Here it goes with heart again. I'll tell you one thing; Tennessee this year was(is) overhyped, and under-acheiving. They spotty at best against every single team. But one thing they're not, is heartless.
But Wow, i saw a spart of greatest out of Spurrier and the Cocks. Executing on all three sides of the ball, especially in the passing game. Someone said that USC deserved to win more than UT tonight, and I totally agree. Kudos to the Gamecocks.
But on the positive side. I'm glad this happened this season, which is already down the drain. Maybe next season will look alittle more hopefull.
Also, about Notre Dame. Ever since Florida, it seems like everyweek we have a horrible game, then next week we have a great game. Florida to LSU, Georgia to Bama. and now USC and upcoming ND. Lets hope the trend conitnues. Even if we don't beat ND, I hope it'll be alittle better showing than some of our games.

Thanks for the comments. Yes, we won, and we are elated, but we are gonna win respectfully. That was a helluva game, and could have gone either way. We are proud of our team, and have been waiting for a win like this for a long time. Tennessee will be back. :)

That was indeed a very good win for South Carolina. Having Spurrier as your coach has to be worth at least one win, and it showed today. The Gamecocks hung in there and got the win in a game that could have been won by either team in the end. The defense probably played as well as it has during any game this year. There's still a lot of work to be done if this team is going to make it to a bowl, but if Carolina can play like they did against Tennessee for the rest of teh season, they'll definitely get there.
On the Tennessee side, this loss has to be devastating. I suggest you not let your children listen to Vol Calls this week, as callers may say words you might not want them to hear. The offense struggled again today, which probably means change is on the way. I'm not sure if Randy Sanders, Fulmer or even Mike Hamilton (Tennessee's AD) will survive to see next season. It's possible that Vanderbilt could deny Tennessee a bowl at the end of the year.

I think the only thing that the Vols really need to change is the recievers coach, the playcalling was good but the recievers just weren't prepared. I can't believe we were actually able to pull it out after the horrible field position we had for the whole 3rd quarter.

Good point. The same reason I feared we were going to give up some easy points and not be able to pull it off. We hung in there, and dang if we ain't a second half team for once!!! :)

Josh Brown is officially off of my sh*t list, and I might just get a tattoo of Sidney Rice's portrait on my back.
Sorry vols, we tried to give you this one, we had 10 penalties and 3 turnovers. What more do you need?

Here are a few random observations from what I saw...tell me if I'm wrong:
1) UT lost this game the second they gave up trying to run the ball down our throats and instead, chose to let Ainge sail pass after pass 5 yards ahead, 5 feet over or right into his receivers' bread basket only to have it dropped. It was either Fulmer getting a little antsy with the score being so close so long or they thought their punter was going to put every punt they tried inside the 5 yard line and it didn't happen.
2) The Cocks killed UT using the quick-slant pass when they didn't throw it to Sidney Rice (more on him later ;) ). Had Jason Allen been around, I think that may have cost us a WR head or two and it probably wouldn't have been as available that late in the game. No offense, Carlos...just a figure of speech. :)
3) Our O-Line stepped it up when they needed to. They had their moments where they looked like what we've come to expect of them but this night, they opened holes when they needed it, they kept Mitchell upright on key passing downs down the stretch and that last Mike Davis first down run that sealed it was all them.
4) Spurrier's calm demeanor (say what? LOL) was a very refreshing change from Holtz's nervous pacing back and forth and I believe that difference was translated on the field. You'll hear a lot of Gamecock fans say this week, "We could have easily folded like we have in years past..." and I think it's partly because of the confidence they have in Spurrier to lead them.
5) We need to cherish our timeouts like they are our children. Burning two of them back-to-back with so little time left in the 4th could have made this turn out a lot differently. If we hadn't wasted so many of them in previous games, I wouldn't be so concerned about it....
6) How hard is it to get 7 men on the freakin' line of scrimmage? Think that was called 4 or 5 times tonight. And Blake needs a special visor that super-imposes the play clock right in front of his face, we had just as many delay of games. I think we had 10 penalties, all from our offense.
7) That's the defense we Gamecock fans were expecting to see from the first game on this year. Jonathan Joseph, you get my defensive MVP this week, buddy. :)
8) I don't think any kicker we ever had throughout the entire Lou Holtz era could kick a ball 49 yards; much less on the road at Tennessee, down by 2 with 2:45 left in the game. It'd have been blocked, the snap would've sailed over the holders' head, the holder would have juggled it before losing it, etc....anything but it sailing through dead center to put us in the lead.
9) I love ya, KO...but you need to spend some time in practice having someone whip balls as hard as they can at you from 15 yards so you can learn to catch again. 3rd & long with just under 2 minutes and you let an overthrown ball over the middle hit you in the facemask? Dood...those are the ones that seal games.
10) SIDNEY RICE: 8 RECEPTIONS, 112 YARDS & 2 TOUCHDOWNS. Three games to go and he's already broken the record for touchdown receptions by a USC receiver. He won't just play on Sunday, he's going to excel on Sunday.   :D
Vol fans, those who've braved the boards thus far, you've got my respect as gracious losers & I hope we Gamecock fans come across as just as gracious winners. This game easily could have gone either way but we as a team, as a program and as fans needed this win more than y'all did. Kudos on a hard-fought game from both sides...this is going to be fun to watch develop over the next few years. :D
One more to bowl-eligibility, people...we can't become satisfied just yet. I know I'm not....well, I am for now. I'll give myself a couple daze. ;) @ARK, Florida & Clemson left...GO COCKS! :D
ps: my apologies on the length...I do top tens for my fantasy football league so I tend to get carried away.

