Pot meet kettle. Orus, shut your pie-hole and go out there and play ball. At this point a USC player calling another team "not good" is laughable at best... Hopefully Coach Spurrier will deal with this accordingly...

What in the hell are yall talking about? It was Heffner's first game for crying out loud. Don't get me wrong, I was just as mad, but we all need to think with our mind and not our emotions.

We need to remember that he only has 1 start under his belt and he's a freshman.

And that 1 start was against Auburn, at their home. That is NOT the easiest environment to enter for your first start as a freshman. Give him a chance guys. If Heffner plays this weekend, it will be a much better environment for him to get some game experience. Auburn has a good defense, and is a very loud environment. I wouldn't judge him off that one game...

If Heffner plays the way he did last saturday, I would venture to say that he just might be in a tougher environment for the UK game...

To me there is no emotion involved, just simple math: Heffner as QB=we suck Mitchell as QB=we suck alot less

I think Syvelle started his first game against a good Troy team a year ago and looked good. Heffner may be a freshman but this is his second year of football at Carolina. It was only Syvelle's second year. l think Heffner was bad and I don't care where his first game was played. If he had been at home he would have had a much rougher time. I think most of the fans were Auburn fans so he didn't have to worry about getting booed.

Sounded like Spurrier said Syvelle will back up Mitchell. So, I don't think we're the only ones with the opinion that Hef can't get it done, even at home, even v. Kentucky. However, I'd be willing to give Hef another shot...if we get a substantial lead over Kentucky or for maybe one series if Mitchell has to come out. But no way would I let Hef tough it out a whole game like we did at Auburn.

You should have seen Phil Petty's first start if you want to see ugly. He was barely decent until his junior season---but we all know what happened there.

And the lesson here is (ancient Chinese proverb):

Just once in a lifetime is allowed the thrill

of a superfrosh like Steve Tanneyhill. :(

Actually Phil got significant playing time in 1998 and was pretty decent (his 98' stats are way good for a backup to Anthony wright, and his 1998 stats are way better than his 99' stats). I'm assuming that your under the impression that 1999 was his first year, that year everyone sucked and our offensive philosphy was a joke, so yeah he looked bad then...., also where did you guys see that syvelle was the backup? That's very interesting....

It was in today's State Newspaper. Syvelle took some QB snaps a Wednesday's practice and Spurrier said he wanted to have Syvelle available if Mitchell goes down. He also mentioned having Hefner available, but I noted an emphasis on Syvelle.

does that mean he will not be playing wide out, I should think not??

Spurrier asks Newton to dust off his QB skills

By JOSEPH PERSON

A familiar figure was back under center for USC on Wednesday.

With starter Blake Mitchell questionable for Saturday’s game against Kentucky with a sprained left ankle, Syvelle Newton saw increased time at quarterback, the position where he started five games in 2004.

Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier thinks Mitchell will be able to start, but he wants to have Newton and Antonio Heffner ready if Mitchell cannot play.

“If (Mitchell) gets hit, rolled around the ankle, he’ll come limping off,” Spurrier said. “We’ll put either Antonio or Syvelle (in). That’s our two choices right now.”

Newton, a junior from Marlboro County, played all 11 games at quarterback last season, completing 53 percent of his passes for 1,093 yards with six touchdowns and six interceptions.

Newton moved to receiver in the spring, but he took one snap at quarterback last week when Heffner played all but the final series in a 48-7 loss at Auburn.

Newton played down his quarterback role, saying he remains the emergency option.

“I just got a couple of (snaps); Blake got the majority of them,” he said.

Mitchell practiced for the second day in a row Wednesday, but his mobility remained limited.

“He’s still gimpy. But he’s not much of a runner, anyway,” Spurrier said. “So hopefully he won’t have to move around too much. Get rid of it quickly.”

Mitchell has a high ankle sprain, which can linger if a player returns too quickly. Linebacker Ricardo Hurley had a high sprain that bothered him the entire 2003 season.

Asked if he would rather sit out and come back for the Oct. 22 game against Vanderbilt, Mitchell said: “I don’t want to. But if it came down to it, maybe.”

Hit the weights. By the sound of it, Spurrier would like to see quarterback Cade Thompson spend a lot of his freshman year in the cafeteria and the weight room. Barring a long-term injury to Mitchell, Spurrier plans to redshirt the 6-foot-2, 170-pound native of Maryville, Tenn.

“He needs to get physically a little bigger and stronger,” Spurrier said. “I’m afraid if he gets hit real hard we may be carrying him off the field.”

Thompson, who threw for 2,300 yards and 35 touchdowns as a high school senior, is built much like the 6-3 Mitchell, who has added about 15 pounds since he arrived at USC at 180 pounds in 2003.

“If Blake were completely out for three or four weeks, I think we’d play Cade and see what he can do,” Spurrier said. “I really believe in his third, fourth, fifth year, he can really be an outstanding player here.”

More quarterback talk. Kentucky third-string quarterback Joe Joe Brown will play receiver against USC after seeing action at the position in a JV game against Hargrave Military this past weekend.

Brown, of Cordele, Ga., verbally committed to USC in 2003. But he later signed with the Wildcats when former Gamecocks coach Lou Holtz’s staff told Brown they had rated Heffner higher.

Extra points. Left guard William Brown is doubtful with a bulging disc in his lower back. Freddy Saint-Preux would start in place of Brown, who was injured during pregame warm-ups at Auburn. ... Sidney Rice will try to become USC’s first freshman receiver to catch touchdown passes in five consecutive games since Jermale Kelly pulled it off in 1997.

I think Newton will still play WR until he's needed as QB. We've got other players playing Offense and Defense, so it wouldn't be a big deal playing Syvelle at WR early in the game.

Who on this board could play any better than Antonio? I am like Neo. I was angry too, however that is a helluva place to have to start your first game. I think he will be fine in time. Just has to get his feet under him a bit.

I agree with you GT, give the kid a chance, he can't do anything but get better. AU is a tough place
