Orioles, Mazzone agree on three-year deal
Associated Press

BALTIMORE (AP) - Pitching coach Leo Mazzone and the Baltimore Orioles reached agreement on a three-year contract Wednesday night, hours after the Atlanta Braves coach ended discussions with the New York Yankees.

"The deal is finished business," according to a source close to the negotiations, who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity

Mazzone, considered to be one of the finest pitching coaches in the majors, has been in the Atlanta organization since 1979 and was pitching coach of the Braves since 1990. He will replace Ray Miller, who served as pitching coach of the Orioles since June 26, 2004.

Orioles executive vice president Mike Flanagan declined comment, and Baltimore manager Sam Perlozzo, a longtime friend of Mazzone, did not return a phone call from The Associated Press.

Mazzone, 57, and Perlozzo grew up together in Cumberland, Md. The competed on different teams in American Legion ball, then became best friends. Perlozzo was the best man at Mazzone's wedding.

Earlier Wednesday, the Yankees ended talks with Mazzone after their three-day window to negotiate with him expired.

"Both sides agreed to end their discussions without resolution," Yankees spokesman Jason Zillo said.

Mazzone is credited with helping develop Greg Maddux, John Smoltz and Tom Glavine. From 1992 through this season, the Braves ranked first or second in the NL in ERA in every year but two.

Perlozzo was pleased with Miller's performance as pitching coach, but has said he wanted to work with Mazzone. Miller, who had surgery last week to repair an aortic aneurysm, gave Perlozzo permission to talk to another pitching coach before his surgery.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO LEOOOOOOOOOOOOO NEW YORK WANTED YOU!!!!!!!!! WHAT ARE YOU THINKING going to Baltimore? They have the worst pitchers in history of pitching. He should have stayed put in ATL. ATL has a good farm system and Leo could have gotten some good guys into the MLB. But he chose the sucky job in Baltimore. He will regret going to Baltimore, instead of staying in ATL, or giong go the YANKEES.

I don't know...Baltimore could feasibly have a pretty good starting rotation next year. Erik Bedard and Daniel Cabrera are two very good young pitchers, and Rodrigo Lopez has shown potential to be a more consistent performer (and we know what Leo has done with guys like that in the past). Plus, the O's will undoubtedly be trying to spend some money on free agent pitchers so if they could land AJ Burnett and Jarrod Washburn they all of a sudden have a very respectable starting 5 with the best pitching coach in the business.

Mazzone now gets to coach with his very best friend, so it's hard to fault him for the decision.

Yuck the Fankees. Mazzone's a good fit for Baltimore...I'd MUCH rather have him competing against New York than for them.

I'll be sitting in a running car in the garage. Pay no attention to the garden hose running from the exhaust into the driver's side window.

Now dont go and do anything drastic WD. Lets just wait and see who we bring in and how things are going to look next year. The Braves had a VERY young team this year and still managed to win the division. Of course....they did manage to top themselvese at breakin our heart in the playoffs by not only going out in the first round(AGAIN), but they did it in the longest postseason game in the history of the sport. I still think they will be improved next year and make it to the Division Series and maybe even the World Series.

I will miss seeing Leo Mazzone rocking in the Braves dugout. I would always say...."If Leo is a'rockin', don't come a'knockin'! lol
