View Full Version : What chance do we have vs. Auburn?

What chance do we have to win at Auburn without our starting QB?
I say very slim. We can't stop the run. We can't run. There defense is one of the best around. It's at the Burn. We don't have our starting QB. I think this has a very big chance of being very ugly. I hope I'm wrong, but ouch.

Can you that pixel right there? ----> <----
Yeah. That one.
Okay...cut into fifteen equal sized pieces.
Next throw away all but one of the pieces.
Take your single left over piece and hop on a plane over Lake Murray.
Drop your 1/15th of a pixel into the waters of Lake Murray from 10,000 feet.
Land your plane at Irmo International airport.
At exactly 2:45pm, chug-a-lug 3 liters of Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill wine.
Your chances of winning are roughly equivalent to your chances of being able to drag your drunken arse to Lake Murray and recover the 1/15th piece of pixel before sundown.
Not impossible, but I would save my lunch money if you plan to bet on the Gamecocks.

OH well, We will take the lumps for a year or 3, BUT SOS is in it for the LONG HAUL. The talent level [non thug and drug users]left by Holtz at USC is showing.
SOS doesn't pretend. He like me, is a REALISTS...

I have been quoted on here stating my distaste for Antonio Heffner and his lackluster passing/decision abilities. However, I do see what Spurrier is saying about the usefulness in this game of his undeniable ability....running. With the lack of effort/ability of our offensive line to stop opposing defenses from planting our QB's, the elusiveness of AH might be just the right thing for USC in this game. That plus the fact that Spurrier has used Heffner in a very limited offense up to this point and that gives little for opponents to study on him and his ability to make plays (hopefully make plays). This allows Spurrier to open up Heffner's play book and add another demension many people aren't used to seeing in a Spurrier offense...a running/passing QB. Hopefully his ability to be evasive will make up for the lines lack of pass blocking ability and will give our QB more time to make a better decision.
While I would rather have Blake in there at QB, Heffner might give SC an edge that would have been exploited had Mitchell been in a QB...who knows if BM could have played in the Auburn game he could have been out for longer than a few weeks. I mean seriously we gave up like 6 sacks to Troy...imagine what aurburn would have done to Blake. At least with a tough QB with running ability we will have a better chance at making plays and making up for the lines possible bad play. And you never know AH might step up and be the vocal leader that the team needs if he has a few good plays and gets some confidence.
While the game does look grim at first, we have made steps in the right direction in running and stopping the run; and those steps might be enough to give them the confidence they need to compete this week at Auburn. We can only hope....

I'm making this prediction based on absolutely no concrete evidence, only our past. For some unknown reason, we seem to show up for games in which the opposition is heavily favored. Case in point: Sept. 10th. Now, whether it's the fact that the other team just slacks off is up for discussion, but for some reason these games end up closer than expected. Am I placing any wagers on this game? HELL NO. Statistically speaking, should we get entirely dominated? HELL YES. But some mysterious force from the depths of my loins came up with this prediction: AU: 21, SC: 19.
Ko better make some GD picks though, or my loins are going to be pissed. I also believe that Succop's going to have a day of retribution, hitting multiple 40+ yarders.

We can't run the ball. The problems we have running the ball will be the same problems that stop Hefner. I hope you are right in all your points but I fail to see how Hefner is going to open up holes when Defenses are continually plowing through to plug em up. This game may just get ugly quick. Who knows, we played good in Georgia, we may play a good game down in Auburn. Everything looks as if they will blow us away but hopefully we can keep it respectable.

For most of the pre and early season, most of us thought that we would upset one of the big guys. While we do not have a lot of evidence to encourage us, this could be our chance. Seeing the way Tenn. came back on LSU and knowing the talent at UF, a victory on the plains of East Alabama might be our only chance of getting that big game. If Auburn is the team of 2004, there is no way, but they may be more like the team of 2003. When they think they have it wrapped up, they go out and lose to Georgia Tech and eventually people begin to get fired from their jobs because they push the panic button and start doing weird stuff like flying off into the night to meet with prospective coaches to replace Turbeville. Well, they thought they had a better team this year that there 13-0 squad from last year and promptly lost to Tech. If they think the Gamecocks are a pushover, we might (just might) walk out of the loveliest village with a W. Anyway, I will at least sit by my TV for 3 quarters even if they score at half time is 21-0.

I think that USC does have a chance to keep this game respectable. That would be Antonio Heffner. Like an earlier poster said, he brings a new dimension to the offense. I don't know what AH everyone else was watching, but so far I've seen him make a lot of people miss their assignments/tackles.
I think Auburn will probably win this game, but USC has a chance. It all depends on who shows up. In games where the opposition is highly favored, USC shows up and plays with a fury. In order for USC to win, they're gonna have to strike quick and flawlessly.

Hey, I couldn't help the obvious remark..lol. I used to always pull for SC except when they played UT, of course. But my extreme dislike of Spurrier (always fun to watch for the flying visor though) changed that this year. I don't think it will be a blowout but I don't think it will be close either. Best of luck though because I never really cared for Auburn either. Especially after last year....*shudders at the memory*

Auburn has had problems containing mobile quarterbacks this year. The QB from WK ran for 50yds on the first play of the game last week. I'm sure it's something they have worked hard to correct in practice but who knows the QB change could turn out to be a good thing in this game.