Actually, it looks to be more a case of bad luck and poor execution. The playmakers aren't making plays, yet they are continually in position to do so. Time after time, not just in this game, but all season, there were unfortunate fumbles, overthrown passes, etc. This is the same offense TN has been running for years......I'll say again, simply poor execution. The inaccuracy of both their QB's is major. This same team with Peyton Manning would have been devastating this year. It's too bad he was relegated to the sidelines last night.

I wonder how many coaches and coordinators have found the unemployment line over the years because of Spurrier's ways. I'm sure that Fulmer is safe, but you you've got to believe that Sanders is looking over the edge of a precipice.

It has been frustrating for Vol fans this year. For some reason, the offense has shot themselves in the foot at the worst possible times this season. You can expect that to happen a game or two in the season, but when the whole season is about poor execution, most fans tend to get frustrated.
I was relegated to listening on Radio and not all of the game. There is not much I can add to the discussion of the game. All I have is "Congratulations to the Gamecocks, you were the better team last night."

I think TN definitely has heart, which would certainly come in handy at South Bend. I wouldn't be too surprised if they spring an upset, as they are due for another breakout game, as at LSU. Actually, they played well at Bama, which but for poor execution, they would have won. Their playmakers are constantly in position to make plays but haven't done so, with any consistency. Look for the Vols to win at least six and go to a bowl.

Well, let's see. You have said that UT lacks heart over and over again. That is completely wrong. I have watched every minute of every game and the effort is there. They are just not executing. You totally oversimplify the issue. UT has talent, but isn't producing so they must not be trying. That's ridiculous and incredibly insulting to our players. We are deserving of insults, but those should be aimed at our lack of productivity, not effort. I have tried repeatedly to reason with you on this issue to no avail. It seems that once you get an idea stuck in you head, whether good or bad, it remains there forever. Dropped passes, fumbles, and untimely penalties have little to do with heart. We should all TRY to evaluate our teams objectively. If I saw lack of effort, I would be singing the same tune that you are. It's just not that simple.

You are exactly right. A team has to have the right breaks to survive in the SEC. A perfect example is Alabama's season last year. There is a very fine line between a 500 season and the SEC champion.

So Dropped balls have nothing to do with heart ... Wrong My friend .. a player with heart will make a play when he is needed . he will rise above talent and just get it done ...
Example .. a full back the size of Offensive lineman running free into the endzone for a winning score fumbling ..
penalties that cost game , are definately a sign of lack of character and will .
13 arrests would show a lack of team spirit... Infact it shows a complete lack of control by the instituion , and a total ME attitude from teh team .
and if you decided that I am being unreasonable becaeu I disagree with you , well sorry . But your reasoning has only fortified what I have said .
I know what heartless looks like , I have seen a team underachieve .
I have also seen a group of rag tag div 1 rejects .. beat top ten teams ..
I have seen a 250 pound center who had no reason to even be playing at this level start 4 years and play with no cartilidge in his knee and blow people off teh ball ...

Not to knock SC's win over UT, because it was a great win. (Hell, I even ran around my neighborhood at midnight with the Gamecock flag screaming about the win. The beer had nothing to do with that...) But I there is no doubt that SC still has a way to go. Blake looked good at times, but seemed very slow at others. We had a respectable running game, but Mike Davis needs to add some pounds becuase he never had yards after contact. One thing that really worried me was why it always seemed to take SC too much time to get a play off. Is that Spurrier's fault or is that Mitchell trying to call an audible? Those are just silly penalties that need to be fixed if they want to get really good. What does everyone think about how good SC really is? It was a good win, but there is still a ways to go if they want to be competing for an SEC championship.

If fumbles, penalties, and dropped passes are all about heart, where does the head come in? Does it play any role at all in football? The errors that you mention are called MENTAL MISTAKES. They are called that for a reason. A player fighting and stretching to extend the ball beyond the goal-line who fumbles is not showing a lack of heart. Instead, that person is focused so heavily on scoring that he forgets to secure the ball. A player who false starts down in the red zone is not showing a lack of desire. Guys who drop passes don't do so because they are not trying. It is often a matter of concentration, as in mental. These things are a lack of discipline and of proper execution. Fulmer stated that he felt that the guys were often guilty of trying to do too much which can cause a player to breakdown fundamentally. That is not a lack of effort or heart as you say.

