Neo,

Since you are from Monroe, I thought I would ask you this. If anyone else has an answer, please share.

Do you ever hear any local news on Albert Ashcraft? He is a big guy and very fast. I know his running style isn't the best for RB, but how about other positions. I'm sure the coaching staff has already asked themselves the same question.

He's very young, so is this a case where we are just waiting on the light to come on? How are his work ethics? I never hear anything from coach about him and I never see him in action.

Just wondering!

Good question, I haven't heard a thing about Ashcraft since spring, I'd just assumed he got redshirted or hurt or both. Cuz when I was hearin' about him, it was nothing but good things.

He came to USC as part of a "package deal". He isn't seeing playing time because he is at best 4th on the depth chart.

I think a position change is in order for him. He is tall and and fast, could possibly play wide reciever. If he can catch the ball.

What type of package deal?

Yes, I saw him in the spring. He looked very good at times, especially around the corners. He does have problems between the tackles. He was also inconsistent. I believe Spurrier has mentioned his inconsistency before. Probably why he doesn't see the field.

He's still very young! If he isn't going to see the field at RB, maybe we will see him somewhere else. I'm sure we can use the speed somewhere.

Yeah...I can see Spurriers' point...why mess up the consistency we've shown in the running game up to this point? We could risk hurting our rushing stats if we do that.

Playing five wides, you can never have enough wide recievers. He is not big enough for linebacker. Safety, maybe.

According to what I've been told, Hall and Ashcraft were NOT a package deal. They didn't even know each other prior to coming to USC. Hall played in Wingate, NC which is roughly 13 miles from the city of Monroe. Ashcraft played for the Redhawks at Monroe HS.

As for Ashcraft, he's a good runner overall. He just has a few things to work on. He's fast and he's a bruiser, but he doesn't have the vision or the ability to hit the hole between the tackles. He does work his a$$ off so his eithics are not in question.

He's (Ashcraft) got lots of heart, just not enough athletic ability to be a starting TB in the SEC. Personally, I would leave him right where he is at TB. He's a good "Come off the bench when we need you" type of TB and barring injuries, he's pretty solid.

Look at it from Spurrier's point of view. He's playing a lot of his recruits to get them that much needed experience and he's only playing Holtz's recruits because at this time, he has no other viable option.

To sum it up, Ashcraft is a solid football player, but not a blue-chip/top-tier quality player. We're lucky to have him.
