It is being reportedly that Rebel tight end coach and recruiting coordinator Matt Luke will be hired to coach tight ends at Tennessee. An announcement is expected early next week. I have no idea how good of a coach Luke is, but he was the lone holdover at Ole Miss from Cutcliffe's staff. If true, it is strange that Luke would choose his former boss over his alma mater.

Sounds like it may be more than just the players who are having a hard time sticking it out in Oxford.

Tempest in a teapot. There is a new OL headed into Oxford and while Luke was not being threatened with termination, it is not clear that his coaching duties would have stayed the same. According to sources inside the athletic department, he initially turned down the offer, but Cutcliffe sweetened the deal.
It is very common for former players to choose situations over their alma mater. Ken Norton at USCal is a prime example. He was given the choice after serving at USC as a GA for a year, Dorrel offered him a coaching slot. When he went to Coach Carroll, he was offered a similar deal and he stayed at SC. Go to any athletic website and look at the number of GA's and Asst. Coaches who are from rival teams. Hell, Spurrier's own son left Florida with Stoops to go to Oklahoma. Why don't we see any chatter about that.
You guys need to find something to do besides make up reasons that life sucks so much at Ole Miss.

Rebel, wake up man. You lost a third of your recruiting class to dismissals and transfers. That is not a good thing. You holdover a coach only to contemplate firing him a little later. Are the bad choices being made at the start or the end? You can't spin that into a good situation. Its okay, just admit it. It'll make you feel better.

THIS MUST BE THE ARM PIT OF RECRUTING IN THE SEC !
I can't see why anyone would want to play football in Miss?
Whether it be at UM or MS... In the off season what is there to do and where is A PLACE to do it??
No beaches, no mountians, no lakes[to speak of]... I guess it must be the thrill of watching the guys at the A&P unload the veggies on the weekends, or gathering up a group of kids and having a blast watching the CROME RUST at "Bubba's Junk Yard"
HOW DOSE ANY COACH LURE OF A RECRUTE TO THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI?
SORRY, BUT I DON'T GET IT !!!!

Come on guys.... lets not turn EVERY single thread into trash talk. There's a forum here specifically for that. Why not try to have some intelligent conversation on topics like this instead of just simply flaming schools every other thread.

Dude,
You DO realize that you live in South Carolina don't you?
Most recently famous for the Right Wing Christian Separatists who want to establish a fundamentalist Christian country in your midst. The reason that they gave for choosing South Carolina was that so many people there already believed what they believed.
I was born in Columbia, raised for 14 years in Georgetown, and I have relatives from Moncks Corner to Irmo and from Union to Kingstree. Growing up, we had a house on Pawley's Island. I know the Palmetto State quite well.
I lived in Mississippi from the time I was 14 until I was 28 and have family and friends there as well.
Having been in California for the past 25 years, I can tell you this. There is no one, repeat no one outside of the South that feels there is a dimes worth of difference between the two states.
You talk about Beaches. I live in OC about eight miles from the Pacific Ocean and the longest unbroken expanse of public beaches in the United States. (By law, there are no private beaches in California).
You talk about Mountains. I guess you do have a snippet of the Smokies in SoCar. I believe Sassafras Mountain is a towering 3554 feet. I live less than a mile from the foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains...a lower branch of the Sierras. Santiago Peak is about ten miles from my house is 5676 feet. Mt. Whitney is a three hour drive. In case you have forgotten your geography, Whitney is the tallest peak in the lower 48 at 14,495 feet. I guess you can call those little things mountains if you want to.
I live 10 minutes from Disneyland and Angels Stadium and the Anaheim Pond. I am 45 minutes from downtown LA and the Coliseum and Staples Center. I am 60 minutes from Seaworld, the San Diego Zoo, the San Pasqual Wine Country, Palm Springs and Joshua Tree Nation Monument. I am 90 minutes from the San Gabriel and San Bernardino Mtns, which includes six ski resorts, dozens of alpine lakes, and hundreds of miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. I have not listed Malibu, Catalina, Santa Monica, Knotts Berry Farm, Universal Studios, Death Valley, Hollywood, Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills, etc.
The question I have for you is why would anyone want to go anywhere else.
The reason, my dear provincial rube, is because unlike you, most people look beyond the superficial. They are drawn to a place because of the people that are there and the relationships that they might build.
Mississippi is full of great folks...as is South Carolina. It is the people that make these places great, not the beaches or mountains.
I presume that there is a reason that no one has asked you to help with recruiting.

Anyhow, to get back to the actual topic here....
I've heard pretty good things about Luke in the past, and its a plus that he and Cutcliffe work well together. Also, Tennessee has a few good TE's committed to them right now. So it would be a good opportunity for Luke to show his ability to transition players from HS to college.

I can't say much about how good a coach he is, but he is well-liked by damn-near everybody associated with Ole Miss. I understand that he is a fairly quiet, reserved guy. There were complaints about Tight End production, especially blocking, but it would be unfair to hang all of that on one position coach. He has been the recruiting coordinator and that has been going quite well.
The Ole Miss family will miss him, but it is probably time for him to move on. I have friends in Tupelo who know his father pretty well and they point out that he is not selling his house, he plans to return. Maybe after Orgeron maybe before.

Well said, and the best part of the post uscrebel. And if we aren't drawn to a place because of the people that are there, we make the best of it and sometimes stay based on the relationships we build and what we learn about the area we live in. As someone who has lived in Columbia (growing up and living there until I was 23, most of my family and my wife's family still live in the area), and moving to Texas (Texarkana), Kentucky (Lexington), Georgia (Augusta), and now having lived in Alabama (Dothan) since 1995, I have always been able to build relationships and enjoy the places I've lived. Each place has had unique things to offer and I wouldn't trade any of my experiences I've had or the friends I've made at each place I've lived.
