Who makes the decision on which posts are not fit for human consumption? A couple of days ago, I posted a link to a graphic that contained relatively highly charged policitical humor. It garnered a few responses from some on the board. I took my lumps from friends who disagree with me. We moved on....or so I thought.

This morning I went looking for the post, so that I could copy the URL for another board and it was gone. I spent a good deal of time looking for it, just to be sure that I was not having a "senior moment."

There are tons of posts on this board with which I disagree. Some I find downright offensive. I have always, however, been guided by the belief that opinions, no matter what their form, must be respected atleast to the extent that they can be expressed.

As one of the few "liberals" on the board, I occasionally engage those of you who sit to my right. I have never asked that an opinion be struck or censored or recanted. Most often, I simply read the opinion and move on.

What I find most ironic is that the latest focus of conservative diatribe has focussed on the issue of Merry Xmas vs. Happy Holidays. It seems that there are those who feel that both their freedom of expression and their cultural roots are threatened which their speech is controlled. I waded into this discussion because I actually have sympathies with folks on both sides of the argument. Ultimately, I feel you have the right to insult and pi$$ me off and I will fight for your freedom to annoy me. I am sure that most of you will be happy with what I am going to say next.

I will be taking some time off of the board to reflect on my concerns. I may not, in fact, return. I am not sure. I think had anyone reached out directly to me about the post and engaged me, I would feel differently about this. I understand that this is not my board and I respect the owners' rights to remove my posts. My frustration is about this being done without informing me.

I have truely enjoyed the time that I have spent posting here over the past few months. Checking the board is one of the first things that I do in the morning and on of the last things that I do at night. In fact, because I am on the west coast, I am often the person who puts the list to bed. I have endured flames, because I often provoke them. I have read many posts with which I disagree, because I had developed respect for a particular poster. I felt a certain kind of trust with many people on the board.

Perhaps I will return in a couple of days...although I am not feeling that is what I wish to do at this time. I was really looking forward basketball season with you guys.

Adios. Via con Dios.

Come on Reb, quitters never win. If the post you are referring to was the one in which you called all southerner's "dumbf@#%'s", then I can understand why it was removed. Don't leave us though, the board won't be the same without you.

I saw the thread and did not take offense to it. I'm not sure why it was removed, but I see no reason that it should have been. It was purely a political joke which should not have been offensive to anyone IMO. People may not have agreed with it, but it should not have been offensive. I would be curious which admin removed it and why?

As far as leaving uscrebel, I, for one, hope you stay (and I am sure I speak for the majority on this board).

Reb, I didn't like the picture but recognized its humor. I too am sad to see your thread removed, especially without a courtesy notice from whoever is capable of such actions. As for time off, I've been there before. Sometimes it's fun, other times annoying to argue or debate about such trival things with complete strangers in total anonymity. Anyway, Godspeed until we meet again...

I second this post. What he said and I'm curious too. I saw the thread myself and I thought it was pretty damn funny. There've been at least as politically inclinded cartoons posted by Geaux here on a weekly basis and none of those are missing, i'd bet. They're nothing worth censoring one of the best & funniest poster on the entire board, are they? I sometimes disagree with just about everyone here at one point or another but to take that opinion and delete it? WTF is that all about?

Was this over that list he posted the other day, about conservatives or something? Give me a break, are part of the rules now that you have to agree with the Republican party to be on this board? I know neesy and beeds (the independent) can abide by that, but I'm not a huge fan, and I'm sure there are SEC fans who aren't republicans (you know, educated people...), oh well, it's not my business, but we just lost the smartest person on this board (sorry GN, rebels not ivy league but he's good)........, I know he's my favorite....

