Brad Lester may be ready to replace Kenny Irons as Auburn's starting tailback.

Lester, who has run with the first-team offense in both practices this week, said running backs coach Eddie Gran wants to "give me a shot for the No. 1 spot."

Lester was named the SEC freshman of the week in two of the last three games. He has rushed for 242 yards and five touchdowns on 36 carries. He's averaging 6.7 yards per carry. He has also shown his speed with three long kickoff returns. He's averaging an astounding 60.3 yards per return.

Lester has made a fast climb up the depth chart, especially considering he didn't have a carry in the season-opener as he worked to overcome a hamstring injury.

"I really didn't expect this," Lester said. "My dad was just talking to me and telling me to be patient about it. He was telling me about Gerald Riggs at Tennessee and how he started at fourth, fifth-team last season and ended up being the No. 1 back. I just thought about his situation and kept working hard. My time finally came."

The Auburn running game has really improved with the emergence of Lester & Irons.

I have stated several times that I like Lester a lot and that he would be our number one back at some point in time but I did not think that they would want him to start this weekend. I hope that does not start anything between him and Irons though. Just think we got things going in our favor then we start to fall apart because of this happening.

No worries about that:

Lester said he and Irons would remain fast friends no matter who starts.

"Kenny and I were just talking about what we're doing this weekend when we go home," Lester said. "Nothing has changed. Kenny and I still real good friends and hang out all the time. He's going to be riding home with me this weekend and we're going to be hanging out."

After the success of Carnell and Ronnie, I don't think it will be an issue. No doubt Auburn is the place to go for running backs. If you can make plays, Borges will get the ball in your hands.

I like the tradition of running backs and looks like we will be having that for years to come. So what do you think who is the better of the two? I got to go with Lester right now like I have always been doing. Not that Irons is not good just that Lester looks better.

Irons is bigger and has the edge in playing time. He seems to have a real mad-on this year and is going all out.

Lester is more elusive and seems to have better vision. He's small but he hits the holes like lightning. I really like his decisiveness at the line of scrimmage.

What I hate about Tre Smith is the fact that he jukes around at the line too much and can’t decide which way to go. He's pretty good once he gets a head of steam going. He's had a few good runs since the opener but overall I'm not impressed with Smith. I'd put him at the bottom of the chart behind Carl Stewart. Not having the running game together is what killed em in the opener.

I think once Brad Lester packs on some more muscle, he'll be really tough to handle. Kind of reminds me of Emmit Smith back in the day.

We knew he had the potential to do it. It could really be a good thing if we can use them both w/o ego's getting bruised. Cue the Carolina response.

Wow! I didn't notice how old this thread was. Well my input here is timeless. I hope Lester really pushes Kenny. It can only mean good things for our offense!
