from today's Birmingham News:
Tommy Tuberville say he's expecting some tricky plays and some confusing offensive sets from South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier in Saturday's game at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
"I have a feeling the New Ball Coach is coming to come to town and try to confuse us. We've got to play smart on defense," Tuberville said.
Tuberville said the Tigers have prepared for reverses, flea-flickers, and Spurrier's favorite trick play, the Emory and Henry.
That's where only three offensive lineman are near the ball before the organized confusion begins.
Spurrier might be tempted to try something. His no. 1 quarterback Blake Mitchell isn't expected to play because of an injured ankle. His backup, Antonio Heffner, is more of a runner than passer.
"I read where he's bringing four quarterbacks - and he's been known to change a quarterback in a game," Tuberville said.
South Carolina will not only have a new offensive look with Heffner, but also a more tradional defense. The Gamecocks went 1-2 before switching to a more traditional defense for last week's victory over Troy.
"We'll have to watch a little extra film on them to see what they'll bring," said quarterback Brandon Cox.
Cox said the Gamecocks played more run defense against Troy than in the first three games.
"I'm sure that's what they're going to do against us," Cox said. "Stop the run and make us pass it. I'm looking forward to it."
Tuberville said the Tigers haven't captured the magic of last season's team.
"We don't have the chemistry we had last year," he said. "We have guys trying to feel their way around. Hopefully, we can get a lot more confidence in the next few weeks."
