USC football player arrested after off-campus altercation
LOS ANGELES (AP) — University of Southern California linebacker Rey
Maualuga was arrested for investigation of misdemeanor battery following an off-campus altercation, police said.
The 18-year-old freshman was arrested around 4 a.m. Tuesday after allegedly punching a man at a party near campus three hours earlier, said Kevin Maiberger, a Los Angeles police spokesman. Maualuga left the scene but later turned himself into police, said Officer Jason Lee, another LAPD spokesman.
He was released a short time later after posting $20,000 bail.
The 6-foot-2, 245-pound Maualuga, who practiced with the top-ranked Trojans Tuesday afternoon, said he could not comment on the incident.
Coach Pete Carroll said he was not sure if Maualuga, who is the Trojans' backup middle linebacker and a key special teams performer, would be allowed to play in USC's game Saturday against Stanford at the Coliseum.
"I talked to Rey today and tried to get as much information as you can, then there's some stuff yet to come," he said. "As always, we're going to do our stuff in-house as we have in the past and take care of our business."
Carroll said Maualuga's father is ill in Northern California.
"I've been very concerned about Rey," he said. "He has a very serious family thing going on. I just want to make sure we do a good job helping him."
Maualuga has made 13 tackles in seven games this season.
He is scheduled to be arraigned Nov. 22.
