UTSports.com - Tennessee head coach Phillip Fulmer announced Monday that David Cutcliffe has rejoined the staff as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator.
Cutcliffe, 51, was a member of UT's staff for 17 years, including six years as offensive coordinator, before leaving after the 1998 season to become head coach at Mississippi.
"I'm very pleased to have David back at Tennessee," Fulmer said. "He is a great football coach, person, leader and teacher. Our long relationship professionally and personally always has been a positive influence for me. He will challenge our thinking, be creative with our offense and very demanding as a coordinator."
Cutcliffe compiled a 44-29 won-lost record with the Rebels from 1999-2004 and coached Ole Miss to four bowl victories against only one loss. He was the only Rebels coach in history to win at least seven games in each of his first five seasons before being named assistant head coach (offense)/quarterbacks coach at Notre Dame in January.
Cutcliffe reluctantly resigned that position with the Fighting Irish in June after undergoing triple bypass heart surgery in March.
"I want to thank athletics director Mike Hamilton and Phillip Fulmer for this opportunity," Cutcliffe said. "Four months ago when I was looking at my future, I was totally focused. I said that if I got back into coaching and was able to reach that level of health again, I made the statement to my wife that it only would be as a head coach.
"I never saw this opportunity presenting itself. But when it did, that certainly made me reconsider things. I love the University of Tennessee. I'm very familiar with the program and the people involved with the program. I just looked at it as a wonderful opportunity and I'm looking forward to being a part of the Tennessee football family."

Under Cutcliffe's tutelage as offensive coordinator from 1993-98, Tennessee twice led the Southeastern Conference in total offense and three times was the league's rushing leader. The Vols finished no worse than fifth in scoring offense, including leading the SEC in 1993 and placing second nationally with an average of 42.8 points per game. :D :D
The Vols were 63-11 during that span with three SEC Eastern Division crowns, two league championships and the 1998 national title. Cutcliffe received the Frank Broyles Award in 1998 as the nation's top assistant coach and was a finalist for the honor in 1997.

As much as I would have liked a young innovator, I am very pleased with the hiring of Coach Cutt. Our former players rave about his knowledge and attention to detail which is what this offense needs. Hopefully, we will see quick results in the development of Ainge and Crompton.

Thank god Steve Spurrier was reincarnated in Knoxville, and is Peyton Manning returuning, I thought Erik Ainge was gonna be the starter next year!!!

It's great to see someone who knows how to run an offense return to Tennessee. And with the dismissal of Pat and Jimmy Ray, maybe we can get someone in who can teach the WR's and OL something about playing football like Tennessee used to play.
100% pure vindication......

Well since he's working with his good buf Fulmer again, he won't be selling top recruits to him anymore like he did with Parys Haralson out of Madison Central four years ago.
Damn, I'm glad we got spurrier when we did, the Vols are gonna be vicious...

I think this is a great move for Cut and a great move for Phat Phil and an improvement for Tennessee football in general. Kudos to the Vol administration for having such good sense.

Ya, Cutliff really did great back in the 90s as our OC. Hopefully he'll be our frist step to bringing UT back to UT level. And ya, Geaux, this was a very Smart move by Fulmer to take this opportunity while it showed itself.
Go Vols!!

Regardless of what Ole Miss fans are saying, Cutcliffe is a fine coach. He won games for them and it is nearly universally agreed that his firing was a bad move. Charlie Weis hired him as assistant head coach. Arkansas reportedly bid 400K for his services as coordinator. The Vols couldn't wait to lure him back. He has earned respect and admiration from the Mannings, Tee Martin, Heath Shuler and I am sure many, many others. In short, there is a difference of opinion between nearly the entire world of college football and Ole Miss fans. Now, who are we to believe?

44-29 ain't bad anywhere, but we would have killed for those kind of results. I'm glad the guy got where he wants to be. I know this conference is going to KILL in the near future. Screw BCS if they don't acknowledge us when it happens. 'Cause...it's going to happen.

Yup, and for the first time in a while I'm not worried about everyone else getting better. Cuz we are only going to get better also.

What a load of crap.
Using your logic, I suppose he didn't recruit for the following seasons;
1999: 8-4
2000: 7-5
2001: 7-4
2002: 7-6
2003:10-3
That rates about a 9.5 on my "Weird-BS-O-Meter".

Actually, the common wisdom would be that the players in '99, '00, & '01 were Tubbies. That means that in '99 & '00 when Deuce was setting records, Cutlcliffe had the good fortune to be there. Eli started his run in 2001. While it is a matter of record that the Mannings and Eli liked Cut, his recruiting classes were never higher than the mid thirties and he NEVER prepared anyone to follow Eli.
You seem to like Cutcliffe so much, why don't you lobby to have him be head coach at USCar? Better yet, add a room to your house and let him coach your schnausher or something.
Bite the board, hodaddy!