I'm afraid the Gamecocks are in trouble on this one. However this Guy Spurrier is GREAT!! I've wondered whether he may be bluffing to confuse Auburn and may have Mitchell ready (wishful thinking). I've noticed the line has gone from Auburn by 12 to 13 to 14 and maybe more by game time. That's not a good sign. The chances that Heffner will come through and really be a pleasant surprise are pretty slim.

Actually, if he did do that there would be major ramifications. It's one thing for a player to play through pain and quite another for a coach to lie about whether he will appear in the game.
Heffner can't play, the "athletic", "running" QB thing doesn't work, they just can't throw the ball accurately and can't think or make good decisions. Auburn, led by a pissed off Kenny Irons, runs all over the gamecocks, 35 to 16......

Yeah, but we couldn't offer everyone. We missed out on him just like everyone else in the nation missed out on Ko Simpson. Some sneak by.
On Irons, I never was impressed with him. He might be working harder now that he is at SC but I think his ego and Summer's ego lead to an unavoidable fallout. These athletes need to remember that just because they were good in high school doesn't mean they are going to be good in college.

Carolina will have to do the two things they haven't been able to all year. Run and stop the run. Watching the Auburn-GT game, GT poined out a few weaknesses on the Auburn team. They are beatable, but we will have to force them to throw and hope for some turnovers. Auburn 28 Carolina 14.

I hope you are right and I will pulling for Hefner and USC of course. Until we establish a running game, I don't see us running for very much. Maybe AH can open something up but I'm not sure. The new dimension might just be what this offense needs to kick start it. The OLine is still the key to a running game and we haven't shown that we can block good enough to have a successful running game. :)

Let's face it, every year, there has to be a lower quadrant, consisting of the bottom four in the conference. We, like all others here, always hope it won't be us (a certain choice few of the other teams wish for other things). While I am in hopes that we will somehow crawl our way to the middle of the pack (sigh), at least we're (almost assuredly  ), the best of the worst.

While it is true that GT came out with an outstanding game plan and exposed some soft coverages against a somewhat green secondary, AU's defense adjusted and pretty much shut them down after the first quarter. AU's inablility to pick up the blitz and Cox trying to force some throws is what ultimately led to thier demise in that game. They also had the wrong TB running the ball that game.
I've watched every game this season and the one glarring weakness on Auburn's defense this year has been thier lack of containment against mobile QB's. Every team they've faced this year has had a QB that could run.
Heffner can run and escape preasure so I'm sure he will make some big plays in this game. He might do just enough to keep it respectable but I seriously doubt the game will still be in question late in the forth quarter.

Syvelle's been taking snaps this week. If things get ugly don't be surprised if he comes in to run the show. Imo Hefner and Syvelle have about the same pass accuracy and arm strength. But Syvelle does have the experience behind center, it's the fact that he's a better threat at receiver that keeps him out of there.

All this talk about running and stopping the run....I wouldn't mind seeing us go to an all-out passing attack and let Heff run if he needs to. Give our RBs maybe 15 carries the entire game (Turman for those short-yardage plays, etc) and just whip the ball around the rest of the time. Roll AH out & let him take off if he has a lot of green in front of him, tell him to throw if there isn't. Hit Bobby Wallace & Mike Davis in the flat to replace whatever we should have for a running game...that'd keep them from blitzing every other play and keep their safeties honest.
I've given up on predicting scores since I can't get anyone to email me each teams' gameplans but if we throw four times as much as we run on offense, I think we'll pull off the upset. If we try to manage the clock and set up the play-action passing game, we're in for a looonnnnggg game.
If we're gonna suck, we may as well get some in-game throwing experience for our redshirt freshman QB, some real game pass-blocking practice for our offensive line (which would be easier w/ a mobile QB) and put the pressure on THEIR defense instead of just on ours for once. The question that keeps coming to me is WHY THE ~bleep!!~ NOT? :D

I'd say that's about right. If things go as they should. However, we all know that this is college football with 18 and 19 year olds playing. Things go wrong, momentum changes, the crowd gets quiet and suddenly an upset is looming.
Nawwwwwwwwww ..... never happen in a million years.

Umm, its still Auburn and its still SC.....same thing as always. Auburn is gonna have a fried chicken dinner on the plains!
yeah, if you go all the way back to the 1930's and count those 4 games, USC is 1-4-1 alltime against AUB........
I see where the two teams have played enough, especially recently (last game between the two was 8 years ago) to say, "same thing as always"..... :o

Auburn's going to beat the crap outta us. Plain & simple.
38-17
'Cocks get a meaningless late TD like they did vs Bama & the moral victory crowd will point to that.
We only have 2 chances. Slim & none.

Galactus, is that you ;)
btw, I agree, it will be like Alabama game except USC fans won't leave until 4th Quarter.

If we can run with them for four quarters and keep the score within 10 points or so I'll be happy. One question I have is if we're going to run the QB draw offense, why not let Syvelle play QB? He's much more elusive than Heffner and his arm is comparable. I guess SOS knows best....
