Spurrier named SEC Coach of the Year

By JOSEPH PERSON

Staff Writer

Steve Spurrier wasted little time serving notice to the rest of the SEC that the Head Ball Coach is back in the conference.
Spurrier was named the Associated Press’ SEC’s Coach of the Year on Monday after leading the Gamecocks (7-4) to their first bowl game in four years and beating Tennessee and Florida in his first season in Columbia.

In the voting by the conference’s media members, USC receiver Sidney Rice and rover Ko Simpson both made the All-SEC first team. Simpson, the SEC’s Freshman of the Year in 2004, was a unanimous selection.

Rice, who broke USC single-season records for touchdown receptions (12) and consecutive games (8) with a touchdown catch, was edged in the Freshman of the Year voting by Arkansas tailback Darren McFadden.

I was listening to the sports editor of the Athens Banner Herald talking on our local radio. He was incredulous to this. He says Richt, Turbeville and Miles are far more deserving. Let's get the flaming going!

No Spurrier is undoubtly the winner, Richt maybe, Tuberville no Im a believer if Al Borges isnt there Tuberville is in the unemployment line as we speak. We beat UT and UF for the first time in a long time, almost be UGA, and we had 11 players kicked off the team at the beginning of the year!!!!

Congrats to SOS, he deserved it. Considering what he had to work with, he brought the goods that he promised during half-time of the Spring Game.

He just signed a big time extension, so your wish has been granted. ;)

I just LOVES to hate me some Spurrier, but it's downright scary to think about what he did this year. Cleaning house, squeaking by in the opener against Central Florida (when everyone thought they sucked), barely missing out on beating the Dawgs, finishing 7-4.....God help us when he starts recruiting.
But if I saw him today, I'd have to give him a big ole high five for beating the Gators.
In order:
Spurrier
Miles (still did a great job under difficult circumstances)
Richt (I think NOW we'll find out how good he is)
Shula (living up to lofty expectations is hard)
Tuberville (just because he said the '05 backfield was better than '04 - he was only wrong by 150 yards)

You're welcome for the UF loss, believe me I savior that win even more now that they got picked over us in a bowl game.

Everyone knows Spurrier is a great coach. However, I can't help but think this award may be a deciding factor for some recruits who may have doubted Spurriers' ability versus other HC's.

It was a tough year to figure out who would be coach of the year. Like others have said, you could have picked Richt, Shula, Tuberville or Miles along with Spurrier. Maybe even Bobby Johnson from Vanderbilt could have been considered. You really can't go wrong with who you pick from those six and you can make a case for each coach.
