Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron announced on Monday that sophomore linebacker Dontae Reed, junior receiver Milton Collins and freshman linebacker LeRon King have quit the team for personal reasons.
When asked if he was surprised by the players' decisions with just two games remaining in the season, Orgeron paused, then replied, ''A little bit.''
Reed, who initially was a walk-on from Oakhaven, was granted a scholarship in August after a superb spring practice. He had become a backup to outside linebacker to sophomore Garry Pack. Reed played in all nine games, picking up five tackles.
Collins was a junior college transfer from Jones (Miss.) Community College. He battled injuries at the start of the season. After recovering, Collins appeared in three games, making one catch for 3 yards.
King played in five games, recording one tackle.
Collins and King were part of Orgeron's initial signing class. Their departure brings the total to five players in that signing class that have left the team, joining linebacker Dustin Forston, offensive lineman Lance Lee and defensive lineman Jada Brown. Linebacker Wallace Bates was dismissed from the team before preseason practice began.
Extra points
Joining running back Mico McSwain on the injured list is freshman defensive end LaMark Armour, who left the Arkansas game in the third quarter after injuring his left leg. Orgeron said he is doubtful for the LSU game, and could also miss the Egg Bowl. ... The only tickets available for Saturday's game are standing room only tickets, which are going for $42. Fans are encouraged to arrive early. Gates will open at 4:45 p.m. ... Ole Miss has lost three home games for the first time since 1999. The last time the Rebels dropped four games in Oxford was in 1994.