This is a shame. I don't remember anything USCREB ever said that was disrespectful and I can't remember viewing the cartoon in question. Could it be that bad? i havent been here long, but i have seen some things removed that i thought were unnecessary. seems as every time someone gets into a spat, it gets moved. i understand the thought process behind it, but i also would expect that members here are mature enough to: 1: make amends and call off the dogs, or 2: ignore each other.

if someone or something upsets you, avoid it. it is easy to do and please remember, our most effective form of censorship is SELF censorship.

i think the people on this board deserve a little more respect than to think we cant get past day to day arguments(small argumenst in the whole scheme of things) and continue to add substance and informed thoughts(or uninformed thoughts, who cares) to this board.

I for one hope that you stay uscrebel. Im sure that many others feel the same way. It sucks that your post was taken down and it sucks even more that you werent confronted about it. Kinda like instead of coming to you and saying they had a problem with it they just went and told the teacher like they did in school. I didnt even get a chance to read the thread even though Im sure I would've liked it. I'll be the first to say that I fully support freedom of speech. I may not like it when someone says that all gay people should move to Canada and make it a land of "queers and steers" but I still think they should be able to say that if thats how they feel and then I'll respond openly. Im not gonna go whining to an admin like a little B*+(# with a skinned knee. I hope that you dont let the thin-skinned whiner keep the rest of us from enjoying your posts.

Here is my dilemma. I have to figure out a way to get back on the board without feeling like a complete wienie. I mean, I knew that my "farewell" post would provoke a few people...I intended it as such or I would not have posted it. We all do things like that. I suspected that there were a couple of folks who would PM and offer moral support. I was actually stunned at how many of you did.

I also knew a few of you would simply leave comments within the thread. Thanks.

The feeling like a wienie part has to do with having a tantrum in the morning and then crawling back in the afternoon. So, after the first PM or two, I decided that I would wait until tomorrow...there's actually a "behind the music" story that has to do with a shouting match between me and my DSL provider, my new cable modem, and my ingrate Bruin son returning from UCLA...I'll save it for later.

I also don't want to act like I was all ready to throw you guys overboard, but I was talked into coming back and am doing it as a favor. He!!, I frickin' enjoy this place. About twenty minutes after sending the dang thing I considered lurking under my son's IP address. As silly and maudlin as this may sound, the board is usually a good place to be, often a great place to be, and only rarely a pain in the arse. Had you not prevail on me, I would have slinked back undercover of darkness and pretended it never happened.

Here's the deal. I am both flattered and ashamed. I appreciate the kind words, but embarassed that my sulking invoked it. I will probably be scarce until mid-day tomorrow...the cable modem thing. There are two final things.

1. To the Mods or Admins. I really don't care if you delete my posts, but I would appreciate it if you would give me a bit of warning or explanation. If something I put up offends someone...have them PM me or encourage them to discuss it rationally in the post.

2. To the board members. I don't want any of this to be interpreted as my being upset that someone disagreed with me or dissed me. Some of my favorite folks on here (and you know who you are) disagree with me on a regular basis and have often made fun of me. It is one of the things I like about the board.

Hell, if I left there wouldn't be anybody to take care of Beedsie Boy and God knows he needs it!

I thought it was funny. Sometimes I think rebel can be a doo bag, and that has the tendency to rub some people the wrong way. On the flip side, he is right in what he says a lot of the time and this in no exception. Whoever deleted that post should not have, he did explicitly say that it contained some edgey material and forewarned those who might not want to see it.

I think this all comes down to the majority of the people on this board not liking the message rather than the content. Whoever deleted it should own up to it and appologize like a proverbial conservative "MAN".

'Twas me who removed that thread.

Someone (I forget who) reported the post and I didn't care too much for the language it. We normally try to PM the poster and let them know that it was removed and why, but I was in a hurry and I honestly forgot to send the PM when I got back.

As I said, the thread was removed because of the language in the image. I have no problem with political jokes (heck, I laughed at that pic when I saw it). I just didn't think that the language was appropriate here.

There have been a lot of other links that led to sites with bad language. If that is what offended the person then I dont see why the other links didnt offend them as well. Also, I think if a warning is given then if the person is easily offended they shouldnt click on the link. I can understand that there are rules to follow on here but really uscrebel didnt use any bad language in his thread and even gave a warning. This site already has pretty strict rules as far as content in posts but if we're gonna go around trying to make sure that no one gets their feelings hurt(even if a warning is given) then its gonna get even worse as far as freedom is concerned on here.

