BATON ROUGE -- The LSU-Alabama game in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Saturday, Nov. 12, has been picked up by CBS and will kick off at 2:30 p.m. in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

No. 6 LSU (6-1, 4-1 Southeastern Conference West) and No. 4 Alabama (8-0, 5-0 SEC West) will likely be playing to decide the West championship and trip to Atlanta for the SEC Championship Game.

The Tigers remained No. 8 in the Bowl Championship Series on Monday after defeating North Texas 56-3 on Saturday. Alabama moved up from No. 5 to No. 4 in the BCS after beating Utah State 35-3 on Saturday with Georgia falling from No. 4 to No. 11 after losing 14-10 to Florida.

LSU plays Division I-AA Appalachian State (6-2) at 7 p.m. Saturday in Tiger Stadium while Alabama travels to Mississippi State (2-6, 0-5 SEC) for a 2:30 p.m. CBS game Saturday, which will be the Crimson Tide's fifth CBS appearance this season.

LSU and Alabama have not played such a significant SEC game since 1996 when the Tigers entered with a 6-1 record, 4-1 in the league and ranked No. 11 in the nation. Alabama came in at 7-1 and 4-1 and ranked No. 10 in the nation. The Tide prevailed 26-0 in Tiger Stadium on ESPN as tailback Shaun Alexander set a school record that still stands with 291 yards on 20 carries.

Alabama went on to win the West with a 6-2 mark and beat Michigan in the Outback Bowl to finish 10-3 in coach Gene Stallings' last season. LSU finished 10-2 and 6-2 and beat Clemson 10-7 in the Peach Bowl.

This will be the first LSU-Alabama game on CBS since LSU defeated the Tide 35-21 in 2001 at Tuscaloosa. LSU beat Alabama in Tiger Stadium on CBS in 2000, 30-28, after not beating the Tide at home since 1969.

HELMS LOST FOR SEASON: Brett Helms, who started LSU's first two games at left guard after an excellent spring, is likely out for the season with an ankle injury, LSU coach Les Miles said on Monday at his weekly press luncheon.

Helms, a redshirt freshman from Stuttgart, Ark., injured his knee in the second game against Tennessee and missed two games. He returned to play briefly against Florida and played more against Auburn. He then hurt his ankle in the first half of the North Texas game on Saturday.

"A guy just fell into his legs when he was blocking somebody," left tackle Andrew Whitworth said Monday. "That's how linemen get hurt a lot. Some guy fell on his ankle."

Will Arnold has started in place of Helms since the game following Tennessee at Mississippi State.

"He'll be out indefinitely," Miles said of Helms. "We'll certainly miss him."

"We've had a lot of injuries and a lot of guys in and out on the line," Whitworth said. "We never know who's in there."

Backup tackle Peter Dyakowski (ankle) may return to game action Saturday after several weeks out.

Outside linebacker E.J. Kuale (ankle) came out of the North Texas game fine after making two tackles and is expected to play more Saturday.

NISWANGER HONORED: Center Rudy Niswanger, a senior from Monroe, is one of 16 athletes around the nation to be named to the prestigious National Scholar Athlete Class of 2005 by the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame.

Previous honorees from LSU were Rodney Reed of West Monroe in 2003, Bradie James of the Monroe area in 2002, Chad Kessler in 1997 and Nacho Albergamo in 1987.

Niswanger is also now eligible to win the Draddy Trophy, which is known as the academic Heisman Trophy. Niswanger graduated in May with a 4.0 grade point average and plans to attend medical school at LSUHSC in Shreveport.
