Ryan Brewer is now a local talk show host here in Columbia on "The Cheap Seats". As a recent grad he had a particulary telling comment on today's show about the upperclassmen on USC's team. He said and I'm paraphrasing here:
“These are the kids that we were practically begging to come to the weight room when they were freshmen.”
I think this says alot about the character of some of these players. Lou just didn't take character into consideration when he recruited some of these guys.

To be honest, I don't care if we play less talented players. Effort is all I'm looking for. When I watched a replay of the Bama, I saw some of our upperclassmen on the bench cutting up and joking around while we were getting beat by 20+ points. Inexcusable IMHO....

I still think this would be our best option.....

I have been preaching that all week brotha!! :D You know I am with you on that. Sit em all. I could care less. They should also keep in mind that if these freshmen play well this week, this may not be a one week deal.

I don't think Spurrier would waste a red shirt year and have him come in for mop up duty or just to play on special teams. If he is good enough to help the team, then he will be there playing. The upperclassmen better get ready for a reality check.

You watched the replay? You must have been the kid that enjoyed it when the teacher ran her fingernails across the chalkboard! :)

We've done this crap for several years now. One need only to look at the body language of the bench to see how the 'cocks were going to perform. No kidding, last year I watched games on TV and would say "here we go again". Lots of these guys truely act like they don't care, and they are certainly not in their game mode. We'll continue to be an almost was with those type attitudes

I agree 100%. My opinion is if we are going to play with less than a full deck then why not invest in our future and let the newbies play. Those upperclassmen that aren't taking it seriously should be written off and made examples of. Talent only gives you potential but attitude dictates your fate.

These type attitudes and work ethics are what I've always expected Coach Spurrier to purge the moment he took over. My love of my team made me just assume that he could just snap his fingers and have the slackers of our team turn into workaholics in the weight room & on the field.
We all knew the turn-around was going to take time; I think we gave a lot of our players too much credit in seizing the opportunity that is (was?) before them. A lot of them obviously didn't which is why we looked like a Pop Warner team out there against the Tide.
The word of the week is: PURGE
The word of the season is: EFFORT
Let's hope the coaching staff can get those words and their meanings across to whomever is given the opportunity to show they want to be a part of this team. If they can't read either word, throw them in the word of the week category. Enough is enough.

You are 100% correct. It's unfortunate these dinosaurs from the Holtz era haven't gotten the picture; we could have used their experience. Their attitudes need shelving (benching). The players who play with determination as freshmen will be the ones who play GREAT as upperclassmen.
THE FUTURE IS NOW!

I agree with all the sentiments and feelings here, though in respect to the PR-24 Neo posted, I would prefer a 12ga 3" magnum shell of rock salt to each testicle of uninspired players :D
And on, but off-topic, which PPV will the game be on for DirecTV?
I'm glad to see a thread with just Gamecock fans, and our opinion to what is wrong not with this season, but rather with our football culture. I tell you what, I guarantee you that if the 10 to 15 of us who have posted on this thread were on the team there would not be a problem with effort. My ass would be in the weight room everyday and on the field every day giving my best. It was always a life dream for me to wear the garnet when I was growing up and if I had that opportunity I would give it my best and I would not lay down to any opponent, I have too much pride in myself, my work ethic, my team, and the fans, I don't understand how we can all get it, but these other guys can't, I wish we had a team of Ryan Brewers and Steve Taneyhills, they always gave 100%, always, no matter the situation, they left everything on the field.....

Some people have pride in THEMSELVES. These are the types of players you want on your team. I understand the mentality of hopelessness: we can't possibly win this game, comeback, we're too far down, etc. But an individual should play not only for the team; when the team is falling apart, there is a breed that will play on. I remember, a few years back, when teams played UNC, it was with a smirk, because they did not fear a team so pathetic. However, there was a particular linebacker on that team that ALL offenses feared. He was simply known as "LT". He was great, not only for his talent, but for his determination. He played hard on every play. To put it succinctly, no matter what your talent level, if you have a team full of individuals who will play their best on every play, you will have a winner in all respects.
Yes, and I agree to an extent, but teams win titles and championships, not individuals, football is the greatest example of a team sport on the planet. Some ppl play hard no matter what, and have pride in themselves, and are motivated by money, etc., but at some point, you've got to work with the other parts of the machine, a fantastic steering wheel that never jams doesn't make a car drive (not a great metaphor but does the job). I think we're all on the same page here though....

If you reread what I said, I meant that when all others quit, a winner keeps playing, regardless (like Tanneyhill, who "singlehandedly" won games, Ryan Brewer, etc.).
Gotcha, it's sometimes hard on these message boards to get full understanding when you can't hear the person saying it, reading stuff leaves open so many interpretations, and yeah, Taneyhill was the ultimate winner for us...

Some people seem to think freshmen are going to get us clobbered some more. I strongly disagree. This does two things. Gives them game experience (they will show effort), and put these jarheads on notice that just because you have jr. or sr. behind your name doesn't mean you have the "right" to play. Way to go SOS.