I have to admit, that statement is a bit shocking. You make it sound like there are tons of things we can't say on these boards. As far as I know, unless the subject matter is excessively extreme and/or graphic, the only issues revolving around posting content involve overt, bad language and "ad hominem" attacks.

Then why was an anti-republican link squashed? Sorry, but pointing out faults of these geniuses is not extreme....

I don't know because I didn't see the thread, but there must have been something about it....it couldn't have been merely the political content.

I remember some truly horrible Al-queda pictures posted on this site a few months ago, I'm guessing, by an insurgent/Iraqi sympathizer....I mean, for those who didn't see it, we're talking full-blown, horribly graphic, anti-USA war propaganda. As horrific as those pictures were, they were certainly a political statement. Should we have left them up, in the spirit of full disclosure, regardless of who they offended? What if the poster had been a U.S. citizen from some farm in Iowa? Hmmm.....

From gauging a good portion of the political climate on these boards, one might assume that a genuine spirit of "acceptance" would dictate tolerance of even these types of things. I don't believe that to be the case, but I think we'd all admit there are limits to these things.

Now, I'm not equating liberalism with terrorism, nothing close to it; rather, I am suggesting that there is a limitation on the types of things that should be tolerated, on acceptable topics and their presentation, IMO. Many of us cry complete tolerance until something crosses the line. And that's fine....as long as we admit there is a line to be crossed.

WOW...I am absolutely floored and pretty p*ssed about this. But, then again, this is simply reflective of how our society works these days.
First off, USCREBEL is (IMO) one of the few REALLY classy and informed posters on this board. Admittedly, I agree with 99% of his posts, so perhaps his posts are more easily swallowed because of this, but I can't EVER remember a disparaging word ever uttered by him in any of his responses, even where he strongly opposed the viewpoints of another.
Now, I certainly did not see the post in question, but I refuse to believe that it was in any way more offensive than some of the other garbage that's allowed to be posted in this site. Gay bashing, soft porn (IE BoD), and offensive language (as long as you bleep out the vowels) are acceptable, but some how his post was MORE offensive than all of that??? Frankly, I don't buy it for a second!!
Respectfully, DUDEMAN, that's a weeeeek excuse. Props for ponying up and admitting it, but I would suggest that if the post in question was in the nature of something that you personally strongly agreed with, it would still be posted. If your actions were truly benine and you felt like you had to react to the one lone complaint/offended person, again shame on you. If you are to "sanitize" every thread/post to insure that it wasn't offensive, this would be a VERY small and VERY boring web-site!! But alas, that IS the road this country seems to be heading down.
Finally, USCREBEL, you better stay....You jump, I jump!!! You are one of the few "voices of reason" on here. Have a Merry Christmas!! (Hope that wasn't too offensive.....

I MISS this guy!!!

Well, 1 forum is my limit!! I tried, but I'm too comfortable here!!

Anyway, I apologize in advance if this thread brings back any hard feelings....that was NOT my intent. I honestly didn't read past the initial post before posting my reply!! Oops!! Alot of missing veterans and current veterans in this thread, though!!

I have to admit, that statement is a bit shocking. You make it sound like there are tons of things we can't say on these boards. As far as I know, unless the subject matter is excessively extreme and/or graphic, the only issues revolving around posting content involve overt, bad language and "ad hominem" attacks.

geez nation, are you freakin tellin me that I can't have at the "ad hominems"? I hate those bastards and feel the need to attack them every now and then.....can you change your mind on that?

This board has seen better days. RTR

Not you again. You are a true enigma. You're a Bama fan, which in my eyes is a very good thing, yet you are a complete AH. You are the reason I left that other board and came back here. Life is too short to waste my time on any board you are connected with.

The title of this thread should be "vaya con dios"....not via.
