It seems as if the nose-wheels are turned sideways. There are 137 people on board. This is happening now and live coverage can be found on CNN/FoxNews.

wonder what the odds are of those front landing gear wheels turning back straight when they hit the runway?

Slim to none.

The only way that might possibly happen would be to add full left or right rudder just before it touched the ground. But that's risky because the plane will veer strongly towards the direction of rudder.

The smartest thing do to, in my pilot opinion, is just to land and let the gear collapse. It'll look pretty bad, but it's fairly safe (for an emergency landing).

That was damn impressive. That pilot is getting a bonus this year, I bet. :D Good job!

just saw the replay. surprised those tires smoked as long as they did before they started flaming. That pilot did an excellent job not to loose the whole assembly

Yeah, you guys thought it was great, but my wife was having to plow through the traffic. The local news radio was doing a "play-by-play" and every morbid freak in LA County headed to LAX to watch them crash.

She was an hour late from work.

Let me give you a different perspective of the situation....I was in Washington, DC on business Tuesday and Wednesday. I was flying back last night (Wednesday) from Washington, DC, and had about a 1 and 3/4 hour layover in Atlanta before making my 9:52 PM connection (to fly home to Dothan). Thought I'd get a bite to eat and a drink in Chile's at the Atlanta airport since I hadn't had anything to eat since lunch. They were showing the coverage on CNN, and everyone was saying: "Wow. What a thing to show in the airport while everyone is waiting to catch a plane." Actually it didn't really bother me seeing this before boarding the plane, but it definitely bothered several people in the airport. I said a quick prayer for the pilots and passengers, and actually saw it land safely right before boarding my plane for the flight home to Dothan.

And as several of you have already said, props to the pilot(s) for making the successful landing.

That was a great landing. I held my breath the entire time from when it touched down until it stopped. It never even went off the center line!! Kudos to the pilot!

Wow. Those guys had some luck on their side. I didn't think the plane would land that perfectly.