So in theory, if Ogreron would have won this year it would have been with Cutcliffe's players and you along with most OM fans would be singing his praise. You can't have it both ways chief.

I do like Cutcliffe. He made the best with what he had in Oxford and succeeded. He played by the rules and didn't embarrass the alumni of OM with his legal troubles unlike somebody we know. I know a screw-job when I see one and the firing of Cutcliffe was a SCREW-JOB! He brought OM more success then anyone else within the last 30 years and what did it get him? Ungrateful snobbish fans such as yourself. Fans that set a standard that is nearly impossible to meet in the modern day SEC.
I can't wait to see your face three (3) years down the road when you're still where you are now under Orgeron. The Cutcliffe days will almost look like MNC seasons compared to what's in store for OM in the future while Oge's there.

He didn't have to embarass the OM alumni with his legal troubles because he graduated from the Phil Fulmer School of Discipline so his players did it for him.

Hey, Einstein! Read your own post. If CEO had won with Cut's players, we damn sure would have sung his praises...Cut couldn't win with the last year, it would have been a miracle for CEO to win with them this year. As far as the not having it both ways, we have only ask to have it one way. Without Culcliffe.

Our institution has every right to set whatever standards we wish to set. Whether or not they are impossible to meet remains to be seen.
As a side note, your notion that we Ole Miss folks are snobbish sounds like the prattlings of an 8th grader who was not invited to somebody's birthday party. I pointed out once before that your obsession with Ole Miss bordered on bizarre. i was wrong...it IS bizarre. There is no one on the board who spends the energy, time, and venom that you do dissing any other program. We all take our shots at coaches, programs, etc., but your need to bully and demean makes you a singularly offensive guy.
I can't wait to see your face three (3) years down the road when you're still where you are now under Orgeron. The Cutcliffe days will almost look like MNC seasons compared to what's in store for OM in the future while Oge's there.
I will be quite happy with where I am in 3 years...win or lose...Orgeron or no Orgeron. I will, however, see if I can get some of the local middle school kids to invite you to a party or two.
Bite that, hodaddy!
Yo, Barney. I may be a doofus. I may be a butthead. I may be many things, but you are the only hodaddy on this beach.
Hey, Einstein! Read your own post. If CEO had won with Cut's players, we damn sure would have sung his praises..
You can't do that Einstein. You seem to claim that Cutcliffe's wins don't reflect on him because they were "Tubby's" players right? So, if Oge would have won with Cutcliffe's players, then you must hold Oge to the same standard don't you think? See post below...

My dear adolescent friend,
I do not claim to be smarter than anyone but you. I must admit that such a statement is note a triumph as is it the equivalent to saying that I am smarter than a plankton or sea monkey. (Although I do like it when the little sea monkeys all line up when you shine a flashlight in their tank. Can you do that, too?)
Seriously, it is not your intellect that I question. Sadly, your posts often show a glimmer of wit or the possibility that several of your grey cells have acted independently of external stimulus. I am simply weary of your need to have at Ole Miss. With so many great Gamecocks around, I am stunned that you came from the same school. I guess the institutional dna does mutate from time to time.
A quick not about your creative editing and the implication that I am out of my element in reading your trenchantly complex posts. Your accusation was that I misread your post and you that your post simply said:
Ungrateful snobbish fans such as yourself. Fans that set a standard that is nearly impossible to meet in the modern day SEC.
However, what you actually said was:
He brought OM more success then anyone else within the last 30 years and what did it get him? Ungrateful snobbish fans such as yourself. Fans that set a standard that is nearly impossible to meet in the modern day SEC.
Let's take the Chomksian transformational view of your post. You asked what Cut's success brought him. You answer "ungrateful snobbish fans." Immediately following, you add "such as yourself" as an appositive. That is, you have stated quite clearly that Ole Miss fans are snobbish and ungrateful and I am but an exemplar of that class.
And this, of course, is how you generally function...tarring all with a single brush. You continually ignore the fact that virtually every Ole Miss fan on this board has stated on numerous occasions that we disagreed with the way the dismissal was handled. You have dragged out that sad picture of Cutcliffe so many times that I think you should pay the man royalities.
Arrogantly and snobbishly yours,
USCREBEL

Some of the enemy discharged missiles, others moved up in close formation under their shields; fresh men quickly replaced the exhausted. Earth cast by the whole body together over the entrenchments gave the Neos a means of ascent and at the same time covered over the appliances which the Uscrebs had concealed in the ground; and neither side had now neither arms nor strength enough.
And, as the two weary forces camped for the night (their respite was brief, for)......dawn approached.

Terms are being hashed out as we speak regarding this work in progress. But, there seems to be disgruntlement over the actual direction in which the project is to proceed.
[However, the battle scenes are to be the most splendid ever conceived! The protagonists are both brilliant field commanders, each with his own particular set of strengths. Let us watch the action as it unfolds; without giving away too much, let me just say that the plot definitely thickens, (possibly) descending into a vicious and tangled morass.]
