still remain on my neck. It is a nightmare to anybody with any kind of big social life. Do any of you have an acne story and perhaps a suggestion I could pass along to him. Does anybody know of any other medications he could use that are supposed to be very good.
Thanks. ;)

go see a dermatologist. They provide a lot of medicines that can get rid of acne. I didn't have too bad of a case, but they prescribed minocycline.

How long did you have it?
My case was a bad one. Mine got started when I was 12 and lasted until I was almost 18!
He is only 15 and I would hate for him to have to go through it that long.
I had it bad all of a sudden at age 15 and I went to a dermatologist. I was prescribed minocycline also, and as long as you take it everyday it's a miracle drug. I was almost acne free in about 4 months (although getting sun helped). Don't play around with the stupid creams and topical chit, he needs to get rid of the stuff from the inside. Take AuTiger's advice and tell him to go to the dermatologist and get minocycline prescribed....
I went off the medicine for a year when I was 19 and it never came back on my face, but then I was getting it on my shoulders (which is painful) and upper back so I've been on it again now for 3 years as a preventative and it's pretty effective......

His parents even went as far as ordering some kind of herb mixture from a Seminole indian dude down in south Alabama. He said it was some kind of cure. He was an Indian medicine man that treated all kinds of things from acne all the way up to cancer. It seemed to help but it never quite did away with it.

I would just try to curb my diet from eating greasy foods, acne just seems to run its course until it's done and there isn't much you can do about it. Although if I ever have any facial blemishes I use this stuff called "zapzyte", don't know if it works for acne but I swear by it in everyday application.
Not to argue or mess with bamafan0001, but eating any food (chocolate, pizza, grease, etc.) has absolutely nothing to do with acne, about the same as masturbating does as far as putting hair on your palms. Now, working around grease and not washing your hands and face daily will spread grease and cause the pores (sp?) to be clogged or whatever. That other stuff is just old wive's tale. Seriously, save this kid some embarrassment and self-loathing, and forget the drunk Indian, the wives tales, and topical creams, and get a 1 time visit with a dermatologist who will take all of 5 minutes to solve the kid's problem. Almost all types of acne today can be eliminated or at least significantly reduced....

Yea just go get him to a dermatologist for minocycline and whatever other drug he/she will prescribe. It will involve a blood test that will require two or three vials of blood to be drawn.
Blood to be drawn? I never had that happen.....

Finally a question about skincare! I feel right at home now, lol. I actually didn't have severe acne as a teen, although I had my share. RW has given great advice. I work with many teens and find that many of them make the same crucial mistakes when it comes to getting rid of acne. First of all, they do not wash their faces reguarly and when they do, they use a harsh soap that dries the skin. Secondly, they use those horrible over the counter acne creams which dry the skin out even further. Finally, most of these teens do not moisturize. A good oil-free moisturizer will help keep the face moisturized and reduce the need for excessive oil production. FYI, if anyone has questions about women or children.... well, I'm the resident female!

1. A point for me for being right . 2. We need to have a weekly column done by sportsgirl on female things, it'll add a different dimension to the website....

I've had like 7 zits my whole life. My brother's got it bad and he's 27. It just won't go away. He gets it on his neck and back and stuff. He's been dealing with it for nearly 15 years now. I don't know what's up with that. I guess some people just get it worse than others.

Acne is one of those disease conditions that has several causal factors. Some folks seem biologically predisposed, others develop hormonal changes either through normal maturation or trauma, and still others experience acne as a result of the side effects of medicines...particularly those that contain steriods.
Because of this, people respond differentially to medical treatment. Likewise, because maturational changes in hormones sometimes "cause" acne, it will sometimes "go away" as you age. This is not always the case. One of my best friends is in her late forties and anytime she stops her meds, the acne returns. The good news is that the majority of cases, acne does "go away" eventually with the proper course of medication.
Yep, the medication is the key, not any other nonsense treatment. Acne is not good to have, not just from a visual/vanity standpoint, my dermatologist said it can cause other problems and infections...

After many failed remedies, my dermatologist prescribed me Accutane when I was about 16. It worked like a charm. On a cheaper note, tell your boy to wash with Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash, then use Proactive directly after., but always, ALWAYS use the Proactive repairing lotion. That is the key ingredient.

Although I certainly make myself available to dispense womanly wisdom, I suspect if the men here wanted to hear more about female things, they'd step away from SEC Talk and go back to their wives and girlfriends. I imagine this is one of the few places where many of you feel you can come and not have to hear about anything female! Because my husband spends so much of his time here, I wanted to see what is so great about all of you... I have yet to make a final determination about the lot of you, but I am enjoying the sometimes intelligent conversation and all the girly drama that takes place. So far, I'll say talking with you guys has been an experience akin to a Philosophy 101 class and the bus rides I took as a high school cheerleader with the football team. You can imagine the stimulating conversation that takes place pre-game with a bunch of teens with raging horomones. I think I'll stick around for awhile and see what else unfolds in the land of SEC Talk. As far as anything female, all ya gotta do is ask ;)

I had horrible Acne when I was a teenager. My parents took me to a dermatologist and all of my acne cleared up within a few months. He gave me something that smelled like sulfur but I don't know what it was called. Bottom line - go see a dermatologist.

I would have to ditto this advice strongly. I never had it bad myself at all but I do know a couple friends of mine who did & they went to one and they had many things to try; they'll eventually find one that works.
Also, sister-in-law goes to a dermatologist and she broke out bad during her recent pregnancy but one trip to her dermatologist pretty much took care of it. Like, in one to two days....aren't hormonal imbalances the cause of puberty acne too?