Congratulations to the Gamecocks. I've always believed in Spurs. You guys are just at the beginning of seeing a great college coach do his thing. Lee Corso to the contrary, South Carolina will recruit strong and become a prominent program in the SEC.
To Tennessee: Hard fought, tough loss. You guys are going through some bad times, but it won't last. I am glad (well, sort of) that we gave you a little cause for celebration when you journeyed down to the Bayou. (But don't look for that to happen often!)

I will give your questions my best shot. First, I think Spurrier took a football team to Tennessee last night and brought home a family. Yes, we had some problems, but Tenn. is no easy place to play with the noise. Penalties hurt us, and turnovers and taking so long to get plays in could have beaten us. The bright side is we overcame it all and were able to squeak it out. Wasn't always pretty, but we made history last night. I agree with what my dad in Atlanta told me this morning. His statement. "You have just seen the turnaround of South Carolina football. One day that win may mean more than you will ever realize right now". I agree with that. Now nothing seems IMPOSSIBLE. Bumps on the road still? Sure. But they have come a long way. Remember the days we were on here discussing who the heck would be the QB, and please don't let it be Blake? Boy don't we look stupid now. LOL My point is Spurrier saw what he wanted in that young man, and we need to stand behind this team, and let him do his job and not question him. We made history last night with a team who was undersized, out manned, has lost numerous players since Spurrier's arrival, with a QB starting his first season, a freshman tailback, many freshmen WR's, and all the rest. This is a team who has heard the boo birds at home, and a team who at times played without heart this very year. Yes, I think Carolina football MAY be about to change forever. There is now not a team on the schedule we cannot beat. Not saying we will win out from here, but it is not impossible now. These kids now see what they can do with hard work and dedication, and I think they now believe in the Spurrier system. This game means a whole lot more than a simple W. :)

I am here to take my kudos! I took my Garnet-colored glasses, put them on tight and firm & predicted our win! Though it wasn't 35-14, I was 1 point off on Tennessee's score & I did say BM was gonna have a great night. I said it wasn't gonna be the "Gloom-and-Doom" game many of my Gamecock brethen (and quite a few rivals) had predicted...and I was right!
Later this week...my USC-Arky prediction. Stay tuned!

Kudos! Kudos! Kudos!
You were right on target, Orlandogamecock.
I also had (and have) great faith in Spurrier.
Can't wait for your precision-tested USC-Hawg prediction. I think you stop McFadden and pass the Hawgs silly.

Of all the rotten luck Saturday, I was denied an opportunity to witness the second half of SC's win due to a death threat from the Mrs..She was none too eager to rub in the loss (she was a Florida Girl when we met) and held me to a promise to escort her to a Halloween Party at her friend's place where no ball was allowed to interfere with the festivities. Good thing I do the drinking part of partying well, for that was the only way I got away with stealing a bite from her very hot co-worker 'Vampira', lol.
Congrats Gamecocks for an improbable victory in a hostile venue. Solace to you Vols, I cannot fathom the state of mind with which you are in right now.

I'm outta kudos, I got the munchies not long after our win and they were all I had in the house. Sorry. But I will give you some leftover congrats, they're just as good, I hear. ;)
But yah, had we not been pinned inside our 5-yard line three times in the 3rd quarter, your prediction could have easily come a lot closer than it was. No pressure on the USC/Ark score now though...with success comes expectations, orlando...let's see how YOU respond. LOL :D

Well, here's reply number one.......I'm glad you still support your Vols. It shouldn't be any other way.
I don't claim to have read every single post regarding the SC/Tennessee game, but I've not seen any posts where someone has gotten carried away and rubbed it in on your Vols (at least not from a Gamecock poster). If so, I missed them.
I believe the reason most of the Gamecock fans on here have not "rubbed it in" is because of the mostly classy Tennessee fans on here (e.g., FernandoMike, as well as numerous others). I'm not sure if you fall in that "classy" category yet or not, as I haven't seen enough of your posts to know. Personally, I'm thrilled about our victory (it was a long time coming). However, I understand (as most everyone else on here does as well) that the outcome, like several other years, could have easily gone the other way (it was that tight of a game, and either team could have pulled it out at the end). And, I believe Tennessee WILL be back. However, whether this is the only win we get from the Vols (as you state that this will be the only win we'll be getting), that remains to be seen. I expect this to be a pretty decent rivalry between Spurrier's Gamecocks and Fulmer's Vols over the next several years with both teams pulling out some wins. Hopefully, more for us than for the Vols. ;)
Continue to support your Vols, for I believe they will be back.

You are right, Gamecock Fan. In wake of the win, USC fans have been exuberant, but classy. That is amazing especially considering that there is such a large contingent of you guys on the board. Maybe, ya'll sensed the fragile psyche of Vols fans like myself. :) Its already been a long season.
Anyway, thank you for your kind words and I hope that your prediction that UT will get back to normal soon comes to bear.

Tennessee has nothing to be ashamed of. They are a great & storied program and will be back. The game could've gone either way, IMHO. HOWEVER...
I am hoping that our Gamecocks will build upon this victory and go into Arky and the rest of the season with fire & determination and not overconfidence. I believe that SOS will have their heads on straight for this game.
PS: I will still take my kudos, though!
COMING SOON: USC/ARKY prediction!
