ok, maybe you guys will get Tebow :( but what does that say about urban meyer's tactics as far as recruiting goes? portis followed him from utah. or is this the case of an 18 year old who's sulking cause he doesn't get what he wants.

Interesting. I remember when Portis was a high schooler out here. Apparently, he sulked then because USC made him an offer, but wanted him to play in the secondary somewhere. I don't think that UCLA even offered him a schollie.
Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that he is a bad player. I am saying that, like many kids, he asked for a guarantee about position. Meyer gave him that.

in sec recruiting the last thing a team needs is fodder on the street for other coaches to use against them

it is what it is. the backup qb is leaving b/c he didnt play this year and knows he wont play next year. happens every year all over the country. i do personally think it is kind of shatty to leave the team b/f the season is over. that is quitting, not transferring.

what bugs me is that he knew chris leak was a junior coming into the season. he knew he would have had to wait 2 years to get a chance to start. so after one season he's transferring?

Probably has a lot to do with the recruiting of Tebow. If UM is sweatin' Tebow the way he is, maybe Portis knows that he is going to be a back-up again. Who knows

yeah, i dont know the details so i wont pass judgement. i wish he would finish the season, though. if leak gets hurt in the bowl game, portis will have let a lot of his teammates down.

He sounds like he's only worried about himself. He's clearly afraid of competition. If he were as good as he and his momma think he is, why can't he stick it out and win the starting role?

yeah, to be honest, if he is afraid of the incoming competition, good riddance. no team wants a qb that isnt confident in himself. unconfident quarterback=bad quarterback.

I think this has more to do with Brent Shaeffer than Tebow honestly.
How many freshmen come in and start at QB right away, especially when there is a 3 year starter with excellent numbers about to make a run for his senior season.
I believe Schaeffer is the a-typical QB for Meyer's system and Portis doesn't want to be third string.

you may be right, but schaeffer hasnt committed yet. it would be funny(not really funny at all) if neither schaeffer nor tebow went to florida, then portis' ass is stuck as the second string qb at grambling all b/c he jumped the gun and didnt wait for the cards to fall.
it really wouldnt be funny.

It's actually his mother that is pushing for a transfer...he knew with Leak there that he would ride the pine for 2 years...and Meyer didn't approach Portis when he came to UF, Portis came to Meyer. His mother also made him transfer after his junior year of HS...he was the starter....she's definately trying to get herself a meal ticket it seems. I thought if TT was to commit to UF, Portis would end up at WR...he is 6'4" and runs like an antelope. But, if this is the kind of player he is, we don't need him. Besides, the only reason he hasn't gotten more PT is because he fumbles everytime he runs it....as stated by Meyer.

That and he doesn't knwo the offense. He just comes in to run the ball.
Portis' mom is the reason he's leaving, but you have to love our chances for Tebow even more now. Whatever "playing time" Shula may have been promising, he's got nothing on TT being a true-freshman backup. And if he shows considerable progress, maybe TT could take over next season.
childhood team....
family times....
family alumni...
no QBs on the roster except Leak....
If he goes to bama, there should be an investigation.

Yeah, whatever...
As for Portis, turns out mommy wasn't happy that her son wasn't getting enough playing time. The final straw was not leaving the sideline during UF's 34-7 blowout of f$u. But, from some of the comments she made, it sure sounds like she doesn't really know what was happening. Here's the crucial excerpt (from GB):
________
Portis, whom Rivals.com rated the fourth best dual-threat quarterback prospect in the nation after throwing for 2,293 yards and rushing for 865 in his senior year of high school, committed to Utah last year before following coach Urban Meyer to UF. After going through spring practice, he emerged as UF's No. 2 quarterback and earned more playing time at the position than most true freshmen.
He played the entire second half against Kentucky and received spot duty against Wyoming, Louisiana Tech, Alabama, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt. He rushed 29 times for the 163 yards, the fourth-highest total on the team, and completed 6 of 11 passes.
"People are thinking he can only run, but that's not true," Patricia Portis said. "The majority of plays he got were option runs. Can he throw? Yes, he can throw. But they didn't allow him. They did in the Orange and Blue Game. What drastically happened after the Orange and Blue Game?"
Portis was 20 for 30 for 253 yards with four touchdown passes in the spring game, but the defense was limited to basic coverage and was not allowed to blitz. He drew Meyer's ire for a lack of ball security during the season, fumbling twice against Kentucky (losing one) and throwing an interception against Mississippi State.
________
One pick on only 11 attempts with two fumbles (and one lost)...??! Those aren't stats that endorse lots of playing time. If Portis comes in during the third quarter of the f$u game (when it was only 17-0) and turns it over, maybe free-shoes gets back in it and makes it a game. Add to which, Leak needs as much time in this system as he can get. Splitting time with Portis will only hurt next year's offense. I'm usually all about playing your backups--because NOT doing so will lead you to Bob Stoops' situation this year: 30-year-starter White left a huge void that Rhombar couldn't possibly fill--but Leak needs as many game reps as possible.
I think Mommy is overreacting, a bit clueless, and a bit too protective/controlling. Anyway, good luck, Josh. We'll miss you....but you know what they say:
If you're not a Gator, you're Gator bait.

Josh Portis’s next school will be his fifth since April 2003. The athletic director at Portis’s school in 2002-03 dealth with Mama Portis.
> The AD: “His mom thought he should be given a free walk. That’s not going to happen. I liked the woman a lot, but she had a skewed view that her kid was never being praised enough.”
> Unnamed friend of the Portises: “With that woman, you have no idea. You just have no idea.”
Portis’s mother moved from California to be near Josh in Gainesville. The Orlando Sentinel reports she visited practice at least once a week.
We Are the Boys research found Patricia Portis has no collegiate or high school football coaching experience.

Sounds like his mom is doing all the talking. I guess she doesn't have any 401K or other retirement plan. Play better in practice and maybe he would get noticed!
I guess he could transfer to USF or Eckerd College.
